Former South Africa Test cricketer Sid O'Linn passes away

Former South African opener Sid O'Linn passed away in Cape Town at the age of 89. O'Linn was a left-handed batsman and a stand-in wicket keeper, and played seven Tests for South Africa from 1960 to 1961. He also played 92 first-class games for various teams like Transvaal, Western Province and Kent, scoring 4525 runs at 35.62. O'Linn was a brilliant fielder when not keeping, who he took 97 catches to go with six stumpings. 

O'Linn's sporting prowess extended beyond cricket; he played represented English football club Charlton Athletic, and even represented South Africa in football in one game in 1947.

Yasir Shah declared fit, to play first Test match against Australia

The touring Pakistan side has received a major boost as their ace leg-spinner Yasir Shah has been declared fit to take part in the first Test match to be played under lights in Brisbane. 

Yasir was suffering from a back injury and missed the practice game against Cricket Australia XI. However, his inclusion in the team will gladden the hearts of the management and the fans. The first Test match will be played in Brisbane from December 15 and will be the third dy-night Test match to be played in Australia.

Dale Steyn targets June 2017 for comeback

South African pacer Dale Steyn is targeting June 2017 for making a comeback to international cricket which means he could be returning for South Africa's tour to England next year. Last month, Steyn was ruled out for at least six months after breaking a bone in his right shoulder during the second day of the Perth Test last, but Steyn hopes to begin light training by February. 

"The first two to three months is just the healing phase so by the end of February I will start to be able to do things like light bowling, start swimming and all that kind of stuff," Steyn said.

Steyn, who also ruled out of the IPL, is hoping to get fir before the Champions Trophy. "June is realistic for South Africa. I haven't had a long break like this in a good few years and every season I go into it with something wrong, whether it be a little hammie or whatever. It will be nice to go into a season, starting in June, and confidently know that I am really strong and in a good place," he said.

BCCI's review plea dismissed by Supreme Court
The BCCI had sought a review of the Supreme Court's July 18 verdict that directed it to implement the Justice Lodha panel recommendations. The Supreme Court has however, dismissed BCCI's plea today. 

A bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice S A Bobde said that the preview has been examined thoroughly. It said, "We have examined the grounds urged in support of the prayer for review. We find no error apparent on the face of the record to warrant recall of our order dated July 18, 2016. The review petitions are, accordingly, dismissed".

BCCI's review petition had sought an open court hearing and indicated that the verdict was "unreasoned" and "seeks to frame legislative measures for a private autonomous society in a field already occupied by legislations, both parliamentary and state".

Harmanpreet Kaur stars in Sydney Thunder's win

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who became the first Indian woman to join an overseas T20 league, made match-winning contributions with both bat and ball to take the Sydney Thunder to victory over the Melbourne Stars in their second fixture of this season. Kaur ended with figures of 4-27 to complete an eight wicket win. The 27-year old had impressed one and all with her enterprising batting in her maiden fixture for the side a couple of days back.

Sydney Sixers beat Brisbane Heat in their opening WBBL encounter

Led by Ellyse Perry's all-round prowess, the Sydney Sixers inflicted a heavy defeat on Brisbane Heat in their opening encounter of the Women's Big Bash League 2016. Heat could manage a meagre 83 in their allotted 20 overs, a score that was usurped by the Sixers with eight wickets to spare. Perry's unbeaten 45 steered the chase for the sixers.
