I'm done here. Russia are in the World Cup quarter-finals. Spain will be on a flight back home shortly.

That's that from the yap centre.

That's it! Spain are out of the World Cup. The 2010 chapions have been knocked out. Akinfeev knees Aspas' penalty away and they will dance in disbelief for the rest of this night.

This was not meant to happen. Spain are out. Argentina, Portugal and Spain are all knocked out. What is this World Cup?!
Aspas will take it. If Spain miss this, they're out.
He goes right down the middle and De Gea goes the wrong way.

First to take for Spain is Iniesta!
The coin has been flipped. Sergio Ramos wins the coin toss for Spain and they will go first.

Russia have never been in a World Cup penalty shootout in their history. Spain have been here thrice. Can La Furia Roja get the better of the hosts? We'll know in about 5 minutes or so.

120' Rodrigo has a chance to go at goal from the edge of the area but his shot is stopped easily by Akinfeev. That ought to be it.
120' 1 minute added on.
119' 1 more minute. Jordi Alba has the ball on the left flank and he tries to play a quick give and go with Iniesta but Manuel Fernandes mirrors him and lets the ball run out for a goalkick.
118' Isco has been trying all day but you can't say that of the rest of this Spain team I'm afraid. But his attempt to dart into the box from the left flank is scotched.
117' It's whipped in and gets a flick on at the near post but it runs away from everyone but Golovin tracks it down and retrieves it. But his cross is poor and Spain clear their lines.
116' Golovin will take it.
116' Russia win a corner!
115' Spain relinquish possession inside their own box but Golovin's horrendous cutback ruins what could have been Russia's moment of the game.
115' It's pouring here at the Luzhniki stadium. Penalty shootout incoming. Tough, tough conditions.
114' No penalty for Spain. Bugger off says the VAR team. COME ON RUSSIA!
114' Pique might have been getting manhandled. VAR! VAR! VAR!
113' Koke takes it and nobody gets a nod on it. And the Spaniards race out of the box. They seem to be appealing for something.
112' Isco gets shoulder tackled to the ground near the left flank and Spain have a freekick.
111' Erokhin brings down Isco on the left side. They take the freekick short and Isco gallops to the left side edge of the box and scoops it in but Russia see it clear.
111' Iniesta plays a lovely little ball into the path of Aspas who is surging into the box but he can't take it in his stride and that chance is foiled.
109' Rodrigo dummies and ghosts Granat and then does a stepover to put Ignashevich off balance but his shot across goal is parried away by Akinfeev. Aspas tries to send it back home but it's blocked in due time. What a run that was by Rodrigo.
107' Carvajal picks out Akinfeev at the post with pin-point precision.
106' Iniesta earns himself a yard with a drop of his shoulder but his shot is blocked by Golovin and it falls kindly for Akinfeev.
106' This game has been like a redundant book. More and more of the same on every page.
PEEEEEEP! And we're into the second half of extra time.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! First half of extra time is over. And the lullaby is still going on. How many of you are still up?

As it stands, Spain 1-1 Russia.
105' Koke floats it into the area and Pique heads it towards the far post but it doesn't have enough pace and Akinfeev gathers it rather easily.
104' Golovin wins the ball from Isco but he gets penalized for it. It could be that the ref decided that he wasn't in control of the challenge. He went studs up. Anyway, Spain have a freekick.
103' Spain also use their 4th substitution.

Asensio off. Rodrigo on.
102' Spain have gone beyond 1000 passes in this game. Trust me, it was never anywhere close to being as captivating as that sounds.
101' Aspas has the chance to run at the Russian defenders but Ignashevich holds fort and thwacks the ball clear after putting his body on the line to block the forward's shot.
99' Aspas feeds Asensio, right outside the area and the youngster tries to leather it into the net but ends up hitting serving it on a plate to Akinfeev who gobbles it up.
98' Isco and Iniesta play a quick one-two but Isco cannot get past Ignashevich inside the area and the Russia defender mirrors him and lets the ball go out for a goalkick.
96' Historic 4th substitution of the game for Russia.

