Welsh cricket club Carew, who created a huge stir after declaring on just 18 and claiming the Pembrokeshire league Division One championship have been relegated to Division Two. The Pembroke County Cricket Club (PCCC) disciplinary committee gave the verdict that meant that they would remain champions but would be relegated and handed a £300 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct while their captain has been banned for the beginning of the 2018 season.
Going into the final match against Cresselly, Carew had a 21 point advantage and declared after just 2.3 overs thereby ensuring that the opponents got 20 points for the win but not enough bonus points to overtake Carew and claim the title. The club will appeal the decision, which will be heard later this month.
PCCC secretary Steve Blowes said: "I was disappointed, really. They haven't broken any Laws of Cricket nor have they broken any rules of the Pembroke County Cricket Club. Whether it's within the spirit of cricket is a debate. I don't think it is. I think it's disrespectful for the opposition, the umpires, the scorers, the caterers, and particularly the people that have turned up to watch what they thought was going to be a cliffhanger of a final and a decider at the end of the season."
