MOR vs IRA Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
Morocco
0 - 1
FT
Iran
90'+5' A. Bouhaddouz (OG)
That'll be a tough one to swallow for Morocco who started off ever so well but simply couldn't get past the sturdy Iran defence. The Iranians kept at it and had a bit of luck in the end. Morocco now have to beat Portugal and Spain to get to the group stages. Jeez, sorry Morocco fans, tough one. For Iran, though, brilliant day! They have their keeper Beiranvand to thank for! Stunning display in goal!

That's it from me Amit Mishra. For feedbacks, do drop in a tweet @DerStoic. Hope you enjoyed the live commentary! We have another massive game coming up and please do join Anirudh Menon for the Portugal vs Spain game in an hour!
Peeeeeeeeeeeep! Full time! Iran snatch it in the end. Boy, what a day it's been! Two games so far, two late goals!
That was terrible for Bouhaddouz who simply had to get his head to the cross and he put it into his own net! Own goal!
90+5' GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL for Iran! Bouhaddouz puts it into his own net!
90+3' Freekick to Iran as Amrabat fouls Ghoddos. Dangerous position this...
90+2' A little bit of a fracas as Ziyech is involved with Amiri. Nothing more happening in the game now. Proper snorefest.
90+1' And as I say that, Da Costa tries to shoot from 40 yards and it barely reaches the corner flag. Jeez, boyo...
Six minutes have been added on. Please, something now, lads?
89' Saiss commits a foul that Rezaeian tired to make the most of. Straight out of the Klinsmann school of theatrics.
87' Amiri has the ball, in the 87th minute, and decides to play it back all the way from the Morocco half. Why would you do that?!?! Sums up the game really. Drab as hell.
86' Very direct football from both the sides with a lot of hoof-ball. Not easy watching this!
84' Jahanbakhsh is signalling for a substitution. Seems overly cramped up here. Not what the game needed, another stoppage!
83' Final substitution for Morocco as Da Costa replace Amine Harit.
81' Stuff of dreams from Beiranvand who was homeless a few years back. Jeez, that was some save to deny Ziyech. The Moroccans are well and truly pushing for the winner...
80' Finally, a moment of inspiration by Belhanda and Ziyech. The former receives a pass from Hakimi, controls it brilliant and sets up Ziyech for a stinging shot that is saved for a corner by Beiranvand!
79' Now, Montazeri comes on for Ebrahimi who looks bruised as hell after taking a few to his ribs. A flurry of substitutions should set us up nicely for the final 100 odd minutes, lads and lasses.
77' Bouhaddouz replaces El Kaabi. The Moroccan gaffer has gone for the fresher legs.
76' Sofiane Amrabat replaces his brother Nordin Amrabat. Come on man, outperform your broski.
75' Taremi does really well to pull his team out of a bit of discomfort. Al Ahmadi was free on the right and his cross was rebounded into a dangerous position. Taremi was there to retrieve the ball, turn and set his team on a break that comes to nothing, sadly...
73' Amrabat seems like he is in a lot of discomfort and is receiving treatment on the sideline. Looks like he'll be coming off here...
72' Again a bad passing from the Morocco midfield as Amrabat isn't able to collect the return pass and Iran get a throw in. The second half has been terribly uninspiring...
71' Boussoufa loses the ball in a key area and Iran nearly make him play. Ansarifard's cross isn't good enough though as Saiss clears it with ease.
70' Good block by Hakimi to prevent a cross into the box but at the expense of a corner. Belhanda safely clears from the resulting setpiece...
68' El Kaabi made a good run there, and Harit did well to get past the Iran defence to get clear. But the final pass let him down...
67' Iran manager Queiróz is putting on Taremi for skipper Shojaei who is on a yellow. Attacking sub that!
65' Harit does well to find space on the left but is again hacked down. Boussoufa picks up the second ball but his floated ball is woefully over hit.
64' Play acting but no quality. Ziyech seemed to have gone on late into a challenge but Hajsafi sure made the most out of it. Not what we're looking for, laddie.
62' No, not really. In fact, Iran broke forward but Jahanbakhsh took an age to make up his mind and then play a safe pass back to the midfield. Terrible decision. Azmoun had made the run to his left.
61' Corner to Morocco, a lucky one as it ricocheted off a Iran defender. Can they make it count?
