KOR vs GER Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
Korea Republic
2 - 0
Kim Young-Gwon 90'+2'
Son Heung-Min 90'+6'
Wow, what a result! Germans didn't really deserve anything from that group. Even the three points against Sweden was a last gasp strike. Boy, this result will reverberate around the world. WHAT A RESULT! The defending Champions are out!

South Korea deserved the win. They should have won by a bigger margin in fairness, but jeez, what result!

Sweden finish as group leaders and Mexico finish second!

France in 2002, Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and Germany in 2018! Seems like the Champions do feel a lot of heat!

This is Amit Mishra signing off, see you when I see you!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! FULL TIME! GERMANY ARE OUT!
90+9' HUMMELS WITH A CHANCE! He misses! We've played nine minutes of injury time because of VAR!
Ju turns Neuer in midfield and takes a shot trying to score. The long ball turns into a pass as Son breezes through to tap it in! Neuer was in midfield! AMAZING!
90+6' Neuer is playing in MIDFIELD! He doesn't care anymore! Not just a run or two! He's playing in midfield!
90+5' Hummels' looping header is over the bar! That was Germany's last chance! They need 2 goals in 2 minutes!
90+3' WOW! That was proper fracas in the box and Germany are heading home!
90+1' And still the VAR check for the goal. The last pass came off Kroos and it's got to be given as a goal! JG KIM SCORES!
90+1' GOAAAAAA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! South Korea thought they had scored but the linesman has his flag up! VAR to step in now!
Six minutes to be added on...
90' Corner to Germany! It was 2v2 again but the Hummels gives it away in their own half and the shot from Son is deflected for a corner off Sule!
89' South Korea had the chance to put the Germans out but just CAN"T find that final cross! AMAZING how the Germans are still in this game! In shambles at the back!
88' Kroos with a shot in the end but he just didn't catch it as Cho Hyun-Woo saves comfortably! Germany are running out of time!
87' HUMMELS! WHAT A MISS! Smashing cross by Ozil from the right but Hummels fails to read it as it comes off his shoulder! How did that not go in?
86' Not the best of corners as Hummels gets it away. Germany break forward again but Korea restructure well!
85' Ozil this time runs into a Cul de Sac and Korea break forward! Sule manages to get a foot in and it's out for a corner!
84' Brandt combines well with Muller on the right and the former's shot is well blocked in the South Korea box. It falls to Ozil at the edge and his square pass is hit by Kroos, but it's just over!
83' Reus with a shot from the edge of the box but it just didn't have the direction or the dip to trouble the South Korea custodian. Germany still lack the incision as Korea are still pretty conformable in their own half!
82' Kimmich tries to pick out Muller in the box from the right but the latter's flicked header finds no one and South Korea get a goalkick in the end...
81' Werner tries to make a darting run on the left but his touch is too heavy and the Germans again come away with nothing. South Korea hang on, and as things stand, Mexico hang on!
80' Terribly shoddy defending from Germany again as it was a 3v2 situation there but Ko's cross is dealt with by Hummels in the end...
79' Substitution for South Korea

Hwang is OFF
Ko is ON
78' SON! HALF A CHANCE! Again, cuts in from the right and lets loose at the near post, but it just isn't on target!
78' Substitution for Germany

Hector is OFF
Brandt is ON
77' Corner to Germany as Kimmich and Reus combine well on the right before the former's cross is deflected for a corner!
76' German try to tiki taka their way in the box but Muller's touch lets him and the whole move down as the Koreans get away with it. Korea are so well drilled to put in the front footed tackle and break as Hummels again misplaces a pass, but Kimmich comes back to make the interception!
75' The fellas at the office just appreciated a smashing through pass by Jang Hyun-Soo for Son, but Jeez Neuer! Comes out to get it away! Proper sweeper keeper, Manuel.
74' Corner to Germany as Muller tries to flick it in but misses it completely! Can they make something out of this?
73' Again Germany get it forward but Korea are so well drilled to get the men behind the ball. Throw in to Germany on the left as Hector's cross is blocked...
73' Judging by the way the Germans have defended so far, all it takes is one good pass by South Korea to break the shackles
72' Interception by Hong to deny Kimmich the chance to pick a pass by Kroos. Germany are pressing and are on the ball here...
71' Not a bad pass by Hong Chul but no one attacks it and Neuer comes out to collect it. Korea are suddenly very efficient with their passing!
70' Kroos tries a long range curler but it's way over. Still time for the Germans, but they need to show more sanity at the back as the threat is there from the Koreans...
69' Substitution for South Korea

