PEEP! PEEP! FULLTIME!

Villarreal 1 - 1 Barcelona

The Yellow Submarine almost pulled off a magnificent textbook display of counter-attacking football, but Leo Messi and that wand he calls a left foot had other ideas. No shame in losing two points to that.

Real Madrid pull further away though - they are 5 ahead, with a game in hand - and Barcelona continue to remain marooned on 3rd... now a point below Sevilla.

It was a lovely game to cover, and it was my pleasure to do so. Thanks for reading!

Anirudh Menon signing out.. have a great week ahead

Toodle-ooo!
...
94' Costa gets penalised again for bringing down Messi in full flight - that's his second yellow and off he goes. Villarreal are not happy, 'cos they thought that dos Santos had been fouled just a second earlier. Barca pump the ball in from the foul, but nothing doing
...
93' (off 4 minutes added on) Barca are still patiently probing and passing. Neymar goes the more direct route and takes on everyone before giving it to Iniesta, who played in Denis Suarez. The latter put it into the box, and that's the ball safely ensconced in the hands of Asenjo
...
91' The yellow submarine counters for umpteenth time, and Villarreal win a corner! There are shouts for handball of Pique but the ref really doesn't like giving those - Barca counter but Costa does well to win it back.
...
Can we call it Messi territory now? It hammered-curled into the top right corner of Asenjo's goal! Unstoppable
...
90' GGGGGOOOOAAALL!! MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!! UFF!!
...
89' UFF MESSI! Lovely, quick, feet from the little genius has Villarreal scrambling around before Bruno takes him down just outsde the box - in what is commonly known as Beckham territory.
...
89' Sansone gets the call caught in between his own legs and can't make the most of yet another Villarreal counter! Oh, if only he had got that on his right foot!
...
88' Oh my Iniesta. The little magician curled/dinked a lovely little ball behind the Villarreal barricade, but Sergi Roberto was too slow on his heels to get to it. What a ball, though
...
86' He's replaced by Álvaro González. Meanwhile, Roberto Soriano had already been subbed out for Rodri Hernández
...
83' Barca are going Pulis style route one now - as Iniesta pumps a long one aimed at Suarez. Ruiz and Asenjo almost make a meal off it. but the men in yellow converge to clear the danger. Mussachio injured himself in the process as he fell awkwardly on his wrist. OUCH
...
82' Neymar tries to outwit Mario down the left and does so in his third attempt in as many seconds. He does magnificently to put it on a platter to Arda Turan - whose header from seven yards out is ludicrously wide. HOW DID HE MISS THAT?
...
81' Barca pass and probe and pass and probe, but that packed mass of yellow is in no mood to budge. Neymar gets fed up and lifts it into the box, but Asenjo collects it easily. Gerard Pique then proceeds to talk himself into the book after complaining of time wasting
...
80' It comes to absolutely nothing as Soriano does well to get his body between Neymar and the ball, and win the foul. A brief period of rest for the beleaguered Villarreal defence
...
79' Villarreal play a couple of deft passes before dos Santos tries to pick out Sansone with a long ball, that Ter Stegen does well to collect. Barca come back and win a corner.
...
77' MASSIVE CONTROVERSY YET AGAIN! Bruno and Messi clash in the box, and the former falls on to the ball - with his hand. The ref waves Barca's ferocious penalty appeals, and Sergi Roberto gets a yellow for complaining a touch too vociferously
...
76' Samu Castillejo comes on for the excellent Alexandre Pato. Villarreal's counters will be even more pacy now
...
75' It's ignored by the ref, and Barca break at extreme pace. the ball is worked out to Suarez, and he forces a brilliant save out of Asenjo!! BTW, that Mascherano thing - Handball 100% that was a penalty all day long!
...
73' WOW! What a shot from Leo Messi as he works out space from nothing - and it clangs off THE INSIDE OF THE POST!!! The ball breaks forward and Pato and Sansone go up in unison as they seek a handball off Mascherano
...
72' OH! CONTROVERSY! Bruno Soriano failed to cut out a ball into the box, and he falls onto the ground - sprawled there, he tried to push it away with his hands, but luckily for him he didn't reach it! Messi proceeded to hammer it out but somehow wins a corner for Barca
...
71' Neymar dinks it over to Suarez, who goes down in the box under pressure from Mussachio - he doesn't appeal though.
...
70' It was driven in low, and Mascherano stooped low to head it at goal, but it flew high. Meanwhile Arda Turan is on fro the impressive Lucas Digne - this means a back three and a very lopsided formation for Barca.
...
70' No he can't.
...
69' Costa gets a deserved yellow for tugging back Luis Suarez as he ran through into space down the right flank. Can Messi make him pay with a decent delivery into the box?
...
68' SUBSTITUTION - Denis Suarez ON for Andre Gomes. Andres Iniesta has an unusually rash shot from outside that dribbles well wide. That's the first time I've ever seen the great man look inelegant on a football pitch. Worrying sight, that.
...
67' Messi gets in behind the defence, but his ball into the box is cut out well by Mussachio. Villarreal immediately counter and it takes an excellent covering tackle from Mascherano to stop Pato from running through on goal. Neymar comes back at Villarreal almost immediately, but he is crowded out. BREATHLESS stuff this!
...
66' Brilliant from Pique, a last ditch challenge from Pique stops Sansone from breaking in one-on-one against Ter Stegen
...
65' Pato is running his socks off here, and you cannot help but be glad at his renaissance at the wonderful little club that is Villarreal. Messi meanwhile picks out Roberto with a peach of a long ball, but the right-back's first touch cannot match the pass.
...
64'  Neymar goes down in the penalty box, but the ref asks him to get up and get on with it. And rightly so - why this talented young lad has to resort to such dirty tactics, I will never understand!

