MUM vs CHE Match Result - ISL 2018-19
Mumbai City
2 - 0
FT
Chennaiyin
R. Fernandes 27'
M. Sougou 55'
That defeat - their eighth - has finished the season for Chennaiyin FC.
The defending champions will not make the playoffs and we'll have a new winner in the ISL this time.
Raynier Fernandes and Modou Sougou ensure Mumbai City win 2-0 and climb up to the second spot on the table, three adrift of table-toppers Bengaluru FC.
A deserving victory for Mumbai but it's curtains for Chennai.
That's it from me, Aravind Suchindran. Log onto Sportskeeda for our full coverage. See ya!
90+4' Too late for Chennaiyin FC to get anything out of this game. They are slowly retreating.
And---PEEEEEEEP! PEEEEEEEEEEEP! PEEEEEEEEEEP!
Four minutes added.
90' GOOOOOOOOOO----NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
That's offside.
Orlandi with a wonderful effort from outside the box, going towards goal but the punch from Amrinder flows the ball to the crossbar. Thoi Singh, just like Sougou earlier, is there to slot it in but the linesman rules it out for offside.
Chennaiyin FC coach John Gregory is furious and he even blocks the camera from capturing his reaction.
88' Substitution - Mumbai City FC
OFF - Arnold Issoko
ON - Pranjal Bhumij
87' Mumbai are keeping possession and looking to play out the 90. Chennaiyin put pressure and steal possession.
Salom, Issac and Augusto exchange passes and Tondongba plays a cross in, which is collected by Amrinder.
83' DUMMY PIECE!
Matias Mirabaje plays a dummy but there's no teammate behind him to capitalise on that.
79' CLOSE!
Orlandi takes a shot from the edge of the box - a push towards the bottom-right actually - and it's a great save by Amrinder to leave no chance for Thoi Singh to pump it in on the rebound.
77' Arnold unleashes pace down the right but Orlandi intercepts.
73' Mumbai City goalscorer Raynier is forced off the field due to an injury.
OFF - Raynier Fernandes
ON - Sanju Pradhan
72' Substitution - Mumbai City FC.
OFF - Rafael Bastos
ON - Matias Mirabaje
72' Substitution - Chennaiyin FC.
OFF - Laldinliana. Renthlei
ON - Francisco Fernandes
70' Bastos is the second person to be booked for Mumbai for a foul on Thoi Singh.
Yellow - Rafael Bastos (Mumbai City)
69' CHANCE!
Sougou almost close to making it 3-0 in Mumbai's favour. A long ball into the box and the Senegalese makes a run for it. He beats the goalkeeper with his first touch but the Chennaiyin FC defenders surround and prevent him from scoring.
66' Raphael Augusto has to spend some time outside the pitch because of tussle with Sehnaj Singh.
Sehnaj had won the ball but the follow-through got Augusto.
62' Substitution - Chennaiyin FC.
OFF - Inigo Calderon
ON - Andrea Orlandi
60' GOIAN NOT LETTING IT GO IN.
Two sliding challenges by Lucian Goian deny Chennaiyin FC any chance at pulling one back in this game.
55' DONE AND DUSTED!
Sougou with a poacher's finish. Rafael Bastos gushes into the box by playing the ball to himself through a defender, takes a poke at goal from the right, which is forced away by Sanjiban.
Sougou, however, jumps on that loose ball, plants it into the back of the net.
All over for Chennaiyin FC.
52' MISS!
Back-to-back chances for Chennaiyin and it's the second chance really that could have given them the equaliser.
Cross into the far post from Issac. Raphael Augusto is caught in awkward leap. He has the goal wide open to head it in but he is only able to shoot above the frame.
51' LOVELY!
Bastos
waits to play the pass and then gets involved in a 1-2 with Paulo Machado while barging into the box. Lovely move but it's broken down by Mailson.
47' CHANCE!
Arnold drops it nicely from the left for an unmarked Paulo Machado but the Mumbai City captain's volley is over the bar.
46' BACK ON!
Chennaiyin FC are 45 minutes away from being out of the contention for the ISL playoffs. They need to get two goals past the adamant Mumbai City defence at this stage.
PHEW!
The hosts, Mumbai City FC, have almost completed the job of knocking out the defending champions from the title contention of the ISL. They have a 1-0 lead at the break, thanks to a well-taken shot by Raynier Fernandes. Modou Sougou was close to doubling the lead for Jorge Costa's side but was unlucky to see the ball bounce off the crossbar.
Chennaiyin FC have had a couple of chances but Thoi Singh and Carlos Salom have been unable to test the Mumbai defence with a great attempt.
Second half coming up.
45+2' WOODWORK!
Arnold
wins possession and Mumbai look threatening on the counter again. Sougou makes a great run, Mailson fails to return to defend for Chennaiyin and he tries to chip it above CFC goalkeeper Sanjiban - a great shot but bounces off the frame.
And that's the end of the first half.
45+1' The follow-through to the challenge on Augusto earns Sehnaj a booking.
Yellow - Sehnaj Singh (Mumbai City)
Two minutes added.
45' TOUCHING DISTANCE.
Raphael Augusto plays the pass of the game to Thoi Singh but the winger, instead of squaring it to Carlos Salom or Issac, tries to pick the far post from the left frame. It flows across.
42' POWERLESS POKE.
Thoi Singh is free at the edge of the box but he shoots with his weaker left foot and that's easy-peezy for Amrinder.
Another near-post attempt by Chennaiyin FC is cleared away and Raphael Augusto is down in pain now after a challenge by Arnold.
40' COUNTER!
Mumbai get rid of a corner and push forward. And there's a brilliant ball by Machado again to Arnold but Eli Sabia intercepts.
35' HIGH BY THOI!
Chennaiyin FC are pushing up front and creating a lot more chances now.
Issac floats a wonderful ball in from the left and Thoi Singh towers over his marker to get a header in but the glance is only inches over the bar.
Amrinder had it covered though.
32' SAVE!
And that further piles the pressure on Chennaiyin FC.
Carlos Salom is inside the box and no one is able to stop that ball by Raphael Augusto.
Salom tries to slot it into the bottom-left corner but Amrinder makes a diving block and drifts the ball away for a corner.
The Argentine striker was actually offside there but the linesman failed to read that.
30' ISL over for Chennai? Looks likely.
Remember, they cannot drop any more points if they want to qualify for the top four. If Mumbai win this, they will move up to the second spot on the table.
27' RAYNIER REIGNS IN MUMBAI!
Raynier scores his second goal of the ISL and what a way to do it!
Receiving the ball at the edge of the box, he looks up, turns, fires the ball in between the legs of Eli Sabia and it's not like it has a lot of power either.
But it's beaten a diving Sanjiban Ghosh to roll into the bottom-left corner.
25' Another Mumbai move is broken at the centre of the box. A couple of defenders round up Bastos and don't allow him to reach out to that chipped ball by Machado.
22' CHANCE!
Issac's free-kick to the far post is directed towards Mailson but the Mumbai defence head it away just in time.
20' NO FOUL?
Machado breaks on the counter but is stopped at his tracks by Tondongba. The hosts feel undone by that and Jorge Costa is furious with the officials.
17' Salom goes for a first-time shot from the left after a wonderful through-ball by Raphael Augusto. It's nowhere near the goal and flows wide.
15' Chennaiyin FC break into the opposition box, Lucian Goian slides to stop Carlos Salom from shooting. The ball is still near Salom and he goes down after being dispossessed by Joyner Laurenco expecting a penalty. Nothing from it.
12' FOOT FAIL.
Sauvik Chakraborty starts a run and he goes all the way up to the box, playing a one-two with Sougou but he loses his footing and that's the end of that promising move.
10' Sougou's lucky touch is not cleared and he sets up Rafael Bastos nicely on the left side of the box but the shot lacks power and is no worry for Sanjiban Ghosh.
5'  CHANCE!
Machado splits the Chennaiyin FC with a clever through-ball for Arnold but Eli Sabia recovers and CFC can breathe...for now.
Off the corner, Lucian Goian tries to find the top of the net, but it's over the bar.
3' COLLECTION!
Chennaiyin FC steal possession and Issac goes for a cross ... or was it a shot?.... and Amrinder pockets it well.

