0 - 2
30' H. Maguire
58' D. Alli
very professional display from England who at times looked troubled but were always confident after scoring the opening goal. A semi-final clash with Russia or Croatia awaits! Is football coming home? They are two games away from bringing it home!

This is Amit Mishra signing off! Hope you enjoyed the game and the coverage, fellas! Go easy on the beer if you are an England fan! Do enjoy the coverage of the Croatia vs Russia game with Anirudh Menon next! Ciao!
Peeeeeeeeeep, peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! FULL TIME! ENGLAND ARE IN THE SEMI-FINALS!
90+4' Yellow card shown to Larsson for a foul on Kane. Freekick to England near the Sweden box, something they are not too keen on whipping into the box. Yes, they play it short...
90+3' A long ball from England and then Sweden do the same. This is easy. A blogger's dream in injury time...
90+2' Nothing except a few cagey English passes and the ref's whistle for a freekick...
90+1' Substitution for England

Rashford is ON
Sterling is OFF
5 minutes to be added on...
90' Augustinsson! WAY OVER! Pfft. So much promise, so little return.
90' Larsson and Augustinsson on the deadball...
90' Freekick to Sweden in a dangerous position. A goal now and it'll make things nervy in injury time!
89' Sterling makes a good run on the left showing his god burst of pace. His cross in the end is deflected but falls for Delph. The midfielder takes a look at Sterling, who does the same, and they watch the ball go out of play for a goalkick!
87' Maguire is booked for a little bit of afters with Guidetti. A bit needless that, but that's his first yellow of the World Cup and he won't be missing a potential tussle with Dzyuba. A scary prospect if Phil Jones is up against the man-mountain!
86' Freekick for England in a promising position. They are still pushing a few men forward here. Trippier on the deadball...
85' Substitution for Sweden

Krafth is OFF
Jansson is ON
84' Substitution for England

Henderson is OFF
Dier is ON
83' Augustinsson fouls Tripper on the left and England win a freekick in a dangerous position...
82' Lingard with another piercing run down the middle but his short in the end is blocked and the Swedes get the ball away...
80' A lot of crosses from the Swedes in this game, something they themselves were up against the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Mexico. England are right now the team who have too much quality for the men in yellow. The dream run is coming to an end.
79' Krafth is down and is gingerly walking to the sideline after receiving a bit of treatment. Rashford is warming up for England, meanwhile...
78' Driving run from Krafth who drifted to the centre to push the English defence backwards. His pass to Augustinsson is pretty good but Walker is there to get the block from the subsequent Augustinsson cross.
77' Trippier with a stunning cross from the right again after a good pass from Henderson to evade the Swedish midfield press. Sterling was there to tap it in, but Granqvist is there to put the foot in and get it away...
76' Substitution for England

Dele Alli is OFF
Fabian Delph is ON
75' We have 15 more minutes left and if Sweden could pull one back, that young English defence could be in for a nervy afternoon! They have kept the ball really well though.
74' Sweden have a couple of players on the floor but the game goes on. The ref finally decides to stop play...
73' UFF! Jesse Lingard! ot sure if Jesse or Messi! Sweet little slalom run before a delicate chop to get away from Larsson. His pass for Sterling in the end is just a bit overhit though and the Swedes get away with it!
71' ANOTHER TOP SAVE FROM PICKFORD! Good cross from Olsson to find Berg in the box and his first touch was brilliant. He turns and smashes it. It was heading into the roof of the net but Pickford manages to get his fingers to it and it's out for a corner!
69' Again, a solid delivery from Trippier and the Swedish defence just about manage to get it away. They are trapped in their own half though as England have kept the heat on!
68' Dele Alli with a shot from the edge of the box that is blocked by the man-mountain Granqvist. England immediately pick the second ball and win a corner!
67' DECENT CHANCE FOR MAGUIRE! But he smashes it into row-z. A very scrappy corner as Sweden failed to deal with the knockdown. It ricochet's off Kane for Henderson to head it to Maguire at the far post, but his shot was rash and way over the bar!
66' Good holdup play from Sterling to win a corner! For a little guy, he has incredibly good balance and showed his upper body strenght!
65' Substitution for Sweden

