Not the most convincing of starts to Pep Guardiola's new era but a win nonetheless for the Citizens. The Sky Blues took the lead in the 4th minute. Va Anholt conceded a penalty after a clumsy challenge on Sterling.
Aguero needed no invitation as he stepped up and slotted home. From then on Sunderland did not threaten much but City were a bit flat in attack. The team still felt like they were in transition trying to adapt to Pep's style of play.
Sagna and Clichy were almost playing like central midfielders at times to try and help the passing rhythm but they did look shaky at the back many times.
City paid for their defensive fragility as Rodwell played in Defoe in the 71st minute and the Englishman slotted the ball into the back of the net. Ice Cool finishing at it's best
But it was a former United player who gave City the win as Paddy McNair failed to keep his composure and put the ball into the back of his own net just 4 minutes after coming on for Defoe to give Pep a win on his Premier League debut!
Peeeep! PeeeeP! PeeeP! Guardiola starts with a win! Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland
94' 30 seconds to go! Sunderland have the ball!
94' Free-kick for SUnderland! One last chance maybe!
92' Caballero smothers a cross as just as two red shirts were converging towards the ball!
90' HOW DID CITY NOT SCORE! Iheanacho skies it from 5 yards out after a mistake from the defence put the Black Cats in a 3 vs 2 situation
90' Sunderland now on the front foot in desperate search for an equaliser
88' That goal might just have saved Pep's blushes on his first game in the league but they still have to see this out
87' It;s an own goal from Paddy McNair! Jesus Navas drills in a low cross from the right it deflects off a City player and McNair in his attempt tp clear heads the ball into his own net
87' CITY SCORE 2-1!!!!
84' City passing the ball to death but still no way through this Sunderland defence
82' Can Iheanacho or Aguero save this game for City? There are only 8 minutes to go in this game
81' So Iheanacho is coming on and Deja Vu of Pellegrini's last season in charge etched on those City fans' faces
80' De Bruyne's shot finds the mars rover from the edge of the box!
77' Defoe is now tied with Van Persie as the 10th most all tie scorer in the Premier League
75' That was a £47.5 million nutmeg from Januzaj, to assist Defoe's goal!
74' Sunderland could actually win this now!
73' A rude awakening for Guardiola!
72' Well Well Well! The City defence is breached. All it took was one moment of quality! Januzaj slipped in a wonderful through ball for Defoe through the centre and Defoe did what he does best, finish with aplomb!
71' DEFOE SCORES!!! ITS 1-1!!!
70 After Navas has come on he has added some quality to this attack! Corner for City
68' SAVE FROM MANNONE! De Bruyne tries to catch him off guard at the near post but the Italian is having none of that
67' He wins a free-kick which De Bruyne will take
66' Sterling surprisingly has been City's best player so far! The Englishman has shown strength speed and acceleration in this game
64' Silva comes off for Delph
63' Sunderland to bring in some Manchester blood onto the pitch. Adnan Januzaj will be coming on shortly along with Wahbi Khazri. City are going to throw on Fabian Delph
60' AGUERO HITS THE POST! Sterling with a burst of pace beats the left back drives into the box and puts in a low cross. the clearance from Van Anholt falls to Aguero and his snap shot hits the frame of the goal!
59' Guardiola is still as animated as ever on the touchline. It almost feels like he wants to get on the pitch and play
57' It almost seems like the players are struggling to execute Pep's ideology on the pitch. The Sharp passing and movement, possession football needs more work
55' City don't seem to be in smooth control at the moment. The passing has become a bit wayward. Guardiola might be thinking about his bench
54' Again close but not enough! De Bruyne cuts back the ball and there is no one there to take a shot!
51' Right now it looks like this City side are showing some glimpses of the Pellegrini style and some glimpses of Guardiola's style!
48' CLOSE FOR CITY! Nolito and De Bryne interchange wonderfully giving the latter the opportunity to cross but Kaboul is on hand to slide and block Aguero's effort
47' Surprisingly there are empty seats in the stadium! You would expect a full house when one of the biggest managers is in charge of his first game
The second half is under way
It still doesn;t look like a Guardiola side per say but that will take some time. Stones has been decent so far but it is definitely not a settled back four
So City have been pretty stale after that Sergio Aguero goal. They have up the ante in the second half, because they have looked vulnerable at the back.
Half Time: Manchester City 1-0 Sunderland
46' Don't remember Aguero touching ball since he scored the penalty!
43' City deal with a barrage of corners finally get the ball away but that zip of passing is just not there