FDI.
The foreigners have scored 7 out of the 10 goals for Mumbai City FC this season. Modou Sougou has three, while Rafael Bastos and Arnold Issoko have two each.
W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W.
Chennaiyin FC's form has to be this if they want to qualify for the ISL playoffs.
Any L or even a D there will make it impossible for them to make the top 4. Even with this, they need a couple of other results to go their way to make the semis.
Great form.
Mumbai are five matches unbeaten and they have kept 4 clean sheets in those five games.

Mumbai City FC vs Chennaiyin FC preview:

Fresh off their morale boosting 4-2 come-from-behind win over Delhi Dynamos, Mumbai City FC will tighten their hold on a top four spot with a win over Chennaiyin FC later this evening.

Chennaiyin FC are the defending champions of the Indian Super League (ISL) but a defeat in this game will assure Indian football fans of a new champion this season.

Mumbai City are looking to be one of those but they a couple of tricky games coming up - first against Chennaiyin FC and then against table-toppers Bengaluru FC.

Coach Jorge Costa would, however, be concerned only about how Mumbai come strong from this tricky test.

It's a tricky encounter indeed as Chennaiyin FC looked good for most parts from their 0-0 draw with Kerala Blasters last week. If not for the profligate forward line, who have combined accounted for just one goal of the 12 Chennaiyin have scored, the Marina Machans would have secured three points from that Southern Derby.

Mumbai can take some inspiration from the fact that they have won four of their last five outings in the ISL. Their only forgettable performance came against FC Goa, where they were mauled 0-5.

Since then, we've seen a brand new Mumbai team which has got most of its weaknesses fixed. The defence has been one of the best in the league, bettered only by the table toppers Bengaluru FC.

The forward line of Arnold Issoko, Rafael Bastos and Paulo Machado have shown what they are about sporadically but they were the ones who rescued Mumbai in the previous win over Delhi Dynamos, a game in which they fought back after being a goal down at half time.

Chennaiyin cannot drop any more points if they wish to make the top four.

This game would be showcased to Bundesliga Ambassador Lothar Matthaus. The former Germany captain and World Cup winner was in Kochi for the Kerala Blasters vs Jamshedpur FC game, but it was marred by poor refereeing and a boycott by Manjappada, the Blasters' Fan Army.

The ISL would be hoping that these two teams play their natural game in front of their special guest instead of approaching each other cautiously.

When and where to watch: Watch the Mumbai City FC vs Chennaiyin FC game on Hotstar and Jio TV. TV telecast on Star Sports Network. The kick off is at 7.30 pm IST.