Toivonen is OFF
Guidetti is ON
Forsberg is OFF
Olsson is ON
64' Sweden again break forward but Forsberg's attempted through pass to Berg is cut out by Maguire. He sends them on the break...
62' WHAT A SAVE FROM PICKFORD! That was beautiful football from Sweden who a moment ago, looked clueless according to yours truly. Claesson and Berg combine well in the box and the former's shot had a lot of sting in it but Pickford denies him with a stunning save from close range! What a move, what a save!
61' England with still all the possession as Sweden look distraght and don't know how to react...
Simple, simple football from England and they double it! From the corner. Lingard finds space at the edge of the box and his deft cross into the far post is headed in with authority by Dele Alli! Right, can Sweden mount a comeback from here?
57' Trippier's cross is again brilliant and the Swedes just about get it away for a throw in! England with the pressing...
56' England with all the probing now as Kane is dropping deep to pick out the wingers. Sterling makes a good run but Kane's cross isn't good enough. Lingrad picks up the loose ball and shoots for a deflection! Corner!
55' Sterling is doing really well with his movement around the Sweden penalty box. If only his finishing was as good as his runs and combination play!
54' Good, deep cross from Young and Maguire does well to win the header. His looping header is skied, for a PASS, by Sterling but Walker decides to pass it straight to Granqvist instead of smashing it from a good angle at the edge of the box.
53' Kane wins a freekick in the Sweden half. They try to take it early but the ref pulls it back.
51' Freekick to the Swedes in their own half. They play it short and Forsberg creeps up on the left before trying to catch Pickford off guard, but it's just over the bar!
50' A good one-two between Berg and Forsberg to get away from the England midfield but Walker is there to track back and make the tackle on Forsberg. Good defending that!
49' A spell of possession for England now as they try to calm things a bit in midfield like they did after the opening goal. Keep the ball, fellas!
48' Sweden have started really brightly but it will provide England the chances on the break. A more enterprising game this, now...
47' BERG WITH THE HEADER! Good save from Pickford! Augustinsson with a good delivery on the left and Berg climbed over Young to test Pickford! England win the second ball and manage to keep the ball...
46' Good start from the Swedes who immediately press and win the ball before Claesson crosses one into the far post. Maguire away! Sweden win the throw in!
Peeeeeeeeeeeep! England re-start proceedings, shooting from left to right!
The teams are out and the second half is moments away!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Half time! England lead 1-0 but they should have scored at least a couple of more goals! Still a lot of work to do. Sweden will come back stronger in the second half...

