PER vs DEN Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
0 - 1
C. Cueva (PM) 45'+1'
59' Y. Poulsen
That was some staunch defending from Denmark right at the end to keep their lead and pick up the win! Peru tried and tried and tried, but Schmeichel was on the top of his game and was there to deny them every single time. Easily my choice for the man of the match award.

After the drama of last night, this was a much-needed game where two of the lesser known teams produced an epic encounter. Peru can go to the second game against France with their heads held high and can trouble the Blues if they play like they did today. Age Hareide's men will now hope to make it two in two when they take on Australia!

This is Amit Mishra signing off! See you when I see you!
90+5' Peeeeeeeeeeeep! Full time! Peru with a throw in! The last throw of the dice! Or not? The ref blows the whistle! Denmark with the win! What a dramatic finish to one helluva game! Who says only the big boys can play football, huh?
90+5' Schmeichel does brilliantly to thwart the corner! Denmark break but Jorgensen didn't have the pace or energy to break!
90+4' Corner to Peru! This is last-gasp stuff! Can they steal a draw?
90+4' Yellow card shown to Poulsen for dissent
90+3' They mess it up while trying to waste time and Peru instantly get the ball back and set up an attack...
90+2' Denmark managed to keep the ball on the left and win a throw in. Braithwaite does well to win a corner from the subsequent throw in...
90+1' And Cuevas nearly finds Guerrero with a pass from the left! That was hard to control and the Danes get a goalkick. Quite a few nervy Danish players out there...
Five minutes have been added on!
90' Jorgensen did well to hold the ball for a few seconds and waste a few precious seconds but Ramos wins it back to set Peru on the attack again. THEY ARE RELENTLESS!
89' Peru were doing well there until Ruidiaz's handball put an end to the move. Amidst all the commotion, he replaced Farfan in the 85th minute. Jeez, this game is intense!
88' Delaney was booked a few minutes earlier by the way for a foul on Yotun.
87' Substitution for Peru

Tapia is OFF
Aquino is ON
86' ERIKSEN'S SHOT IS SAVED! Good save by Gallese! hat was the chance to seal it! A nervy few minutes still left!
85' Schmeichel has made six saves already, tied for the most number of saves this World Cup so far. Some tournament for the keepers huh?
84' FARFAN WITH A SHOT! Saved on the line! What a run by Carillo to set up the former Schalke star! An unorthodox save by Schmeichel who's foot keeps Denmark in the lead! WOW!
83' Denmark now seeing a lot of the ball as Peru seem a bit jaded after those intense 30 odd minutes. Can they give it one final push?
82' WHAT A CHANCE FOR DENMARK TO SEAL IT! But Jorgensen is denied by Advincula! One hell of a block that. Brilliant pass by Eriksen to set it up!
81' Substitution for Denmark

Christensen is OFF
Jorgensen is ON
80' Peru now use the long ball but Carillo is just offside! 10 minutes to go. Peru have given it their all!
78' Guerrero with a BACKHEEL attempt! Jeez, that would have been a World Cup goal to remember! Cueva again showed brilliant feet on the left to find the forward in the box who's first touch was out of the world. Just wide! Schmeichel wasn't getting there!
77' Sisto's substitution has helped Peru on the right. Advincula is a lot more adventurous now on the right as he doesn't have to worry about the Celta man's pace anymore...
75' Play resumes and Peru are back on the ball. Enough time to level it up and go for the winner. The Danes have been under the cosh for a while now...
74' A brief stoppage in play as Tapia is down after taking a heavy blow from Kjaer. Looks nasty that.
73' Corner to Denmark. Sweet play from Eriksen to win it, but his cross is woeful and fails to get past the first man. Another corner, though.
72' Denmark have barely seen the ball in the last few minutes! Advincula manages a neat little flick to test Schmeichel, but it's saved quite easily.
71' ANOTHER CHANCE FOR PERU! Carillo gets a brilliant cross into the box, but Poulsen, of all people, is there to deny Guerrero the tap in! Wow, this is intense. More of the same please!
69' DAMN! That was close! A smashing cross finds Rodriguez who's looping header to the far post isn't made use of by Farfan! Peru getting closer to the leveler!
68' Freekick for Peru as the ref didn't like Delaney's challenge on Tapia. A bit far off for a direct shot, but don't put it past Jotun...
67' Substitution for Denmark