Kuzyaev off. Erokhin on.
95' A few deft passes around the edge of the area help release Asensio on the left flank but he is tracked down before he can ping the ball into the area. It eventually falls to Iniesta who goes for glory from 35 yards out and telegraphs it into the stands.
94' Iago Aspas drifts into the box after dragging Kutepov away but his cut back lacks any sense of direction and Russia clear the danger yet again.
94' Asensio spreads the ball out wide for Isco. He drives in from near the corner flag but his cross is thumped clear by Ignashevich.
92'  Bro, discussing vegan cuisine with your grandma on a Sunday afternoon got to give you more kicks than this game.
91' Isco feeds Carvajal on the left side of the box (you heard that right) and the latter cuts it back for Aspas but Ignashevic and co have it covered and thwart yet another Spain attack.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And we're off in the first half of extra time.
94' PEEEEEEEEEEEEP! The misery does not end. We have 30 more minutes of 'action' coming up.

As it stands, Spain 1-1 Russia.
94' Last chance of regulation time for Spain. And there is absolutely no urgency on show here.
92' Cheryshev has the opportunity to cut the ball back after being released down the right side of the box but his cut back is tame and finds Iniesta who tries to clear the danger. But Russia pounce on it once again and Cheryshev cuts in from the left side and tries to bang one into the far post but he sends it sailing to the stands.
91' Russia are trying to take the game to the Spaniards. They have a throw-in on the left flank. But it's a poor throw and Smolov fails to gather it and has to see it go out for a goalkick.
90' 4 minutes added on.
89' Isco swings it in and Ramos rises to meet it but it's a rather tame header and floats over the crossbar.
89' It's served in by Isco and flicked on by Iniesta but Kutepov once again clears it out for a corner.
88' Koke's corner is floated in and Pique's header takes a deflection of Kutepov and goes out for yet another corner. Isco will take it.
88' Isco's delivery is deflected out for a corner. Koke will take this one.
88' Spain win a freekick near the left flank after Cheryshev's failed attempt to force Asensio into a cuddle from behind. Isco and Asensio are standing by it.
86' Spain relinquish possession in the centre of the park and Russia break on the counter. Alba slips and falls down in his own box but Smolov is penalized for that! That didn't look like a wise decision from the ref.

Iniesta goes for goal from the edge of the area and Akinfeev gets down just in time to parry it away but Aspas is there to follow-up. However, the striker's attempt to go across goal is palmed away and out of danger by the Russian goalkeeper once again.
83' Spain have had 74% percent possession and have completed 711 passes as opposed to Russia's 164' Despite all that, they have only managed to get 3 shots away.
83' Koke whips one into the box from the right flank but nobody's there to nod it in.
82' They recycle the ball from the back. Bad case of deja vu all day. That's what this match has been.
81' Asensio whips it in and nobody really catches wind of what's going on and Russia clear it eventually and Spain have a throw-in on the right flank.
81' Kutepov slides in to intercept Isco's threaded pass into the box in search of Aspas. Spain have a corner.
80' Carvajal tries to whip it in from the right flank but instead hits it directly at Akinfeev.
Substitution for Spain.

Diego Costa off. Iago Aspas on.
77' Russia have parked the bus and Spain are yet to realize that they're not sporting their training kits. Fly a banner, someone.
75' Let's just hope that Spain will score a goal in the next 15 minutes and spare us from having to put with this for another 30 minutes.
74' If this match goes into stoppage time, do we get paid to watch?
73' Asensio whips it in and Ramos misses it at the near post and it is subsequently cleared.
72' Ignashevich's poor clearance results in a Spanish corner. Asensio will take it.
70' Jordi Alba absorbs a tackle from behind by Zobnin and he gets a yellow card for that.
69' Kudryashov drags Isco to the ground and Spain have a freekick at the centre of the park. And Spain make another change.

Carvajal on for Nacho.
68' Sigh. Spain have the ball and guess what's happening.
66' Substitution for Spain.

Andres Iniesta on. David Silva off.

Now we're talking.
65' Russia break on the counter. Fernandes plays a lovely one-two with Golovin and the latter breaks into the box but Ramos has it covered and Golovin steps, allowing the ball to roll out for a goalkick.
64' Meanwhile, Don Andres is getting ready to come on.
64' Substitution for Russia.

Goalscorer Dzyuba is off and Smolov replaces him.
62' Russia steal the ball from Isco and Kuzyaev slides the ball across to Fernandes on the right wing who's tackled to the deck by Ramos. Russia have a freekick near the centre of the park. It is pumped forward optimistically but it comes to nothing.
60' Substitution for Russia.