Moon is OFF
Ju Se-Jong is ON
68' Ozil tries a beautiful reverse to find Gomez but it just doesn't reach him. Kimmich wins the second ball and puts a good cross for Gomez but his header is straight at Cho Hyun-Woo!
67' Germans need to sort their midfield as they are being overrun really bad by the Korean attack here...They break again!
66' Hong Chul does really well to get away from Werner and Kimmich and sets Korea on the break! Moon cuts in well but just doesn't take the shot as Hummels makes the tackle!
65' Son Heung-Min is booked for simulation! Tried to take on too many and when he saw the opening, just took a tumble!
64' Nervy defending from the Koreans as Kroos was found at the far post but just couldn't find the target! Very nervy, this game...
64' Corner to Germany as Werner tries to make something on the right but Hong Chul does well to get the block it!
63' Substitution for Germany

Goretzka is OFF
Muller is ON
63' Son shaped up well and cut in side to set it up for the curler, but the shot is way over! Germany to make another change...
61' Kroos with a shot! But it's deflected for a goalkick! Poor from the Germans as they seem too lethargic. Sweden make it two as I type that!
60' Ozil tries to do his thing with a nice little lifted pass to find an onrushing Hummels, but it's just too high and Korea manage a spell of reprieve...
59' Nice pass by Kim Young-Gwon to find Hwang but the forward just couldn't control it with Hummels breathing down his neck. Germany still look so labored while going forward. Just haven't created much...
58' Substitution for Germany

Gomez is ON
Khedira is OFF
57' Moon with a breezy run on the left but his square pass for Son is cut off well by Hummels as he sets Germany on the break...
56' Substitution for South Korea