Second half in a few, fellas!
45+1' Sweden get the corner away and that's that!
45' STERLING WITH ANOTHER CHANCE! AND AGAIN HE BOTTLES IT! Wonderful pass by Henderson this time to pierce the Swedish defence and Sterling manages to stay onside. He rounds the keeper but Olsen manages to get a touch and Sterling still had the time to pick out Kane with a simple layoff. But he decides to go for glory and misses it! Corner!
44' Sterling with a good chance to double it! He is one vs one against Olsen but bottles it in the end. The linesman's flag is up luckily! Jeez, that was a horrendous miss.
43' Trippier with a beautifully lifted through pass for Sterling but the Man City attacker just doesn't react in time!
42' Another cross by the Swedes from the left and Pickford comes out to safely collect it again. As I say that, the English fans chant the anthem!
41' A little bit of trivia, fellas: England have scored 10 goals at the 2018 World Cup with the Mauire goal. It's just the second time they have reached double figures at a tournament (11 in 1966)!
40' Okay, I was wrong. The goal hasn't changed things at all. Still a very cagey game. England don't have to attack now, which perhaps makes it worse. Sweden are trying but just don't have the quality to get in behind the well-drilled Englishd defence...
38' Sweden finally get a decent move going with Claesson on the right but his cross into the box is too long for Berg and England win a freekick...
37' Safely way by the English defence who themselves are well-drilled in set-piece situations. You can't out-England England!
36' Sweden aren't playing like they've just gone behind. Still very laboured and direct as they win a freekick on the left and send the big guys forward...
35' England again with all the possession before Trippier tries to curl one in. Sterling was there to meet it but it's cleared by the man-mountain Granqvist.
33' Possession for the English before they play it to Pickford and his launch up field is out for a throw in...
32' We could see a bit more of Swedish passing now, though I have to admit, I haven't really seen them do much of it barring the game against Mexico. England with their tails up now...
It was just wrong to get Forsberg to mark Maguire in a set-piece situation. Maguire easily gets past the number 10 and connects perfectly to beat Olsen from close range! England lead! Jeez, we have a goal. That could open the game up now...
31' GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL! Maguire scores with a header from the corner! WE HAVE A GOAL! A GOAL!
30' First CORNER of the game as Trippier's cross is cleared by Granqvist. Alright, yaay! Make something out of it, the English attackers!
29' Lingard this time curls one in into the backpost and Lingard does well to win the header, but the Swedes are there to win the second ball...
28' Aother good spell of passing from the English but that final pas is just not there as Henderson's attempted cross into the backpost is cleared by Granqvist...
26' Jan Andersson must be thrilled on the sideline. He doesn't really care about the style, does he? If it's 0-0 and they have a chance to progress to the semis, that'll do.
25' Berg thought he was in business after a beautiful pass from Claesson on the right, but the linesman's flag is up. Looked onside after replays that. Possible one vs one chance gone...
24' Trippier now makes a good run on the right and is picked out well by Lingard. He tries to cross it first time and it takes a deflection off Augustinsson and is safely collected by Olsen...
22' Nicely done by the English who take a few seconds and keep possession of the ball. Sterling has time on the ball, but there's no one to pick out in the box with only yellow shirts visible...
21' That was perhaps the best minute of football we've had so far. Sweden immediately tried to get a move going on the right but Krafth's cross is intercepted by Stones. Stones then releases Henderson but the Liverpool midfielder plays it sideways and Sweden get enough men back to make it wall again. Jeez almighty!
20' Good delivery from Young on the left after a stepover or two, but it's too close to the keeper and the English attackers just can't get to it. Sweden get away with it...
19' KANE WITH A SHOT! WIDE! That was a good driving run from Sterling down the middle before he delicately shifted it to the left. Kane took the ball over and tried to arrow one in, but it's wide!
18' Walker tries the old route one pass but it goes horribly wrong as it's straight at Olsen, from one end of the pitch to the other.
17' A few headed passes in the midfield. I'm fairly good at pingpong, but let's keep that to the table, boys. Not on the pitch. Bring on some quality!
16' Throw in to the Swedes in their own half. Boy are they going to juice the seconds when then get freekicks or throw ins...
15' Pfft...everything you didn't want this game to be. Dull and absolutely no quality in the attacking half of either team...
14' England knock it around well near the Swedish penalty box as Young exchanges passes Alli on the left. His cross into the box is pretty easily cleared by Granqvist in the end though. Never going to score that way, the English...
13' Claesson finds space at the edge of the box and tries to unlease one...Way over! Well, why not try your luck?
12' Safely away by the English defence as Krafth's cross goes out for a throw in. Possession again for the Swedes...
11' Another freekick to Sweden near the half way line and boy, they're sending those tall defenders forward again, Forsberg though takes it short...
10' Good little pass from Henderson to find Sterling on the left but the Swedes get it away for a throw in. England do well to keep the heat on at the edge of the box but Trippier's cross is safely collected by the Swedish keeper...
9' Long ball after long ball from the Swedes as Maguire this time gets it away. Alli picks it up but his square pass to find Young is woeful...
8' England get away with it with some scrappy defending and the blow of the ref's whistle...nothing pretty about this game so far, lads and lasses...
7' Freekick to Sweden and they are immediately lining up a barrage of men in the opposition penalty box. The delivery is cleared for a throw in. A long one coming in from Claesson...
6' Dele Alli does well to dispossess Krafth on the left and he sees an opening to pass it to Kane. But the through ball is just a tad overhit and the keeper comes out to smother the chance...
5' Surprised the team in red haven't tried a single long pass. Maybe cause they know of the mean Swedish defence who have plenty of height...
4' And they overplay it in the final third as Sweden win the ball. Sweden do what everyone expects them to but the long pass is again overhit and England get a throw in...
3' England are passing it around in midfield before Sweden push them back. None of that direct football by the English so far as they are trying to keep it on the deck...
2' A spell of passing at the back for England now before Walker tries a crossfield pass but it's blocked by Berg. England pick up the second ball but Sweden apply the press and win it back immediately. Claesson's run on the right was a good one but the pass by Larsson was overhit and England breathe easy...
1' Straight away, Sweden hoof it up top but the English defence gets it away. England pick it up and get a feel of the ball in midfield...
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Kickoff! Sweden get us started, shooting from left to right in their Yellow kit and England are in their Red kit! Let's go!
The word we're looking at today is Packing stats. Supposedly a new stat coming up in Germany that focusses on how many players are bypassed with a single pass. Expect Sweden to do a lot of the long ball passing to evade the English midfield press...
The pre match pleasantries are done and kickoff is moments away!
Sweden vs England - A word on the lineups

