Kiran Ashar, Mumbai’s former wicketkeeper-batsman expired on 27th May 2017, Saturday in a city hospital due to health complications. He was less than a month short of his 70th birthday. In his school days, Ashar scored five consecutive centuries in the Harris Shield inter-school tournament.
However, he featured only in five first-class games for Mumbai. He was a product of Bharda School and was coached by cricket legend Vinoo Mankad at LR Tairsee nets. At the age of 21, he made his debut in the Irani Cup against Rest of India in the year 1968 after which he did figure in any first class game for eight years.
Ashar made his comeback in the Ranji Trophy semis against Tamil Nadu wherein he scored 86 runs with his blade and put on 199 runs for the opening wicket stand alongside Sunil Gavaskar, which is one of his finest knocks in the first-class circuit.