Koo Ja-Cheol is OFF
Hwang Hee-Chan is ON
55' A temporary stoppage in play as Koo is down with a cramp. Germany are readying Muller on the sidelines...
55' So much space for the Koreans on the break! A lot of nervy defending as the Germans are barely clearing it away during the South Korean breaks...
54' Kimmich and Khedira both try their luck from the edge of the box but bot the shots are blocked by a barrage of South Korean defenders! Korea break...
53' Kimmich with a chance to cross from the right but Kim Young-Gwon intercepts his cross for a corner! Kroos' corner is well defended but South Korea give it away immediately and Germany keep the ball and attack...
52' SON! At the other end! Rounded the keeper but just couldn't get it back on target from a narrow angle! It's all happening suddenly!
51' OH WERNER! What a chance! Good cross by Hector to find Werner in the box, totally unmarked! Should've done better there! He just couldn't keep it down!
50' Sweden have taken the lead, fellas. So Germany are going out unless they score!
49' Long range tester by Kroos but it's way over! Suddenly a very open game this!
48' Booking for Moon Seon-Min! Well, the South Koreans countered immediately before Hummels' brilliant tackle stopped them. Moon was too eager and fouls Kroos in the process...
47' Brilliant save by Cho to deny Goretzka! That was a sweeping German move started by a Kroos pass and Kimmich's cross to find Goretzka was excellent! Top save by the South Korean keeper!
46' Early shot by Jung! Neuer collects safely this time. The Germans need that sense of urgency here as the group is still very open. All it takes is one Korean goal to shake things up!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Second half is underway! South Korea get us started, shooting from right to left!
The teams are out and the second half is moments away...
Been a very dull half. South Korea have been sturdy at the back, and Germany have been woeful everywhere. Second half in a few...
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Half time! Are you still awake, reader? If so, kudos!
45+3' Kimmich with a sad, sad cross this time. Really sad that. Or should I say bad? either way, it didn't work. As I say that, Son marauds forward and has a snaps at it. Way wide.
45+2' Brilliant block by Kim Young-Gwon to deny Ozil a shot on target. He cut back in and it looked like the shot was defo going to make the keeper work!
45+1' Kroos nearly misplaced a pass as Son was lurking to intercept a loose ball. Luckily, Khedira put the shift in to reach it before the Tottenham star.
Three minutes have been added on...
44' Good build up play by the Koreans as Son and Koo do well to keep the ball. Just when Son though he had the better of Khedira, the German holds him like he's a pillow and manages to get a goalkick. He can't afford to do that with the VAR around, you know
43' WERNER HITS THE POST! Wouldn't have counted had it gone in though as Hector is adjudged to have fouled Yun Young-Sun. Seemed a bit iffy that...
42' The Germans get the ball to Ozil and he finds Werner on the left. Again, Werner plays it back to the midfield as he sees a wave of red Korean shirts in front of him and just can't do anything else!
39' Good corner by the Germans! Hector leaped the highness to win the header but couldn't place his header on goal. Werner did well to win the loose ball and pick out Hummels. The defender showed excellent control in the box but his shot was scuffed and is collected by Cho Hyun-Woo!
38' Not a bad move by the Germans as Werner made a good run and was picked out excellently by Ozil. Werner in the end gets a deflection that nearly looped off his shin for a goal! Corner to the Germans!
37' Goretzka again tries to make a run on the right but Kroos this time overhits the pass and the Koreans get away with it...
36' The Germans are passing it around, hoping for a mistake that seems like it's never gonna come. A lot of ball retention without any drive whatsoever in the attacking third. If you're a German fan, you ought to be worried...
34' Khedira this time drifts wide to put a cross in. The number of times they've drifted wide just shows how solid the Koreans have been so far. The movement is lacking and there is no pace on the wide areas to stretch the Korean defence...
33' Reus makes a driving run through the middle but just doesn't catch it well. The shot ricochets off Kim Young-Gwon and strikes the BVB attacker on his arm as the ref blows his whistle. Another move that promised a bit but in the end peters out to nothing...
32' Looks like there will have to make a few changes for the Germans at half time if they are to trouble the South Koreans in the second half. Unless something drastic happens in the first half...
30' Goretzka has had a bit of a stinker so far. He tries to pick out Kimmich on the right but it's over hit. He's having to shuffle from right and then drift to the midfield, and the role just doesn't suit him!
29' Germany have a corner here as Yun Young-Sun received treatment for a head injury. Kroos finally resumes play with the delivery from the corner, but it's safely away by the South Korean defence...
28' Goretzka again with time and space to pick out a pass from the right but it evades every damn person in the box! Germany win the second ball but Werner's cross is too close to the keeper. Yun Young-Sun gets it away...
27' Freekick to Germany as the Germans take it short. Goretzka got it moving quickly but his cross wasn't the best and South Korea get it away...
26' Well, 68% possession for the Germans so far. Nothing to show for just yet as Kroos and Khedira pass it around the midfield area...
25' SON! BIG CHANCE! Lee Jae-Sung's cross was barely cleared by Sule and Son's follow up shot was just wide! He hit it well, but just couldn't direct ti on goal! Germany have got away with one!
Mexico and Sweden is still 0-0. A pretty end to end game that with a bucket load of chances. Do follow Anirudh Menon covering that game on Sportskeeda as well!
23' Yellow card shown to Lee Jae-Sung for a rash tackle on Goretzka. He was all over the former Schalke midfielder!
22' Hummels shows why he is regarded highly as a passmaster as he lifts it above the Korean midfielders to find Kimmich. The right back just delays his cross and his final delivery is calmly collected by the young Cho Hyun-Woo...
21' Germany get forward through Werner on the right but the South Korea do well to defend and force him backwards. The forwards then press Sule into passing it back to Neuer! Good stuff from the Asians...
20' Nothing much of the corner as Jang takes a shot from about 25 yards and smacks it into row-z. Germany build up again...
19' JEEZ! WHAT WAS NEUER DOING? Good hit by Jung Woo-Young, but the custodian usually gobbles these up! He redeems himself and punches the spill for a corner!
17' Play resumes and South Korea get a freekick for a high foot by Khedira. Good position as five Korean players are in a deep conference as to how they are going to take it. Expect a complicated routine...
16' Goretzka and Koo clash and the Korean has come off worse as he needs a bit of attention. Well, a pretty dull start so far as neither keeper has had much to do...
15' Nothing comes off the corner as Sule's looping header is collected safely by Cho Hyun-Woo. Germany press well and immediately win the loose ball. This is going to be an exercise in patience for Zee Germans...

14' Goretzka with a good chance to cross as he had Reus and Werner in the box. It was a 3v2 situation but Goretzka's cross is cleared for a corner by Kim Young-Gwon in the end! Not quite the efficiency you'd associate the Germans with...

13' Not the best of games as Germany look very leggy in their build up play. The Koreans are just too eager while attacking and have lost the ball too early.
12' Pretty well defended by the Koreans and Kim Young-Gwon in particular who was dealing with Sule in the box. Germany win the second ball immediately and are probing again...