Samedov off. Cheryshev on.
59' Nacho whips an early ball in and Silva flicks it on but there's nobody at the far post and it rolls out for a goalkick.
59' Spain taking their sweet time getting the ball forward once again.
57' Isco plays a delightful ball to the left side of the box and Costa retrieves it before cutting it back for Isco. However, Isco's first touch takes him away from goal and will have to content with a corner. Corner comes to nothing though.
67' In by Samedov, out by Costa. They whip it in again but Fernandes can't get a proper contact on it and Spain clear the danger again and win a freekick in their defensive third.
56' Russia enjoy some time on the ball and Samedov puts Ramos under pressure on the left flank and wins a corner.
55' Ramos plays a wayward diagonal to... a ghost perhaps?
54' Spain have a pass completion percentage of 90. But they make you wish they weren't such good passers of the ball.
53' Asensio takes the freekick from the left flank. Samedov heads it clear and the danger is quelled.
52' Asensio drops a shoulder, finds space and whips it into the area but Kudryashov heads it out of danger. However, Spain are back in possession. Isco tries to dance past Kutepov but he trips him and earns a yellow card.
51' Isco releases Nacho on the right flank with a dinked ball but the latter's cross into the box is headed clear by Kutepov.
50' Koke floats it in and Costa meets it but his header is wayward and is off target.
49' Nacho and Asensio are felled on the right flank one after the other and Golovin's tackle on Nacho which was the first and the significant offence is penalized and Spain have a freekick. Koke will deliver.
47' Russia have yet another opportunity as Mario Fernandes whips in a cross from the right flank but Koke heads it clear.
46' Isco swivels past a couple of Russian defenders before floating it wide for Nacho. Nacho floats it in and it goes beyond Costa and falls awkwardly for Alba who tries to turn it towards home with his lower abs. Quite audacious but hideous that. Comes to nothing.
46' Despite all the possession Spain had, they took merely 4 touches in Russia's box. You catch my drift?
45' Ramos' poor clearance is intercepted and Russia have a chance in the final third but they are forced to drift out wide and Spain squeeze the ball out of their hands.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And we're off in the second half.
The second half is about to start and Russia are making a change.

Zhirkov off. Granat on.

We have no idea where this is going but I hope Russia kick Spain's screws into the middle of next week if they keep up their midfield exhibition of mind-numbing mindless passing.

As it stands, Spain 1-1 Russia.
45+2' Isco crosses in from the left flank and Costa gets his head on it. But Akinfeev gathers it without any trouble.
45+1' Nacho plays a lovely threaded ball for Diego Costa but Akinfeev rushes out to get a touch on Costa's shot which takes it away from the far post where Isco was waiting.
45' 2 minutes of stoppage time.
44' Isco cuts in from the left flank and tries to curl it in but Russia block it and quell the danger.
43' Samedov mows down Alba on the left flank and concedes a freekick in midfield. The place where boredom thrives as far as Spain are concerned.
42' Koke finds Alba near the left flank and the latter receives it and tries to send it into the box. But Russia block his effort and scuppers that attack.
40' Dzyuba scores! Sends De Gea the wrong way and thumps it into the right bottom corner and the Luzhniki Stadium has absolutely erupted.

He gets a yellow card too.
The corner is floated in by Samedov and goes over Pique who raised to reach it with his hands stretched out wide. The ball clips his right hand.
38' Fernandes keeps in a Kuzyaev diagonal near the corner flag and crosses it in but Pique intervenes to send it out for a corner.
36' Diego Costa fouls Kutepov. Potateos are potating, so why the heck not, eh?
35' Spain are toying with the Russians in midfield. And it's not even the intimidating kind of toying either. But the Russians break and put the Spanish defence in a precarious position. Golovin is eventually found in space on the edge of the area. He drops his shoulder and tries to curl it around De Gea but he ends up shooting it a fair bit wide of De Gea's far post.
33' Isco gives us a flash of his brilliance, David Silva plays an incisive passes that sends the Russian defence falling to the ground like the earth beneath their feet gave in, Costa pounces on...