60' Morocco are trying to probe for an opening, but just can't string the passes in the attacking half. Even the stretching the play has long gone. No service for the wide players...
59' Al Ahmadi and Jahanbakhsh go hammer and tongs at each other but both come out of it with a smile on their face. I don't really say what else to say. A very drab game so far in the second half...
57' No nonsense defending from Rezaeian as he manages to dispossess Hakimi and put the ball safely out for a throw in. The pace is quite drab here...
55' A bit of a stoppage here as Ebrahimi didn't come out well after putting in a flying and a super tackle. He essentially trapped the damn ball with that lunge! Brilliant!
54' Morocco are trying to exploit the wide areas here but Iran have defended ever so staunchly. Amrabat hasn't seen much of the ball, and Harit is dropping a lot deeper to make something happen.
53' Belhanda does well to get the ball off the Iranians with some good pressing but the ref awards a throw to the opposition. The rhythm is terribly off, for both the teams.
52' Herve Renard looks on, trying to gee up his Moroccan team. This could well be the first 0-0 game of the tournament. Iran in possession of the ball in their own half now...
51' Iran had the chance to create something as the broke forward, with four players. Azmoun had the ball but his pass is terrible and Benatia intercepts it quite easily. Shame.
50' A very start and stop second half so far as we've seen too many stoppages in play. Ziyech, this time, commits a foul.
49' Morocco have possession here and Iran are pinned in their own half, compact as ever. A pass from Amrabat is into the far post but Harit's control lets him down and he fluffs his lines.
48' A bit naught from the Iran players as Amiri fouls Harit. Avoids a yellow, though.
47' Yellow card shown to Jahanbakhsh!
46' Straight away, Amrabat gets the game heated up with a decent cross from the right. No one was there to get at the end of it though. Morocco mean business...
Peeeeeeeeeeep! The second half is underway! Iran get us started, shooting from left to right!
The players are back on the pitch and the second half is moments away!
Peeeeeeeeeep! Half time! Not a bad game. There were a few moments of dullness, but it's been a game of two quarters in the first half. Morocco started really well, but Iran clearly played much better in the final 20 odd minutes.
45+2' Freekick to Iran in their own half. That should be it here...a game that promised a lot, but we didn't see enough attacking quality for any goals...
45+1' To be honest, Morocco, after that start, will be happy to head into half time with the score being 0-0. Munir has had a lot more to do than Beiranvand in goal...
Two minutes of added on time...
44' Freekick to Iran, and again, they take a direct shot from around 40 yards! This time, Hajsafi gets a better shot in, though it was still over the bar!
43' Chance for Azmoun! Brilliant save by Munir! Morocco get the second chance as Jahanbakhsh gets the fluffed shot in, but Munir is there to deny him with a spectacular save! What a good spell for Iran that!
41' Again, Morocco are seeing a lot of the ball but are being forced into playing the long ball and that is subsequently upsetting their rhythm in the final third.
40' Jahanbakhsh had the chance to shoot following an Iran throw, but Morocco crowd the winger out and smother the chance. Defensively, the teams have been good, but not a lot of inspiration from the attackers.
39' Half a chance for El Kaabi as a cross from Ziyech was floated into the box. Safely collected by Beiranvand. A bit of an eye sore the game now.
38' South Africa had a lot of vuvuzelas back in 2010. Seems like Moroccans love the thing. Can hear of lot of that sound. Not a big fan of it, personally.
37' We have a brief stoppage here as Azmoun is down from a head injury and is receiving treatment.
36' Harit is bullied off the ball by Amiri. Seemed like a fair challenge. The former is a tricky little customer, but welcome to the big tournament, son.
35' Jahanbakhsh, from about 35 yards, decides to take the freekick. Sends it into orbit. Way to ambitions to try it out from there, laddie.
34' Yellow card shown to Al Ahmadi form bringing down Azmoun. A tactical foul as Hakimi lost the ball and the team were in terrible shape at the back. Wise.
32' Half a chance for Iran as a cross into the Morocco box isn't cleared by the defence. Cheshmi had the chance to test Munir, but the volley is terrible and sails over the bar.
31' Al Ahmadi gets the ball from his defence but is forced to pass it back as he sees more than two Iran shirts in front of him. Jeez, this has become an experiment in pragmatism.
