To make a shield, place an iron ingot in the 2nd cell of the first row, then fill up the crafting grid, except the sides of the third row, with wood planks. Then simply move it to your inventory.
Shields are very important in 1.9+ PvP, as they give players new ways to block attacks with more purpose.
Once the 1.9 update was implemented into Minecraft, PvP took a drastic turn from rapid clicking to more precisely timed hits, making critical hits a lot more important in the game. Being able to hold a shield to defend against any incoming Dual-wielding hasn’t always been a thing in Minecraft; in fact, it was only implemented in Update 1.9, which came out in 2015.

To make a shield, the first block you will need is a crafting table. The first step to making a crafting table is converting those recently acquired logs into wooden planks.
To make wooden planks, simply place the logs that were collected into one of the slots in the survival inventory crafting table, as demonstrated below.
Once the logs are converted into wooden planks, you can then progress to making a crafting table. This guide explains more about how to make a crafting table.
You will need a crafting table to make the simplest type of pickaxe for collecting your first pieces of cobblestone. You need this cobblestone to make a furnace.
The first part of making a pickaxe is making the sticks for the handle. You can use the survival inventory crafting table or the crafting table you just created to make your sticks.
To make sticks, place two blocks of wooden planks above each other on either the left or right side of the square, as shown above.
Now you have to make a pickaxe; this can be done by interacting with a crafting table. Next, in the crafting table, place a row of planks along the top of the crafting GUI and place two sticks under the middle plank, as seen above. This will create a pickaxe to use to collect your cobblestone—a required block for making a furnace.

Next you have to find some iron and coal.
Although you do only need one piece of iron for this recipe, iron is a really important resource, so it’s suggested that you collect enough of it. To collect iron, however, you need a stone pickaxe.
To make a stone pickaxe, you use the same recipe as stated before but replace the wood with cobblestone. An example is provided below.
Iron and coal spawn quite frequently and can be found around caves, in cliffsides, or even at the surface in stone-topped biomes.
Once you’ve found your coal, mine it, and begin to look for iron.
Iron generates in the generally same locations as coal, and can be found really easily both in surface caves and below the surface.
Once you’ve found your iron, you have to smelt it.
To smelt, use your furnace to smelt the iron down to an ingot.
First, open the furnace GUI.
Fill the top slot with the iron you wish to smelt.
Then place your form of fuel (in this case, coal) into the bottom slot.
Wait for the progress bar to fill, then collect your iron.
Once you have your iron ingot, you can finally make your shield!

To craft shield in Minecraft, First place down your crafting table. Then open the crafting table GUI as shown:
To make a shield, place your wooden planks in a Y-shape in the crafting table, filling the two corner spots of the first row, the entire second row, and the center spot of the third row. Then fill in the middle spot of the first row with your iron ingot.
This will make a shield!
Shields are used to block both melee and projectile attacks. Raising your shield when a skeleton shoots at you, for example, will stop you from taking damage from the arrow. Raising your shield during zombie attacks or other attacks like that will stop you from taking damage.
Each hit to the shield does make it lose durability, though, so be careful to check when your shield is going to break.
Shields are controlled the same way that you would use an item: by right-clicking. You must hold your right-click to keep the shield up and protecting.
There is only one type of shield in Minecraft. You can decorate them with banners though by combining a banner with the shield in a crafting GUI.
