SER vs SWI Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
1 - 2
A. Mitrović 5'
52' G. Xhaka
90' X. Shaqiri
Switzerland become the first team this World Cup to overcome a deficit and they have done it style, blowing this group wide open. Serbia will be ruing their defensive lapses. They were 45 minutes away from making history but now they will have to beat Brazil in their final game to go through. This is why we love this game!
That's it from me. Join us tomorrow for more exhilarating World Cup action. Toodle-oo
FT: Serbia 1-2 Switzerland
The ref blows his whistle and that's it. What a comeback by the Swiss
96' Shaqiri launches one again but it flies into the third tier. Surely that's it
95' Switzerland almost have another. Embolo in acres of space on the right, tries to thread it through to Shaqiri but it's intercepted by Tosic
93' Amidst the chaos, Shaqiri has been booked for his celebration. He doesn't care. Switzerland do not care
93' Final throw of the dice for Switzerland. Drmic replaces Zuber
91' 4 minutes to be added on. Can Serbia find a way back? How the tables have turned in this group. Desperate times for Serbia now
90' GOOOOAALLLLLLLL. Shaqiriiiiiiiii. What a counter from Switzerland. Zuber with a delightful defence splitting pass to Shaqiri who is left all on his own against the keeper and he makes no mistake. Switzerland lead. What a stunning turnaround from Petkovic's men. They looked down and out after 5 minutes
89' Well-flighted into the box but Mitrovic towers over everyone else and gets a clear header away. Too easy
88' The corners are coming thick and fast. Another one for Switzerland. Rodriguez to deliver
87' Mitrovic now goes into the ref's book.
86' The corner is well defended and Radonovic bursts down the left flank to win a corner of his own for Serbia. Kolarov delivers but it's easily dealt with
85' Oh Nemanja Matic. He's already been booked but still launches into a rash tackle on Shaqiri. The referee though is lenient and only a freekick is awarded which Rodriguez takes but it's off the wall and out for a corner.
83' WHAT A CHANCE WHAT A SAVE BY STOJKOVIC. Embolo nods down perfectly into Gavranovic's path and he pokes it low towards the corner but Stojkovic's outstretched hand gets in the way.
82' IVANOVIC WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Zuber finds space on the left but can't beat Ivanovic who almost pokes it past his own keeper.
81' Milivojević draws the short straw and is replaced by Radonjić
80' Switzerland probing but there are 10 Serbians behind the ball and it's eventually booted out by Akanji
78' Freekick for Serbia. Lovely delivery by Tadic but it's met quite wonderfully by Schar and Switzerland clear their lines
76' Shout for a handball as Ljajic's strike's richocets off a Swiss defender but Shaqiri picks up the ball and quickly breaks. However, he is crowded out and loses possession.
74' WHAT A MISS BY Gavranovic. But the flag is raised. Shaqiri with another defence splitting pass but Gavranovic somehow contrives to find the side netting with just the keeper to beat. However, to his delight the flag goes up
72' Schalke man Embolo gets ready on the sidelines. Dzemaili the man to be replaced.
70' Geez this game has come to life in the second half. It's end to end stuff here as both teams go all-out in search of the win
68' What a chance for Serbia. Kolarov whips a delicious ball between the keeper and the defenders but watches helplessly as it flies past Mitrovic's boot.
66' Penalty shout as Mitrovic is wrestled to the ground by three Swiss defenders but the ref points the other way much to his bemusement.
65' Game is poised on a knife's edge at the moment. The next goal wins it in my opinion. Switzerland look the more threatening side but Serbia have the talent to pull something outta the hat
64' Serbia substitution. Adam Ljajic replaces Kostic
62' Sommer you absolute legend. Receives a backpass, casually performs a stepover like he's in his backyard and dribbles it out of the box before booting it into touch.
60' Milinkovic-Savic muscles Behrami to the ground and is penalised for it. This ref is way too whistle-loving
58' OFF THE CROSSBAR. Shaqiri picks it up on the edge of the box and curls one beautifully towards the far corner but it clatters off the bar. Stojkovic has no chance yet again but breathes a sigh of relief as it flies into the stands. It's all Switzerland at the moment
56' Switzerland have found a goal out of absolutely nothing. Serbia's wait for a R16 spot looks set to continue unless they can find another goal. Mitrovic has looked threatening in the air but his finishing has let him down after the goal
54' That strike came outta nowhere. It pains me to say this as an Arsenal fan, but where the hell was that this whole season?
52' XHAAAAAAKAAAAAA. OH MY GOD WHAT A STRIKE. Rodriguez finds Shaqiri whose shot is blocked. It comes out to Xhaka who leathers one into the top corner from 30 yards out. That almost burned a hole through the net. Stojkovic looks on helplessly. Even de Gea would not have saved that
50' Given away by Xhaka. Ah when have I heard that before? Tadic picks it up, beats a defender but it's poked away for a corner. Tadic to take
48' Lovely ball over the top by Shaqiri who finds Zuber but his cut back is poor and Serbia clear yet again. Story of the game so far
47' Bright start from the Swiss as Shaqiri drives through the left hand side but he's met by 3 Serbian defenders and the ball is sent out to touch
46' First substitution of the game. Seferovic is off and Gavranovic is on.
And we are back! Switzerland have struggled in the first 45 but can they produce a fightback? We will find out
