Minecraft Color Codes

You can apply color and modifications to signs, world titles, books, named items, and chat messages in Minecraft with the section sign (§) followed by a hex digit in the message such as “§1” for Dark Blue. To type the section sign, hold down the ALT key and use only the number pad, type 2, 1 (21) and release ALT to type a §.

How to Use Color Codes in Minecraft

In a Nutshell: Type a “§” section sign by holding ALT + 2 and 1 on the numpad. Releasing ALT should place a section sign. Refer to the above graphs to change the color and formatting of the text that follows the section sign.

The § symbol can be used for any text input in Bedrock Version, while it can be used in the server.properties, pack.mcmeta, world titles, and server names in Java Edition. In Java Edition, the formatting code is disabled after the color code point if a color code is used after a formatting code. For example, §cX§nY displays as XY, whereas §nX§cY displays as XY. Therefore, when using a color code in parallel with a formatting code, first make sure the color code is used and, when swapping colors, reuse the formatting code.

Step 1: Typing the § Section Symbol

Hold down the ALT key on your keyboard. Make sure Num Lock is on. Using only the number pad, type 2, then 1 (21). Release ALT and it should type a §.

If this combination does not work, try ALT + 0, 1, 6, 7 on the number pad.

On Mac, it looks like if you hold Option and type 6, it will type the § sign (Option and 5 for extended U.S. keyboards).

Step 2: Add a Color

Refer to the above graph to change the color of your text. For this example, we’ll use Gold, or §6.

You can use any color you would like, or even color code a secret combination into the book and quill!

Step 3: Adding Formatting

If you would like to add formatting like bolding or italicizing your text, you can do so with similar syntax. Just add the chat code of the format you want to add it to the text.

You can even add multiple to the same line.

In order to get a MOTD colored or formatted, u00A7 must be used instead of §; for example, §5 would be u00A75. Colors can be used in conjunction with formatting. The formatting must be done after the color. Given that pack.mcmeta files accept raw JSON text as descriptions, the usage of § can be replaced by text components with different colors and styles though using § still works.

Formatting codes can be used to color names and descriptions in language files by using § then any of the numbers/letters displayed above. This is also used in end.txt and credits.txt. With the use of external tools, such as NBTExplorer, world names can have custom colors and formatting codes. To modify the name, choose the LevelName tag in the world's level.dat. Additionally, the player can rename the world's folder to contain one of the codes. In the world selection menu, the specified color or effect appears.

What can you Color Code in Minecraft?

The Bedrock edition of MInecraft makes color coding much more approachable than the Java edition of Minecraft. The color codes provide only an aesthetic purpose but it can be used even in your world’s title. To write color codes in a book, you will first need to create a book and quill, sign, or any other typeable line. .

  1. World titles

  1. Books

  1. Server Names

Sample Text of Color Codes

It can be helpful to see the syntax of the color codes as it can be difficult to grasp how to make it work. Simply recreating the below syntax can change the color of the text that follows.

  1. §00 §11 §22 §33

  1. §44 §55 §66 §77

  1. §88 §99 §aa §bb

  1. §cc §dd §ee §ff

Finally, the bullet points below show the syntax for obfuscated, bold, strikethrough, underline, italic, or reset. Strikethrough and underline are not compatible with the Bedrock edition of Minecraft.

Obfuscated: §rk §kMinecraft

Bold: §rl §lMinecraft

Strikethrough: §rm §mMinecraft

Underline: §rn §nMinecraft

Italic: §ro §oMinecraft

Reset: §rr §rMinecraft

Trivia

The color codes almost exactly match, in order, the 16 colors available using a Color Graphics Adapter (CGA), as released in 1981.