30' Harit with a shot but it's not in the corner and is safely collected by Beiranvand. Better from Morocco as their pierced the Iran low-block on that occasion.
29' Belhanda is finding it lot more harder as Ebrahimi and Shojaei have bucked up in many ways. The movement might not be fluent, but the positioning is near-perfect. Morocco with the ball here...
27' Iran have been a lot more direct in the last 10 odd minutes and the long ball method has upset Morocco's rythm of the opening 10 minutes. They're winning the second balls well here...
26' A shot on goal from Belhanda, bravely blocked by Cheshmi who felt that! A few bruises the lad will have after the game. A World Cup battle scar is never to bad, is it?
25' A bit of a high press here from Iran now. Can safely say it's working. A lot of the Morocco possession in their own half.
24' First quarter of the game is gone and Morocco have seen a lot of the ball. The early storm has been weather by Iran it seems as they are growing into the game now. A lot more even in terms of chances being created now.
23' A bit of a mad minute there. More like a game of ping pong than football as no team managed to keep it for more than five seconds.
21' Freekick to Iran, a bit of a naughty lash by Benatia even after winning the header. Totally needless.
20' Iran's first real chance! A good break as Anzarifard was played through with a beautiful pass by Azmoun, but the former couldn't find anyone with the return pass into the box. That's better!
19' WHAT ON EARTH JUST HAPPENED!  Morocco had three shots there, all blocked by Beiranvand! First Ziyech, then Belhanda, then Benatia joined in! But they only get a corner. Top keeping and some last ditch defending.
18' A lot of possession for the Moroccans but Iran have sort of become a lot more compact after the opening 10 minutes. As I say that, Belhanda tries to bomb forward and is fouled by Amiri.
16' Morocco are so fluid to watch. Even Ziyech drops deep to ping a pass. The one touch passing is so easy on the eye. They keep attacking likes this, that first goal will come soon enough.
15' Jeez, those two Morocco centre-backs look big. Are you sure someone like Azmoun can get at the end of crosses, Iran?
14' Once again, Morocco get forward, and the cross comes in from the right, this time from Al Ahmadi. The cross is just about cleared by Pouraliganji.
12' Iran finally get forward, courtesy of a quick throw in, but Shojaei's cross is safely collected by Munir, with authority. Harit sets the counter from the following play, but the side are too eager and give the ball away in the final third.
11' Iran have faltered in the midfield. Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh need the service to make something happen. Perhaps a change in formation, Carlos?
10' Yellow card shown to the Iran skipper Shojaei for a rash tackle.
9' Haven't seen anything from the Iran attack so far. The Moroccans have pressed well so far and the opposition haven't had any answers.
8' Saiss plays a dangerous long pass that was barely cleared by Pouraliganji. The second ball fell to the Moroccan forward El Kaabi, but his shot was misdirected. Goalkick!
7' Morocco have targeted the right flank here and once again, the switch in play to find Amrabat was excellent. This time though, Hajsafi does well to get the tackle in and Morocco get a throw.
6' Amine Harit does what he does best in the attacking half. A brilliant slalom run down the middle before he is hacked down by Cheshmi. Morocco domination the opening exchanges here...
5' Another free-flowing move by the Moroccans as Amrabat finds himself on the right, shimmies to get past his man and crosses it in. Belhanda gets a good header in, but it's just wide!
4' Damn! That was pretty close! Boussoufa played it short for Ziyech but the attacker completely missed it. Amrabat's floating ball into the box is cleared by the Iran defence!
3' Corner for Morocco! Good height in that team...
2' Half a chance for the Moroccans but not close enough for the Iranian keeper to be worried about. Goalkick.
1' A couple of early freekicks in the first minute as first Iran, then Morocco get the whistle in their favour, in their own half.
Peeeeeeeeeeeeep! And we're away! Morocco get us started, shooting from left to right in their red top and their green shorts. Iran donning the white!
Seems like a festive atmosphere out there in the Krestovsky Stadium as the national anthems ring out! A must-win game for both the teams. Kickoff is moments away!
Morocco vs Iran - Preview

