Fences were added in Minecraft Java version 0.2.0. All information about Minecraft fences, including how to craft them will be explained with this easy-to-follow and beginner-friendly short guide.
Fences are typically one of the first things you will need to craft when beginning your journey in a new world. In general, fences provide extreme utility in farming in the game and feature in most farm builds, both big and small.
Furthermore, fences have for a long time been used as staple decorative blocks within the game. Featuring 8 different styles of fences available, the humble fence is commonly utilized by builders due to its one-of-a-kind appearance.
Required Materials to Craft a Fence:
The materials you will need in order to craft a fence are 4 wood planks (any type) and 2 sticks.
You can easily craft Wood planks by dropping any piece of wood in the 2x2 crafting menu as such (4 wood planks will be gained from each woodblock):
And you can make sticks like this, by placing one wood plank on top of another in any crafting menu (two planks will output a total of 4 sticks):
Here is the step-by-step pictorial guide you need to follow to make a fence in Minecraft:
Step-1 Open a crafting table menu, this can be done by interacting with a crafting table, this guide explains more about how to make a crafting table.
Step-2 Place 2 sticks and 4 wood planks in the exact formation shown below in the crafting table menu:
Step-3 Now simply click the fence out of the crafting table and drag it into your own inventory.

Different types of wood planks can be used in the fence crafting recipe to alter the type of fence that is made. Please note, the same type of wood must always be used in the recipe. Do not mix different types of wood together in the crafting recipe as this will not produce any output.
For example, birch wood is used to make a birch fence, as shown:
Fence types include Birch (shown above), oak, acacia, nether brick, jungle, crimson, dark oak, nether brick, and warped.
To craft any aforementioned fence, use the above recipes with any wood block in the recipe replaced by the desired wood planks of the fence material. For example, use jungle wood planks to craft a jungle wood fence.
To craft crimson, nether brick or warped fences, use crimson planks, nether brick or warped planks respectively instead in the same recipe above.
Fences are most commonly used to enclose or trap mobs. This is due to the fact they cannot be jumped over, this makes for easy farming and breeding of animals in the game.

Horses are the only mobs that can jump over fences currently (without the jump boost effect).
A “carpet fence” is when a piece of carpet is placed over the original fence. This allows for you to jump over the said fence for easy farming access, while no villagers or mobs can escape (they can’t jump over).
In the current state of Minecraft as of writing (1.16.4), villagers cannot open fence gates. In short, villagers can only open doors, not gates.
Fences are an absolutely essential block in the current state of Minecraft and will help you greatly throughout your adventure. They are not only extremely cheap blocks to craft but also provide unique mechanics unseen with any other block in the game and are a crucial element in mob farms.