11' Freekick to Germany on the right in what is a pretty good position. Kroos on the ball...
10' No real movement from the German attackers yet as Kroos tries to make inroads down the middle. He looks up but neither Werner nor Reus had made a run and in the end, puts a cross that is easily defended by the Korean defence.
9' Jung Woo-Young is booked for a rash tackle on Hector.

8' Koreans are trying to be very direct here as Hong, the leftback, tried to pick out Moon on the left. Sule was doing the tracking back there and his pace sort of stops Moon in his tracks...
7' Good movement by first Son and then Lee Jae-Sung as they try to catch the German defence off guard. Lee Jae-Sung did well to find a pocket of space on the right but Khedira got back in time to get the tackle in...
5' Good darting run by Werner. That's the first bit of drive we've seen by the Germans so far. Reus had made the run on the left, but Werner's pass was just a tad overhit. The Koreans get a goalkick...
4' I'll be keeping a close eye on Kimmich who has done a lot of attacking so far in the tournament. This time, he almost drifts to the centre of the pitch, trying to find Hector. A bit odd that. Good defensive structure by the Koreans though...
3' Freekick to Germany as Kroos is fouled by Lee Jae-Sung as he tried to get the ball moving from his own half. Plenty of possession for the Germans in their own half so far...
2' Lee Jae-Sung does well on the right to get away from Hector but his cross into the box is easily cleared away by Hummels. Germany are back in possession...
1' German pass it around in their own half before Korea win a freekick in their own half. Expect a lot of possession for the Germans today...
Peeeeeeeeeeeeep! Kickoff! Germany get us underway, shooting from right to left in their changed strip of green top and white shorts. Korea are in their red top and black shorts!
The teams are out and kickoff is moments away! Germany have made five changes, can the team perform cohesively? Lest we forget, every team still has a chance to get out of this group, so there's plenty to play for!

This is Amit Mishra, and I’ll be your host for the game! For feedbacks, you can reach me @DerStoic on Twitter or drop an email to Let’s hope for an open game, fellas!

South Korea vs Germany – Team News

The Germans have a couple of absentees to worry about. Jerome Boateng will be unavailable due to his red card against Sweden. Midfielder Sebastian Rudy also suffered a facial injury and Joachim Low won’t be able to call upon his services for the clash. In place of the Bayern man, we could see Ilkay Gundogan take his spot in midfield. The positive news is that Mats Hummels is fit.

Against a packed Swedish midfield and defence, Germany struggled in the absence of Hummels and his ability to pick out passes from his own half will be a massive boost for the Germans against the Koreans. Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil could remain on the bench and I suspect Julian Draxler could be dropped for Julian Brandt who has done very well in the few minutes of action Low has given him.

South Korea will be without their skipper Ki Sung-Yeung. That’s a pretty big bow as he oozes quality in that midfield and his passing on the counter-attacks could have really hurt the Germans.

South Korea vs Germany – Probable Lineups

South Korea probable XI: Cho, Lee, Jang, Kim, Kim, Ju, Ki, Moon, Lee, Hwang, Son

Germany probable XI: Neuer, Kimmich, Rudiger, Hummels, Hector, Kroos, Gundogan, Brandt, Reus, Muller, Werner

South Korea vs Germany - Tactical preview and key players

Unlike the Mexicans and Swedes, the German forwards won't have to deal with towering defenders this time around. The Germans will have a lot of possession like we saw against the Mexicans and the Swedish. The problem with the Koreans is they aren't as physically strong like the two teams Germany have already faced.

Joachim Low has been criticised for using Julian Draxler when the PSG man hasn't offered anything. Niether has he provided the burst of pace, something they needed against Sweden, not has he been assertive with his passing, something the Mexicans exploited in the first game.

Marco Reus has been the player who has carried the German attack so far in the World Cup. Not only can he finish, but he can pick a pass and link up the play really well, something we witnessed against Sweden.

If Korea can somehow stop Germany's wide players from getting to the byline and cutting it back in, they will be one step closer to stopping them. They still need to conjure something themselves and Heung-Min Son will be expected to carry that burden.

Out of nothing, the Tottenham star scored a wonder-goal against Mexico, so he has that threat to trouble the Germans. Hwang is the other forward who is pretty quick and if Son and Hwang combine well, Hummels, who is returning from an injury and isn't in the best of form, could be under a bit of pressure.