Iran featured in the 2014 World Cup but had a sort of a disappointing outcome, having collected just one point from the group stage. Of course, not that you can do much against Argentina! The group isn't going to get any easier this time for the side who breezed through the qualification campaign as they have Spain, Portugal and Morocco to deal with. Manager Carlos Queiroz is more than a pragmatist, I can safely say, and their upcoming opponents Morocco won't have it easy.

The Moroccans are a pretty fluent attacking side but have a pretty sturdy defence themselves. Under Herve Renard, they've mixed caution with aggression more often than not and have quite a few tricky players up their sleeve.

Iran have a Messi of their own in Sardar Azmoun, but lest we forget, Morocco have a world-class defender in Mehdi Benatia. Iran have the experience of Masoud Shojaei, and the Moroccans have Mbark Boussoufa, who plays a slightly more attacking role.

It's a bit to optimistic to call it a game that might be end to end, but why not be optimistic like me? It's the opening game for both the sides and the last thing they want to do is be cagey considering the other two sides. That being said, both teams could line up in a 4-5-1 set up.

Keep an eye out on the wide players, Amine Harit and Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Both of them are quick, can pull off a trick or two and are very direct.

This is Amit Mishra, and I'll be your host for the game! For feedback, you can reach me on @DerStoic. Let's hope for an attacking and free-flowing game, lads and lasses!

Morocco vs Iran - Team News

Morocco, the designated home side for the game, don't have too many injury concerns. The side's impressive friendly form before the World Cup will give the fans hope. They beat the likes of Slovakia and Estonia without Nabil Dirar who is a doubt for the game.

Iran, on the other hand, will be hopeful that Askhan Dejagah is fit for the clash. Mehdi Taremi is also an injury doubt for the game. Saeid Ezatolahi won't be featuring following a suspension.

Considering the other two teams in the group are Spain and Portugal, both the teams will look at this fixture and want to collect three points first and then prepare to cause an upset in the coming weeks.

Morocco vs Iran - Key Players

Both the sides have some fleet-footed players and defensive players who you can bet on to put their body on the line. It's going to be a pretty frantic and an end to end game, so don't you dare not watch it because it's only Morocco vs Iran and there is another big clash tonight. Treat this as the most high-profile undercard game you'll ever see.

Hakim Ziyech and Mehdi Benatia stand out as the key players for Morocco in my opinion, though I'm tempted to throw in Amine Harit's name in there as well. Ziyech has earned quite a lot of plaudits for his performances in an Ajax jersey and after being called 'Stupid' by Marco van Basten for choosing Morocco over the Netherlands, it's time the attacking midfielder proved a few people wrong, be it legends of the game or the armchair critics.

Benatia, a few years ago, was one of the best defenders in World football and though he might not be the same player, he is still very capable and will be keen on giving a good account of himself in the grandest stage of them all.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Sardar Azmoun will be the players to watch out for the Iranians. The duo are pretty agile and will be threats on the counter considering Morocco could see more of the ball. Jahanbakhsh set the Eredivisie on fire with Alkmaar and will be keen to impress.

Morocco vs Iran - Probable Lineups