Sisto is OFF
Braithwaite is ON
66' Some reprieve for the Danes as they ease the pressure with a move on the left. Eriksen's cross is a tad too much for Jorgensen, however...
65' Peru's press has become a lot more intense now as they go in search for the leveler. Eriksen perhaps needs to drop deeper to help out in terms of calming things in midfield...
63' Straight away, Guerrero gets a touch and nearly scores! Smartly controlled the ball in the box, passed it for Cueva and received a cross to head it straight into Schmeichel's  arms! This is quite end to end now...
62' Substitution for Peru: Paolo Guerrero, the all-time record scorer for Peru comes on for Flores.
61' WHAT A SAVE Schmeichel! Was that Kasper or Peter? Jeez, a strong left hand to deny Flores who had space on the left to pick the far right! This game has well and truly erupted!
And it all came from a Peru attack! Kjaer found Eriksen in acres of space down the midfield and you can't afford to do that with Eriksen! The man can pick a pass! Poulsen did well to keep himself onside and the finish with his left was sublime, as was the pass to him by Eriksen!
59' GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL! Poulsen! What a pass! What a finish!
58' It has been a fine second half so far, without the goal, albeit. Can sense the opening here...Peru breaking forward with pace...
57' FLORES! Just wide! Smashing bit of play by Cueva, the man who missed the penalty, to set up not one but two teammates on the right! Carrillo with an airshot first, then Flores with the wayward shot! Should make these count!
56' Brilliant switch in play initiated by Ramos to find Cueva. Peru keep it going in the attacking third, probing for an opening...
55' Kjaer pumps it long but Poulsen went too early and is caught offside. Denmark dominating proceedings as of now. Peru need that bit of calmness in midfield. A bit haphazard...
53' Not the best of deliveries from Eriksen who's darting shot is blocked by Ramos. He gets the rebound in but it's on his weaker left and over the bar!
52' Freekick to the Danes in a dangerous position. Eriksen's cross needs to be accurate here, the Danes have good aerial height in Kjaer and Christensen...
51' A pretty open game in the second half so far as Denmark get forward. Jorgensen's brilliant little touch sets up Delaney for the shot, but it's way over!
50' Peru break forward with Farfan who shows a lightning burst of pace. To Christensen's credit, though, he keeps up and manages to get a block in on the right.
49' Schone does really well to get out of a tight situation and lay off the ball to Delaney. The ref, though, awards a freekick to the Danes who are in possession following the freekick...
48' Sisto marauds down the centre but takes a while to get rid of the ball as Peru get back to deny the Danes an opening. Good defensive shape, that.
47' Peru will press in the opening exchanges of the second half. They started the first half well and have that bit of energy compared to the Danes who are much calmer in their approach.
46' The Danes push forward immediately. You've got to say they have that bit of a psychological edge the way the first half ended!
Peeeeeeeeeeep! The second half is underway! Can Cueva put that miss behind him?
Peeeeeeeeeeep! Half time! Wow, good start, a bit of a sombre few minutes, and one helluva ending to the first half!
45+2' Poulsen, you lucky lucky man! That was an awful penalty by Cueva and the Danes now get forward and win a corner!
45+1' NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Cueva smashes it out of orbit, close to Sputnik! Jeez!
44' PENALTY TO PERU! Poulsen brought down Cueva! Clear as daylight!
43' Oooooooh! That looked like a penalty as Cueva went down in the box! VAR time!
41' Ex Sportskeeda employee Nishant Jayaram feels Guerrero will come on and score the winner. To be honest, he should have started!
40' Delaney with half a chance! A shot from the left, but he didn't catch it well. Poulsen couldn't get there in time either.
39' TERRIBLE. Jeez, Eriksen. He smashed the centre of the wall! Expected better. Sisto's follow up shot is straight at Gallese.
38' Yellow card shown to Tapia for bringing down Sisto in a dangerous area. This is Christian Eriksen territory.
36' Denmark have asserted their dominance in terms of possession, considering they have the more technical players there. Peru are always a threat on the counter, though.
35' Lasse Schone is on for Kvist. He'll slot in alongside Delaney in the central midfield.
34' Denmark seeing a lot of the ball here and are trying to use the wide areas. Larsen and Sisto on the left have been involved quite often, but they just can't find the final pass...
32' Kvist is down again and it seems like his game might be over. Shame really. Not much you can do when you take a Farfan knee to your back!