I wish I could tell you all these things. But Isco is pinging the ball to Silva. Silva's pinging it back. And so on and so forth.
31' Remember the Spain you used to hate? The Spain that goes in front and then bores you to sleep? Well, surprise, homies, they're back. Tune in to your TV sets to catch a glimpse.
29' This ain't even pay-per-view worthy, lads. Russia have a throw-in near the right corner flag.
27' They take it short and Samedov and Golovin try to pull off something daft on the right flank but Alba queers the Golovin's pitch and foil that attack.
26' Busquets concedes a corner in an attempt to stop a cross from the right flank. Zhirkov will take it.
24' Jordi Alba plugs away and wins the ball in the final third and Isco has a chance to play the wingback into the box but his pass has too much behind it and Russia get a goalkick.
23' Russia have a freekick, 35 yards from goal. Samedov floats it in but Pique heads it clear. Russia can't conjure anything on the follow-up. Eventually, Isco is fouled as he tries to bring the ball out of traffic and Spain have a freekick.
21' After seeing how these last 5 minutes have panned out, I hope this is not going to be one of those games where Spain bores the juices out of you with their passing.
19' Dzyuba drfiting out wide on the right flank to get a touch of the ball but Spain wrestle it back and try to work something from the back.
17' Alba floats one out into the final third and Isco brings it down like a kid collecting feathers falling from the sky. But unfortunately for him the Russian defenders are quick to spot the danger and clear it.
15' Golovin finds Zhirkov on the left flank but Nacho presses him into running the ball out of play and Spain have a goalkick.
13' Samedov plays a lovely backheel to play in Fernandes on the right flank but Pique intervenes to concede a throw-in. They work the throw-in and send the ball to the centre where Zobnin is waiting. The midfielder goes for goal from outside the area and finds the stands instead.

It's an own goal. Ignashevic was spearing Ramos to the ground at the far post but it clips his heels and goes straight into the corner. A touch of good fortune and Spain are on their way!
10' Isco spreads it out wide to the right wing for Nacho and Zhirkov comes crashing into him in a deplorable manner and Nacho has his genesack messed with. Man down. I repeat, man down.

Spain have a freekick on the right flank on the right side of the box. Asensio will take it.
8' Isco looks keen on distributing the ball and getting involved in the centre and has been drifting deep to dictate the tempo of the play so far.
7' Silva is dispossessed in the centre of the park but Zobnin is robbed before he could play in Samedov.
5' Ramos plays a lovely diagonal ball and picks out Isco on the right flank. A few light passes later, Isco crosses it in but Ignashevic heads it clear. Some pinball activity later, the danger dies down.
4' It's drifted in by Samedov and it has too much on it and causes no real concern inside the Spanish box.
3' Isco and Silva try to string a couple of quick passes but Jordi Alba isn't alive to it on the flanks and Russia have a throw-in in their defensive third. They take it and Golovin takes off down the right flank and invites Pique to get a block in. They win a corner.
2' Spain are passing the ball around, taking their time with it. Russia are sitting deep and plaing sponge. Jordi Alba tries to dance into the box but Mario Fernandes stops him and clears the ball.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Diego Costa rolls the ball from the centre and we're off. Spain will attack from left to right on the TV screen.
Spain are in their storied red kit and the Russians are dressed in holy whites.
Did I tell you Peter Drury is on the mic?

And y'all have to put up with me. I feel for you.
The teams are out in the centre and the national anthems are being rung out.

The knockout stage of the World Cup couldn't have got off to a better start and we had 2 stem winding matchups but at the end of the day, Argentina and Portugal caught their flights home.

Spain vs Russia: Team News

Spain have no reported injuries and will have a fully fit squad at their disposal. Sergio Busquets being on a yellow card might tempt Hierro to change up things in football. Busquets is far too important a player for this team but if at all he is rested, Thiago Alcantara could start.

Aleksandar Golovin and Mario Fernandes, who were rested in Russia's previous match against Uruguay are set to return. Igor Smolnikov will miss out after picking up a red card in that game. Meanwhile, Alexander Dzagoev, who picked up a back injury in the first game could come back and give Russia a major boost.

Spain vs Russia: Probable lineups

Spain: David De Gea, Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Thiago Alcantara, Andres Iniesta, Isco, David Silva, Diego Costa

Russia: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov, Gazinksky, Zobnin, Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev, Dzyuba

Spain vs Russia: Form guide

Spain: D-W-D-W-D

Spain haven't really performed at the level expected of them. They have shown signs of brilliance but they have struggled to break down dogged defences in the recent past and this could prove to be an impediment of sorts against Russia.

Russia: L-D-W-W-L

Russia have impressed in the World Cup but their performance against Uruguay left a lot to be desired. They'll need to be at their very best to pull an upset over the Spain team that is replete with world-class players.

Spain vs Russia: Key Players

As for Spain, Diego Costa could very well be the difference maker. He is of a different breed compared to the rest of the team. His belligerent nature and relentlessness can help turn games around and he has made a habit of doing just that.

Aleksandr Golovin will take the field tomorrow as the most prolific assist maker of this World Cup and if he can kick on in the same vein that brought him to this, he could leave a telling impact on the game.
