To make a fishing rod, open the crafting area made up of the 3x3 grid. Place 1 stick in the last box of the first row, then place stick in the center of the second row and a string to its right. Finally, in the third row, place one stick in the first box, and a string in the last box.

Making a fishing rod is really easy. The first block you will need in making a fishing rod is a crafting table.
Step 1: The first step to making a crafting table is converting any of your recently acquired logs into wooden planks. To make wooden planks, simply place the logs that were collected into one of the slots in the survival inventory crafting table, as demonstrated below.
Step 2: Once the logs are converted into wooden planks, you can then progress to making a crafting table. To make a crafting table, place four wooden planks in the survival crafting menu to fill each of the slots in the square once, as demonstrated below.
Step 3: To eventually make a fishing rod, you have to make sticks. You can use the survival inventory crafting table or the crafting table you just created to make your sticks.
Step 4: To make sticks, place two blocks of wooden planks above each other on either the left or right side of the square, as shown below.
Step 5: Now you have to go and get your string. String can be obtained by killing spiders.
Once you have 2 pieces of string, you’re ready to make your fishing rod.
Open the crafting table GUI and place your sticks diagonally across the crafting table. Under the top-most stick, place your two string. This will create a fishing rod, as shown below.
To use a fishing rod, right click while by a body of water to throw your fishing line.
Now you must wait until you see flecks of water rushing to your line and the hook bobs under the water.
Right clicking will retract the fishing rod, and if you timed it right you should pull in an item!

Fishing rods have a durability of 64 without enchantments, meaning you can use them for 64 turns before they break.
