MCC's world cricket committee to get new chairman
Mike Brearley is all set to step down from his role in September next year. Replacing him will be former England captain, Mike Gatting.
Brearley, hailed as one of England's best captains, was an inaugural member since the inception of the committee 10 years ago. He had replaced Tony Lewis in 2011 as chairman. Under his stewardship, several initiatives were undertaken to promote the game. Prominent amongst them were the development of day-night Tests and the push to have cricket featured in the Olympic games.
Gatting's appointment is subject to approval by the members of the MCC in their annual general meeting in May next year. He was England's captain from 1986 to 1988 and has also served as the president of the MCC.
Matthew Fleming, the current President of the MCC, spoke highly of both individuals. "Mike Brearley combines humility, intellect and an unrivalled cricket knowledge to great effect, and the club is rightly proud of the world cricket committee's achievements under his leadership.
Mike Gatting will bring a similar wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the role and I look forward to working with him."