Peeeeep peeeeep. The ref brings an end to a boooooooring first half. Serbia have the lead and are 45 minutes away from making history. Switzerland have one half to salvage their World Cup campaign. Join us in 10 for the second half.
47' Matic the next Serbian to be booked as he makes a rash challenge on Lichtsteiner.
46' TAAAADIIICC. Just over. Milinkovic-Savic cushions a beautiful header into Tadic's path but his first time hit flies inches wide of Sommer's post. How close was that?
45' 2 minutes of added time. Why oh why do you do this ref? No one wants this. This has been dull as dull can be.
44' WHAT A MISS. Corner is delivered by Kolarov and Tosic throws himself at it but cannot connect and it bounces off Matic's knee and out to safety
43' Serbia bring in the heavy artillery as Tosic, Ivanovic and Milenković make their way into the box.
42' It's gone back to a snoozefest has this game. Flashes of brilliance but nothing to really write home about. As I say it, Serbia have their first corner of the game
41' Tadic twists and turns and leaves Schar on his backside. However, the final ball is lacking and it flies over Mitrovic's leaping figure
39' Shaqiri finds himself on the floor again, this time off a challenge from Milivojević who is booked for his efforts.
38' Shaqiri goes down like he's been shot, clutching his face but the ref looks the other way. Absolutely nothing in that.
36' Kolarov whips it in but it's headed out to Milinkovic-Savic whose first-time shot is straight at the keeper. Close call that. Switzerland get away with one.
36' Freekick in a promising position for Serbia. Kolarov to deliver. We all know what he's capable of
34' Another wonderful delivery by Shaqiri into the box but Stojkovic holds onto it like a long-lost lover and danger is averted.
33' Milinkovic-Savic gets the first yellow of the night. A late challenge on Schar and a deserved booking
32' WHAT ARE YOU DOING ZUBER? Shaqiri threads the needle and finds Zuber on the edge of the box. He has all the time in the world but decides to chip one into the far post and it finds a Serbian head. Why did he not shoot?
31' WHAT A CHANCE WHAT A SAVE BY STOJKOVIC. A delightful ball is played into the box by Zuber and Dzemaili finds himself in acres of space. He flicks the outside of his boot at it but the keeper gets down low to make a fine stop.
30' Milivojevic crumples in a heap holding his shin. Why not when you have the lead? He gets up soon enough
28' YAWN. The game has fizzled out after an electric start. How this Swiss side are ranked 6th for the life of me I cannot tell you. Put that into an entrance exam and let them IIT engineers figure it out.
26' Finally a move by Switzerland and they win a corner. Rodriguez delivers but Akanji misdirects his header way wide of the post. Still no work for Stojkovic
23' Shaqiriiii. The little man is being kicked out of the game as if he were Leo Messi and he is not happy one bit
21' It's all Serbia at the moment. Switzerland are unable to find a way through the midfield and are resorting to route one stuff but Seferovic is far too isolated up top to make it count.
17' Lovely play from Serbia again. Matic drives through the heart of the Swiss midfield, feeds Ivanovic on the right who again delivers a peach into the box. Mitrovic decides to channel his inner Zlatan and bicycles one just over the post.
16' Mitrovic is absolutely bullying these Swiss defenders. Again towers over Schar, but the ref spots an infringement and halts play
15' Kolarov sends Lichtsteiner back to Zurich with a wonderful cut back. However, he tries to be a little too fancy and dinks one over the head of Mitrovic. It finds Milinkovic-Savic on the edge of the box but he's crowded out.
14' IVANOVIC you beauty. Controls one on the right side and volleys it across the box first time, Mitrovic again too strong for Akanji but this time he fires his header way over the bar
13' Seferovic looks in some pain but he's willing to soldier on. Top lad.
11' Fun fact: Mitrovic has a whopping 15 goals in his last 18 matches for Serbia.
10' Half chance for the Swiss. Switzerland clawing their way back into the game. Rodriguez outmuscles Ivanovic and whips one in but Dzemaili miscues it horribly and sends it near the corner flag.
8' Corner for Serbia. Shaqiri to deliver but it's easily dealt with by Tosic. These Serbian defenders are monsterous
6' Switzerland hit right back but Dzemaili is dispossessed in a promising position.
5' GOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLL. MITROOOOVICCC. Matic wins the ball, lays it off to Tadic. He delivers a peach of a ball into the box and Mitrovic towers over the defender and heads a bullet into the back of the net. What a start to the game
3' Akanji shimmies past Ivanovic and finds Dzemaili on the right. He lays it off to Xhaka who blazes it way way way over the post. That's probably meeting Ramos's penalty somewhere in Mars
2' Chaos in the box as Mitrovic goes down under pressure but the ref says nothing doing. Get on with it Mitro
2' Kolarov bombs down the left in his trademark fashion and finds Mitrovic in the middle but Switzerland deal with the threat
1' AAAAANNND we are off! Switzerland, kicking from right to left, get us underway in their all white kit
We are just minutes away from kickoff. The players are out on the field and the anthems are blazing away in the background. This promises to be an absolute HUMDINGER
Brazil ran riot in the final few minutes against Costa Rica, making this game a must-win for Switzerland. They wouldn't be averse to a point either as they will fancy their chances against a relatively weak Costa Rica side. For Serbia, the equation is simple. Win and they go through.
Serbia have made just one change to their line up with Kostic replacing Ljajic. But all eyes will be rooted on Manchester United target Milinkovic-Savic who dazzled in the opener against Costa Rica.