31' Tapia and Jotun have been immense in the Peru midfield so far. Denmark pump it long but the two midfielders cover the ground and the latter wins the second ball.
30' Peru keep the ball after playing the corner short. Denmark have a lot of bodies back and Peru are being forced to pass it around in midfield...
29' Farfan with a big chance but Kjaer just about gets a foot to it and denies the former Schalke star! Corner to Peru! That was perhaps the best chance we've had so far in the game!
28' Kvist took a knock to his back and is receiving treatment. Lasse Schone is warming up, but Kvist should be able to continue...
27' New BVB signing Delaney decides to let one fly from around 25 yards. Had the space to smash one in, but it was wayward. Could have passed, had options to his right.
26' Another corner. Denmark do have decent height themselves, but jeez, Peru are so busy in their own box. Eriksen manages to pick the second ball but his cross is terribly over-hit and Peru get a goalkick.
25' Corner to Denmark. Good play by Poulsen to win it off Trauco. Smart play by Eriksen with the initial pass. Can they make something happen?
24' And it's cleared with authority by Rodriguez. Nothing doing in the Peru box. They are so well-built, you can't mess around with crosses and throw ins, can you?
23' Denmark win a throw near the Peru box. A long throw incoming...
22' Eriksen has been starved of the service so far. Peru's pressing is still evident, but Sisto is seeing a lot more of the ball. The Danes need to get Eriksen on the ball.
20' Denmark are getting forward more than they did in the opening 15 minutes. Sisto again at the heart of it as he shows quick feet to get away from Advincula and gets a shot away. It's blocked by the Peru defence, though. Much better from the Danes...
19' Seemed like Christensen blocked the Peru 'keeper Gallese and the ref blows his whistle. Complete waste. Peru on the ball now...
18' Corner to Denmark, their 1st of the game. Good play by Delaney and Sisto to combine and find room on the left. Advincula is there to thwart them and give away a corner...
17' Cueva this time gets on the act and makes a driving run on the right. His cross is blocked by Larsen. A bulk of the chances have come from Denmark's left flank so far...
16' Kjaer's lousy pass is intercepted by the Peru midfield and off they go on another counter. Advincula finds space but the brilliant Christensen gets back to get the tackle in time! Boy, this is intriguing stuff from Peru
15' The Danes clear without much fuss and lump it forward. They are trying to evade the press here, but boy are Peru well-drilled defensively.
14' But they can't make anything from it and Peru break in turn, winning a corner as Tapia's shot is deflected! Peru have quite a lot of height here, fellas...
13' Schmeichel makes a brilliant save to deny Cueva! That might just wake the Danes up who pick the ball and break...
12' Peru have already had 3 shots while the Danes have barely probed the Peru goal. Good start from the South Americans. A lot of the wingplay is coming from the right!
11' Jeez, Advincula and Carillo nearly get a shot away after one heck of a one-two move. The latter's little Cruyff turn made the move. Peru, rampant.
10' Eriksen is fouled by Jotun as he tries to drop deeper and make something happen. These Peru players are so up for it. Denmark just need to slow it down.
9' Trauco gets forward this time to float one into the box but Schmeichel comes out quickly to smother the cross. The pressing is relentless. Can Peru keep it up?
8' Schmeichel now tries the long ball to Jorgensen but the forward isn't able to control it well. Peru win the second ball and Jotun tries a shot from about 20 yards, straight at Schmeichel!
7' Denmark have the ball in their own half and I see 6 Peru players in there! Mad pressing this!
5' Another smart piece of play by the Peruvians comes to nothing. They get the ball forward form the left, via Cueva, but he can't keep up and the defence smother the chance...
4' Finally a forward foray by Denmark, coming from the right, as Eriksen shifted there to help out Jorgensen. The forward's excellent close control set it up for Eriksen, but his cross is wayward and is cleared by the Peru defence
3' Peru with the press now, manage to wrestle ball away and win a freekick in their own half. The Danes haven't seen much of the ball at all...
2' Damn! Peru work it pretty well and manage to get a cross in from the left. It was kept in well by Carillo but the the Danes just about get it away despite a few penalty calls from the Peruvians. Nice sharp start from the South Americans!
1' The Peruvians are seeing a lot of the ball in the opening exchanges, mostly in their own half...
Peeeeeeeeeeeep! We're underway! Peru are in their worldie of a kit, with the red diagonal stripe, shooting from left to right! Denmark are in their all red kit!
Peru vs Denmark - An upbeat preview