No real surprises there as the two teams have named a pretty solid lineup. England have gone with the tried and tested, though I would have liked to see Dier replacing Walker at the back because of the aerial threat Sweden will provide in set-pieces and while lumping the ball forward. Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane will have a big job up top as Kane will be reponsible for holding it up while the likes of Sterling and Dele Alli will need to get on the second ball to trouble the Swedish defence.

Sweden have named a couple of changes; Larsson comng in for Svensson and Krafth replacing the suspended Lustig. Larsson is there perhaps because his ability to pick a pass will help the team get out of trouble and break forward. Berg and Toivonen are two giants up top and if they can get at the end of those long balls, England could be in a few hairy situations.

This is Amit Mishra, and I'll be your host for the game. If you're an English fan, then It's coming home. If you're a Swedish fan, then it's coming to Stockholm!

The lineups hint that we could be in for a long boring game, but let's keep out fingers cross and hope for a blockbuster or thriller or whatever the word that comes to your mind.

Sweden vs England - Team News

The Sweden fans will still be pinching themselves after what has been a remarkable journey to the quarterfinals. Manager Janne Andersson’s tactics have worked perfectly so far and though it might be boring, a quarterfinal place more than makes up for it. Sweden will be without one regular first team starter as Mikael Lustig is suspended for the game having picked up a couple of bookings.

In Lustig’s absence, we could see Bologna right-back Emil Krafth who did get a few minutes of action against Switzerland in the last outing. Barring that, Andersson has more or less a fully fit squad to choose from though there might be some tired legs in that camp.

Unlike Sweden, England manager Gareth Southgate had the chance to rest some of the first team regulars against Belgium, a game they lost narrowly. However, the 120 minutes against Colombia will have taken a lot out of the players and they’ll need to be at their physical best against the Swedes.

Quite a few players suffered from cramps – notably Kyle Walker and Ashley young -- but are they are available for the game against Sweden. Jamie Vardy is a minor doubt having missed training due to a groin injury. We could see on change at the back with Dier coming in for Walker considering the threat Sweden have up top with two towering centre-forwards.

Sweden vs England - Key Players

Harry Kane obviously is someone England will heavily rely on once again. Against a physical Colombia side, Kane not only held the ball up well, but also often dropped deep to help his side keep possession.

If you didn’t watch the game, you’d be surprised how well he actually passed it around in midfield, achieving more than former stalwarts Lampard and Gerrard in a World Cup game at times!

Kane will be up against the Swedish duo of Granqvist and Lindelof. The two have been pretty solid, protected well by the workaholic midfield of course.

Kane will have his work cut out against a defence that kept the likes of Ciro Immobile, Bast Dost, Timo Werner and Thomas Muller quiet on their road to the Samara Arena.

In an attacking sense, Sweden have basically exploited teams on the break. Emil Forsberg’s deflected strike gave them the win over the Swiss and he’ll be the creative outlet of the team. Not only can he pick a pass from deep, but the Leipzig man can be a handful on the transition owing to his long strides and neat dribbling.

Sweden vs England - Probable Lineups

Sweden probable XI (4-4-2): Olsen; Augustinsson, Granqvist, Lindelof, Krafth; Svensson, Ekdal, Forsberg, Claesson; Toivonen, Berg

England probable XI (3-5-2): Pickford; Maguire, Dier, Stones; Young, Dele, Lingard, Henderson, Trippier; Sterling, Kane