For Switzerland, the onus will be on Shaqiri as always to provide the impetus while Haris Seferovic leads the line with support from Zuber and Dzemaili.
Managers speaketh:

Vladimir Petkovic: "We can't just play physically. We also have to run more than our opponent and that's what we did against Brazil. We have to play our good football. We want to try to keep up the pace for 90 minutes."

Mladen Krstajic: “We have to be a compact unit when defending and attacking that is our goal."
Serbia vs Switzerland - Preview

Ah, those diabolical FIFA Rankings. According to said ranking system, Serbia and Switzerland are separated by a whopping 28 spots, but on paper, they appear much more evenly-matched. Serbia are one step away from entering unchartered territory - history beckons: they have never made the knockout stages of a World Cup as an independent nation and a win against Switzerland will ensure this team lives in the memories of fans forever.

The fact that they replaced former coach Slavoljub Muslin with the inexperienced Mladen Krstajić ahead of the tournament makes the feat all the more impressive.

Switzerland, on the other hand, went toe to toe with Brazilian royalty and looked unperturbed while at it. Arguably the best team they have ever had since the warriors of '54, the Swiss look well-equipped to get through their group and even trouble some of the bigwigs as the tournament progresses.
Confirmed lineups:

Serbia (4-2-3-1): Stojkovic, Ivanovic, Milenkovic, Tosic, Kolarov, Matic, Milivojevic, Tadic, Kostic, Milinkovic-Savic, Mitrovic
Switzerland (4-2-3-1): Sommer; Lichtsteiner, Schaer, Akanji, Rodriguez; Behrami, Xhaka; Shaqiri, Dzemaili, Zuber; Seferovic

Serbia vs Switzerland: Team News

It's amazing what a little confidence does to you. Switzerland, with the No. 6 rank firmly nailed into every player's mind, looked the part against Brazil. Granit Xhaka decided to shed his Arsenal skin and perform his best Andrea Pirlo impersonation, pinging balls to his wingers with disdain. Xherdan Shaqiri and Zuber reminded us of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in their prime, forcing Marcelo and Danilo to dance to their tunes.

Seferovic meanwhile looked like a Seferovic as he held the ball up well but provided hardly anything else. Coach Vladimir Petkovic is unlikely to tinker with a team that gave such a good account of themselves against one of the tournament favorites. While Valon Behrami picked up a niggle, he has been passed fit and is expected to take his place in the side.

Serbia on the other hand scraped past Costa Rica with a defiant defensive display. Some brilliance from the lad everyone is suddenly raving about - Milinkovic-Savic- and a devastating swing of Kolarov's boot mean Serbia are one win away from making the R16 for the first time in their history.

Enforcer Luka Milivojevic was an injury concern until about 24 hours ago but he seems to have shaken it off and has been given the green light. Kostic sparkled after coming off the bench and could be handed a start by manager Mladen Krstajic while Mitrovic will continue to lead the line for the Eagles.

Serbia vs Switzerland: Probable lineups

Switzerland have faced Yugoslavia 13 times in the past (D5, L6), but this will be their first match against Serbia as an independent nation.

Serbia vs Switzerland: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: Serbia 1-1 Switzerland.

Switzerland put up a wall Donald Trump would be proud of when they faced Brazil in the opener, but I expect them to be much more dynamic in attack tonight. Serbia are known for their defensive solidity so I don't see too many goals in this one. I don't think there will be much between the two sides and a moment of brilliance could be the difference in the end. Score draw it is.