...
63' Messi is not one to be cowed though - he brushes past Manu, but Bruno holds strong and muscles the Argentine away from goal - and wins Villareal a throw in! The home crowd certainly loved that!
...
62' Messi is being shackled by all 10 of Villarreal's outfield players putting in a shift - as they would say - Bruno and Manu are charging down shots with a reckless bravery that would make Vidic and Terry proud.
...
60' Neymar and Messi are trying all their tricks but the Yellow submarine is sealed tight - for the moment. Barca meanwhile continue to pile on the pressure
...
58' Neymar chipped a lovely little ball into the far post where Gomes almost slipped around Costa and onto the ball, but Costa does well to chest it down to Asenjo... and the goalkeeper gathers without fumbling! Phew!
...
56' Another counter!! Sansone runs at Mascherano before misplacing his pass to Soriano. The winger retrieves it, but his ball into the box is cut out by Pique. Barca counter-the-counter at even greater pace, but Messi and Neymar's combination doesn't work as well as it usually does, and they hurriedly punt the ball away
...
55' Messi wriggles away from Sansone beautifully, but Bruno has his number - and that move breaks down. Villarreal are showing exactly why they have the best defence in the league here!
...
54' Suarez and Ruiz continue their ongoing duel and they clash near the byline. Suarez wants the foul, Ruiz the throw - the latter wins the decision adn Luis is not a happy hunter.
...
52' Barca try a cheeky little routine with Messi playing in Neymar quickly, but the Brazillian couldn't take advantage! He shot it straight at Asenjo! What a waste after catching the defence napping!
...
51' Neymar tries to force his way through the defence, but he isn't getting past Mussachio. The goal has upped the tempo even higher - and Neymar wins a freekick at the edge of the box after he got bundled over by three different Villarreal players
...
Alexandre Pato broke through the middle - keeping Pique and Mascherano at bay - before he slipped it through to Sansone. The Italian placed the ball into the post - and from that angle, the ball was always going to bounce it's way inside. Lovely run and EXPERT finish!
