Ghasts in Minecraft

Ghasts are aggressive mobs found floating around in Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, and Basalt Deltas. They shoot players with explosive fireballs. In appearance, they are relatively box-shaped with 9 large tentacles dangling under them. One distinct feature of Ghasts is their occasional crying noises which can be heard through long distances. When within range of a player they aim a fireball every three seconds, which is one of the most effective attacks in close range quarters. Due to the lack of a pursuit mode, they tend to float away instead of closing the distance and ultimately attacking them.

They cannot move through solid blocks despite their ghost-like appearance and their ability to move through other mobs. Ghasts were first introduced in the Halloween update and can spawn anywhere in the nether where there is a 5x5x5 block space.

Spawning

Ghasts need a solid block below them and 5-4-5 free space in order to spawn naturally. They spawn only in the basalt deltas, the nether wastes, and the valley of soul sand, all three of which exist only in the nether. They can spawn in the aforementioned regions regardless of the light level. Ghasts do not spawn in soul sand valleys if another ghast is within 16 blocks of spherical distance to the planned spawning spot.

Behavior

With both their eyes and mouth closed, Ghasts float across the Nether and make occasional crying noises, which can be heard from up to 80 blocks away. They have a 4x4x4 block hitbox, as well as 9 tentacles. The tentacles, though, aren't included in the hitbox.

They can incite other mobs to attack them, but do not target any mobs except players. Ghasts are one of the only mobs without a pursuit mode. This means that upon being at a long-range from the player, they tend to float away instead of closing the distance and ultimately attacking them. Ghast can take damage, from their own fireball’s explosion.

Fireball:

Ghasts face the player when within range and aim a fireball every three seconds, opening their eyes and mouth and making a screeching sound as they do so. They can only shoot a fireball if the line of sight to the player isn't being obstructed by any solid block.

The fireball strike of the Ghast travels in a straight line without any gravity. After a minute of being fired it disappears. Fireballs don't follow players once they are shot, they are slow and easy to deflect if the player strikes them with a projectile. It is, in close range quarters, one of Minecraft's most effective attacks.

The direct hit comprises six projectile damage on impact and, based on difficulty, up to 9, 17, or 25 blast damage. If two fireballs are colliding, one flies in a random direction, while the other explode upon collision. The blast also sets blocks on fire. Fires sparked by this ghast disappear if a ghast is destroyed. A fireball, if deflected by the player, deals 1000 damage to a ghast.

How to Kill a Ghast in Minecraft?

To kill a ghast you can either shoot it with your bow or deflect its fireball back towards the ghast. To do this you can either shoot it with your bow or deflect the fireball when it gets close to you. You don’t have to hit the fireball with a sword, any item will do. Try staying behind walls as much as possible until the distance is close, when it will fly upwards, which is the easiest time to defeat a ghast with a ranged weapon like a Bow.

However, if multiple ghasts are around, the best tactic is to try and get one of the ghasts between a player and the other ghast, causing one to kill the other. Lastly, another tactic with a lone ghast is to use a fishing rod to draw it close enough to damage it with a sword; although, this method can risk as fireball deals more damage in close quarters.

FAQs

Q. Why do Ghast cry?

This remains a mystery for Minecraft players to solve.

Q. What blocks are ghast proof?

Ghasts cannot destroy any blocks with a blast resistance of 26 or higher (eg iron bars, Nether Brick Blocks, or cobblestone).

Q. Is Ghast, a Ghost?

It most likely is with the official page stating “The Ghast, then. A ghost that can breathe fireballs - and as scary scenarios go, that's pretty strong.”

Q. Can Ghasts see-through glass?

No, any solid block even if it’s transparent will block a Ghast’s line of sight.

Q. Can Ghasts destroy Obsidian?

As discussed earlier, Ghasts cannot destroy any blocks with a blast resistance of 26 or higher and Obsidian has a blast resistance of 1,200. So, Ghasts cannot destroy Obsidian.

Did You Know?

  1. They are the second-largest mobs that naturally spawn in the game, the largest being the ender dragon.
  2. If a ghast is trapped in a 1-thick cube, it shoots fireballs through the cube. This is because all mobs that shoot spawn the projectile one block in front of it to prevent the projectile from hitting the mob.
  3. Ghasts are the only non-undead mob that withers are not hostile toward.
  4. If a player hits a fireball using an item with the Looting enchantment, any mob killed by that fireball has its drops affected by the enchantment as though the mob was killed by directly using the item.
