A great end-to-end match that never let up in terms of tempo or quality highlighted the strengths of an excellent Watford and the weaknesses of the Manchester United side. The goals were quality from Watford, and Rashford (as ever) was the sole harbinger of hope for the men in Red.
There may be a few United fans (and maybe one United Manager) who will call the refereeing a bit shady, but that would be doing a disservice to Watford. Well played Hornets - if you're looking for a party and in and around the area, Vicarage Road is most certainly the place to be.
It was a blast covering this match, thank you for reading!
Have a great Sunday night!
Anirudh Menon out!
Keeping aside Jose, Pogba and all the worries that United have; this is a superb result for Watford. Thirty Years and Three Days after their last win over United, Watford have beaten Manchester United.
Ighalo and Deeney were great as always; the midfield three of Pereyra,Behrami and Capoue bossed the game for most it; Prodl, Cathcart and Britos were strong at back and Janmaat/Amrabat and Holebas were tirelessly excellent. The substitution of Zuniga proved to be a master-stroke for Mazzari.
After being trolled mercilessly all through the first few games of this season, Pogba is not likely to get any less popular on twitter is he?
That was some game. Phew!
Well, there was no saving that - the Watford skipper absolutely blooters it right down the middle.
Success outmuscles Bailly and squares the ball to Zuniga. Fellaini rams into him in typical clumsy fashion. Deeney stands over the ball.
94' AND HE WINS A PENALTY!!!!!!!
93' oooooo Success is away.....
92' Finally United have the ball. Deeney runs into Smalling inside the United box
91' YELLOW Rooney's frustration boils over and he flies into a needless tackle on Pereyra. He gets booked for his troubles
90' Watford are managing this brilliantly. They win another corner down their right, and keep the ball there. Next corner coming up.
53 seconds. that's how long it took Zuniga to score. That ends a goal drought that stretched back till 2012
89' SUBSTITUTION - Ighalo out, record signing Isaac Success on.
Oh and Watford are keeping the ball in the corner now.
88' YELLOW for Memphis as he complains vociferously after being penalised for a foul that he feels was committed on him.
87' Ibrahimovic is really trying to do something, but Wayne Rooney's touch seems to have completely deserted him. Nothing comes of the attack. NADA.
86' YELLOW Deeney gets into the ref's book for a tackle from behind on Mata. He's been asking for it all half. The freekick comes to nothing
85' SUBSTITUTION for United - United going all out as Shaw is withdrawn for Memphis Depay
That is some sublime football from Watford. Amrabat passes brilliantly to Pereyra whose near-perfect square ball is passed into the corner by the man who had just stepped onto the football field. WHAT.AN.INTRODUCTION.
82' SUBSITITION for Watford - the goalscorer Capoue of and Zuniga in. Mazzari desperate to win back some control
80' .... and Gomes does well to punch it out with Fellaini, Smalling and Zlatan all flying in around him. Brave goalkeeping
80' Watford harrying United in their own half, but Fellaini does exceptionally well to found an outlet in Young on the right. Freekick now in a good position for United. Mata stands over it......
That was a monstrous header from the Swede, and a genuinely world-class save by Gomes.
79' Great ball by Fellaini (of all people), Great header by Zlatan, Even Better Save by Gomes. Superb stuff all around
78' Fellaini does well to keep onto the well and win a corner/. Rooney sends in another rubbish corner, but with just Ighalo and Deeney outside the 18-yard box, Watford can't make much of it
77' YELLOW for Holebas
76' OOOOOO Zlatan hammers an absolute thunderbast*** into the yellow wall. Nothing comes off it, but that man has some shot on him
75' Shaw gets brought down in another of the fifty fifties that have littered this match. This time Micheal Oliver blows his whistle, and its a freekick just outside the box
73' Pogba's strength is something admirable. He bullies both Behrami and Deeney as he controls the ball in his own half. He gets a yellow though for some vociferous appealing
71' Holebas swings it out wide to Amrabat, who gives it to Pereyra - but his former Juve teammate unceremoniously dumps him onto the ground near the corner flag. From the freekick Pereyra neaaaaarly flicks it onto a teammate but the danger fizzles out
70' Watford now trying to slow things down, as they pass the ball around the back. But United are pressing well, and immediately win the ball back.
69'That goal, and Mata, are shifting the game's tempo United's way. The passing has got a lot more intricate... and accurate.
68' Another corner, Mata takes it short to Young. The ball falls to Bailly outside the box, who promptly blooters into row Z
67' Young on the attack down the right. Wins a corner. Mata stands over it
United fans are in full voice now. An exciting last twenty-five minutes awaits us
65' Rooney swings in a good ball that Fellaini almost reaches, Pogba runs on to the rebound but is bullied off the ball by two Watford defenders
64' Prodl wins yet another battle against Zlatan. Mata gets in on the action and nicks in to win the ball. After a series of passes, United win a freekick in a dangerous position. Rooney over it
