How to make a Stonecutter in Minecraft: Step by Step Guide

Sometimes, regular old Stone just does not cut it for the aesthetic you are seeking. The good news is that Stonecutters in Minecraft do cut it, it being any kind of stone block that you want to transform into a Wall, Slab, or Step.

Figuring out how to find a Stonecutter and work it can be difficult, though. So this guide will simplify the steps for acquiring and interacting with your Stonecutter.

Required Items for a Stonecutter

To obtain a Stonecutter, you will need:

  1. Crafting Table
  2. Pickaxe
  3. Iron Ingot
  4. Three Stone
  5. Furnace & Fuel

Stonecutters are a relatively easy item to obtain in Minecraft, especially for such a useful device. There are two ways of getting a Stonecutter: the first is to steal one from a Village or you can go the harder route and craft one of your own.

Given that Stonecutters are only really necessary for aesthetic projects—not as progression toward The End or setting up your first base—you will probably have the materials needed to create one on hand by the time you want to make a Stonecutter. If not, stealing one from a Village is super easy.

All you need to collect a Stonecutter from a Village is any kind of Pickaxe. Here’s a brief how-to article on Pickaxes, if you require more information on them.

If you are opposed to thievery, crafting a Stonecutter of your own is no great problem. All you need is an Iron Ingot and three stones.

Depending on if you are playing the Bedrock or Java versions of Minecraft, the kind of stone you need will vary. In Java, the three stones must be Stone blocks while in Bedrock any three of these blocks in any combination will suffice:

  1. Andesite
  2. Polished Andesite
  3. Diorite
  4. Polished Diorite
  5. Polished Granite
  6. Granite
  7. Stone

For simplicity’s sake, we will focus on Stone and there are two simple ways to get Stone blocks. You could enchant a Pickaxe with Silk Touch and mine some Stone. Otherwise, you could mine Stone to harvest Cobblestone, and then smelt the Cobblestone in a Furnace.

If you do not have a Furnace, see this article about how to make your own. To fuel the Furnace, mine some Coal ore with any Pickaxe.

Once you have three blocks of Stone, all you will need to complete your Stonecutter is an Iron Ingot. For more information on how to get an ingot, have a look at this article.

How to make a Stonecutter in Minecraft?

In a Nutshell:

Steal one from a Village! If you are pure of heart, smelt some Cobblestone and Iron Ingots to craft one of your own.

Step-by-step (with Pictures):

(Assuming you want to make your own and do not have the Silk Touch enchantment. If you do, mine some stone and skip to Step 3)

Step 1: Take your Cobblestone and interact with the Furnace.

Step 2: Smelt your Cobblestone into an Iron Ingot.

Step 3: Smelt your Iron Ore into an Iron Ingot in your Furnace.

Step 4: Open the 3x3 Crafting Table grid.

Step 5: Follow this recipe exactly to craft your Stonecutter. (In the Bedrock version of Minecraft, you can substitute Stone for any of the types of rock listed in the last section.)

How to use a Stonecutter in Minecraft?

The Stonecutter is a relatively simple machine that makes your redesign projects much simpler. Basically, the Stonecutter can take one block of any variety of rock and turn it into a Slab, Step, Wall, etc. of the same type of rock. Not only that, a block of Smooth Stone can be cut into two Smooth Stone Slabs, for example.

Here is a list of all the possible inputs for a Stonecutter and what can be produced from that item:

  1. Stone —> Stone Slab, Stairs, Stone Bricks, or Chiseled Stone Bricks
  2. Stone Bricks —> Stone Brick Slab, Stairs, Wall, or Chiseled Stone Bricks
  3. Smooth Stone —> Smooth Stone Slab
  4. Mossy Stone Bricks —> Mossy Stone Brick Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  5. Granite —> Granite Slab, Stairs, Wall, Polished Granite, Polished Granite
  6. Polished Granite —> Polished Granite Slab or Stairs
  7. Diorite —> Diorite Slab, Stairs, Wall, Polished Diorite
  8. Polished Diorite —> Polished Diorite Slab or Stairs
  9. Andesite —> Andesite Slab, Stairs, Wall, or Polished Andesite
  10. Polished Andesite —> Polished Andesite Slab or Stairs
  11. Cobblestone —> Cobblestone Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  12. Mossy Cobblestone —> Mossy Cobblestone Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  13. Sandstone —> Sandstone Slab, Stairs, Wall, Cut Sandstone, or Chiseled Sandstone
  14. Cut Sandstone —> Cut Sandstone Slab
  15. Smooth Sandstone —> Smooth Sandstone Slab or Stairs
  16. Red Sandstone —> All versions of Red Sandstone make the same as their standard counterpart; they are just red.
  17. Prismarine —> Prismarine Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  18. Prismarine Bricks —> Prismarine Brick Slab or Stairs
  19. Dark Prismarine —> Same as Prismarine
  20. Block of Quartz —> Quartz Slab, Stairs, Block, Pillar, or Bricks
  21. Smooth Quartz —> Smooth Quartz Slab or Stairs
  22. Purpur Block —> Purpur Slab, Stairs, or Pillar
  23. Bricks —> Brick Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  24. Nether Bricks —> Nether Brick Slab, Stairs, Wall, or Chiseled Nether Bricks
  25. Red Nether Bricks —> Red Nether Brick Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  26. Basalt —> Polished Basalt
  27. End Stone —> End Stone Bricks, Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  28. End Stone Bricks —> End Stone Brick Slab, Stairs, or Wall
  29. Blackstone —> Blackstone, Blackstone Slab, Stairs, or Polished Blackstone
  30. Polished Blackstone —> Polished Blackstone Bricks, Slab, Stairs, Chiseled Polished Blackstone, Polished Blackstone Brick Slab, Polished Blackstone Brick Stairs, or Polished Blackstone Brick Wall
  31. Block of Copper, Exposed Copper, Weathered Copper, Oxidized Copper, Waxed Copper, Waxed Exposed Copper, or Waxed Weathered Copper —> Cut Copper of the corresponding type

Most of these materials could be crafted with a Crafting Table but not as efficiently. The Stonecutter will give you at least one of each output, if not more, for each input.

FAQs

Do Villagers get angry if you take their Stonecutter?

Fortunately no, Villagers will not get angry at the player unless they harm another Villager.

Do Stonecutters have any special features?

Yes, if a Stonecutter is used with a Note Block, it sounds like a bass drum. Be sure to place the Note Block on top of the Stonecutter to get the sound effect!

Conclusion

While by no means a necessary tool to make your ideal rocky home, the Stonecutter will make any project using specialized stone much easier. And for those unafraid to pillage a village, it is an incredibly easy tool to get.
