Here is the complete list of retained players ahead of IPL 2018:

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja
Delhi Daredevils: Shreyas Iyer, Chris Morris, Rishabh Pant
Kings XI Punjab: Axar Patel
Kolkata Knight Riders: Sunil Narine, Andre Russell
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya
Rajasthan Royals: Steven Smith
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan

Mumbai and Chennai cannot use their RTM for an Indian player.
KKR cannot use their RTMs for overseas players. They can retain three Indian players.
RCB and DD can retain one Indian and one overseas player.

Here is the amount of money left with each franchise after the retentions:

Sarfaraz Khan's actual prize is 1.75 crores and RCB will be deducted 3 crores.

Steve Smith and David Warner will be paid 12 crores but their teams will be deducted 12.5 crores.

Axar Patel will be paid 6.75 crores while the franchises will be deducted 12.5 crores INR.

Delhi Daredevils will pay Chris Morris 7.1 crores but will be deducted 11 crores.

Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, Andre Russell, Jasprit Bumrah cost 7 crores INR.

Suresh Raina, AB de Villiers and Hardik Pandya cost their teams 11 crores INR.

Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant cost their teams 15 crores INR.

Virat Kohli's retention fee is 17 crores INR.

Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, RCB and CSK have two RTMs left after retaining three players.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and KKR have three RTMs left after retaining two players.
Rajasthan and Kings XI Punjab will have three RTMs left in spite of retaining just one player.

Just like Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals also retain just one player, Steve Smith.

Kolkata Knight Riders retain Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.

Kings XI Punjab retain Axar Patel, yes, just one player.

Sunrisers Hyderabad retain David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Why not Rashid Khan? The SRH team management might have missed a trick there.

Royal Challengers Bangalore retain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan.

Sarfaraz ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal and KL Rahul is a big gamble. RCB will hope that it pays off.

Delhi Daredevils confirm that they are retaining Chris Morris, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer.

#ICYMI Last night, Virender Sehwag confirmed that Kings XI Punjab will retain only one player ahead of the auction. Looks like it is Axar Patel.

By retaining Sarfaraz Khan, RCB will be spending just 3 crores INR instead of 7 crores. Good move keeping their auction purse in mind.

But, can thet get back Yuzvendra Chahal using RTM for a cheaper price?

According to ESPNcricinfo, these are the names the teams will retain. The BCCI will reveal the list later in the day.

CSK's decision to retain Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja might not be a good one as the Men in Yellow could have opted for better players. Dhoni, the batsman is on the decline, Raina is not amongst the runs but one can expect him score in the IPL and Jadeja is hardly playing limited-overs cricket. The team management went in with the emotional connect the fans had with their Thala and Chinna Thala.

Jadeja's decision could only be because of the value he brings as a batsman, bowler and a fielder. This means they cannot use their RTM for R Ashwin.

There were reports that Shakib-al-Hasan has been released by the KKR team management ahead of the retention ceremony. So, Gautam Gambhir and co. won't be retaining Shakib.

Chennai Super Kings have posted a cryptic message on Twitter and one can confirm that they are going to retain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.

The event will get underway at 5 PM IST and the names will be officially announced only at 7 PM IST.

In the past, the franchises were asked to drop an e-mail about their retention list but this year, it has been understood that the franchises have been asked to send their representatives to the venue in Mumbai on January 4 and make the announcement of the players they are going to retain.

In the past, if a franchise was paying a player 15 crores (actual price), only 12 crores (guideline price) will be deducted from their budget. The IPL GC has released a new policy that will see the teams pay the highest amount of the guideline or actual price. Also, if a player is not satisfied with the price being quoted by his franchises, he could opt to be a part of the auction pool which could see him get a huge price.

This mean CSK and RR can retain the likes of MS Dhoni and Steve Smith respectively but cannot accquire the services of the likes of Samuel Badree, Mohit Sharma, Sanju Samson, Karun Nair, Chris Morris etc. as they played for some other franchises.

One question that is asked by the fans across social media is that who will CSK and RR retain as they were not a part of 2017 IPL?

Both CSK and RR, who are coming back after serving a two-year ban, can retain/use RTM for any of the players who represented them in the 2015 edition of the Indian Premier League and then moved to Gujarat Lions or Rising Pune Supergiant.

The cost of the players who can be retained through pre-auction retentions are as follows.

If the franchise retains three players: The cost of the players will be 15, 11 and 7 crores INR respectively.

If the franchise retains two players: The cost of the players will be 12.5 and 8.5 crores INR respectively.

If the franchise retains one player: The cost of the player will be 12.5 crores INR.

If the franchises retain any uncapped player, they will be deducted just 3 Crores INR per player from their auction purse instead of the above-mentioned price.

The money will be deducted from their auction purse.

What is a pre-auction retention?

Under pre-auction retention, a franchise can retain a maximum of three players from their previous squad and those names won't be a part of the IPL auction.

Either way, a franchise can retain or use RTM for a maximum of three players in the auction. Moreover, if a franchise doesn't retain even a single player before the auction, they still can't use more than three RTMs.

As per the governing council's decision, a franchise can retain five players using one of the two combinations - three pre-auction retentions and two RTMs or two pre-auction retentions and three RTMs

Last year, GC announced the retention policies and the revised salary caps ahead of the 2018 IPL auction.

The IPL Governing Council (GC) has fixed January 4, 2018, as the deadline for the franchises to announce the players who are going to be retained ahead of the 2018 IPL.
