Coal is a mineral resource that can be obtained from mining coal ore and it is mostly used for fueling furnaces, making torches, and campfires. Coal ore can be easily found underground in mountain biomes, and caves. A lump of coal can be obtained by breaking coal ore with any type of pickaxe. You can also find coal in loot chests in dungeons, igloos, strongholds, mineshafts, etc.

The most common and reliable method of getting coal is through mining. When a coal ore block is broken with a pickaxe it will drop 1 coal, but this number can be increased up to 4 with the fortune enchantment. Other sources of getting coal include mob loot and loot chests that can be found in naturally generated structures such as mineshafts, dungeons, strongholds, shipwrecks, villages, etc.

Coal is commonly used as fuel for furnaces, crafting torches, and campfires. To craft a torch you will need a stick and a piece of coal.
When a piece of coal is placed in a furnace it will burn for 80 seconds, this allows you to smelt 8 items. Coal lasts 5 times longer than wood planks or logs when used as fuel. You can also combine 9 pieces of coal to make a single block of coal that will burn for 800 seconds allowing you to smelt 80 items.