Game three of the third day promises to be another humdinger. Denmark and Peru didn’t have the smoothest of rides making it to the World Cup as both the teams had to come out of the second round of the qualifiers. While Denmark overcame the Irish on their own territory, Peru eased past New Zealand to make it to the World Cup after a long three-decade wait.

The lineups have been named and perhaps the biggest surprise is that Peru legend Paolo Guerreiro won’t be starting. The 34-year old has had a remarkable journey to the World Cup, let me tell you. After nearly missing out despite playing a key role in qualification, he was handed the go-ahead after a lot of fellow football colleagues intervened.

Denmark are perhaps the favourites ahead of the game because they have a well-oiled team. Christian Eriksen will be the star-man of course, but the likes of Christensen, Kjaer, Delaney and Kvist have been around for a while and have the experience to put in the sturdy displays that Age Hareide prefers.

This might not be the Dynamite team the Danes had in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, with the likes of Michael Laudrup and Preben Elkjær Larsen running riot, but hey, the team does have a few brilliant individuals and the World Cup does get the best out of players, so fingers crossed!

This is Amit Mishra, and I’ll be your host for the game! For feedbacks, you can reach me @DerStoic on Twitter or drop an email to Let’s hope for an open game, fellas!

Peru vs Denmark - Team News

The good news is neither side have any injury concerns ahead of the game. Peru qualified for the tournament in controversial circumstances but have quite a good team to cause a few upsets. Age isn’t on their side, though, so fitness might be a worry in the coming weeks.

Paolo Guerrero is fit enough to start the game and he’s had a whirlwind last few months after being banned for testing positive for cocaine. He claimed it was a byproduct of sipping Tea and he actually didn’t snort the despised substance and after much debate, he was finally included in the squad and rightfully so. The man has seen it all and deserves to play in the Peru side that’ll be featuring in their first World Cup since 1982.

Peru vs Denmark - Key Players

Jefferson Farfan, remember him? The attacker used to tear Bundesliga defences apart donning the Royal Blues of Schalke and after a subpar few years following his exit from Schalke, he has managed to keep his head down and work hard for one last hurrah. Guerrero too was a Bundesliga hotshot a few years ago and though he might not have the same pace to terrorise the defenders, he can still strike the damn ball.

Denmark is a team bristling with talent and the obvious player to watch out for is Christian Eriksen. After helping Spurs finish in the top 3, his creative input will be key as the Danes will see more of the ball against Peru. Andreas Christensen is another young player to watch out for as the Chelsea starlet is coming on the back of a consistent season having lifted the FA Cup.
