Piglins

Piglins are neutral mobs that can be found in the nether. They will become hostile if the player is not equipped with at least one piece of golden armor. Players can make use of gold ingots and use them to barter with piglins for various items.

Where do Piglins spawn?

Piglins can spawn in bastions, crimson forests, and nether wastes usually in groups of 2-4 at a light level of 11 or less in Java Edition whereas in Bedrock edition they will spawn at light level 7 or lower on most blocks. They can even spawn in peaceful difficulty in Bedrock Edition. Each piglin has a 20% (Java Edition) or 5% (Bedrock Edition) chance of spawning as a baby.

They will sometimes spawn with weapons (50% chance) such as swords and crossbows, and can sometimes spawn with any armor piece (40% chance). Babies spawn without any equipment.

What do piglins drop?

When killed an adult with weapons equipped there is an 8.5% chance of the piglin dropping the held item (Golden Sword or Crossbow). Each Looting level increases the chances by 1%. In Java Edition if a piglin picks up an item it will drop them with the same durability when killed.

In Bedrock edition items like armor will lose durability and can even break depending on how much damage the piglin takes. When killed by a player or a tamed wolf adult piglins will drop 5 experience orbs and baby piglins drop 1 orb.

Armor Drops

Sometimes adults spawn with 1-4 pieces of normal or enchanted armor could be Golden Helmet, Golden Chestplate, Golden Leggins, and Golden Boots. Their chance of dropping their armor is 8.5%, and they can pick up other types of armor.

How do Piglins behave?

If a piglin spots a gold-related item in your hand they will start snorting enviously. Like villagers, they can open wooden doors but cannot open iron doors, all trapdoors, and fence gates. If they spot zombified piglins, soul torches, soul fire, soul lanterns, zoglins, and lit soul campfires they will keep their distance and move away. Baby piglins are passive and just like to run around and play with baby hoglins.

Aggravation

Piglins are neutral towards players who have at least one piece of golden armor equipped. They are provoked by players who are not wearing any gold armor or if they attack a piglin or piglin brute. There are three different levels of aggravation.

Light Aggravation

This occurs when a piglin spots a player without any gold armor equipped. The piglin can be de-aggravated by the player if they put on a piece of golden armor, distract the piglin with gold ingots, and by breaking the line of sight with the piglin.

Medium Aggravation

If a player breaks a container/gold block or attacks a piglin/piglin brute and is seen by a piglin medium aggravation will occur. They can still be distracted by gold ingots.

Heavy Aggravation

Heavy aggravation occurs when a piglin is damaged by the player, in this state they cannot be distracted by gold and will not barter with gold ingots.

Piglins do not react to the breaking of dispensers, smokers, hoppers, droppers, furnaces, blast furnaces, and brewing stands. Breaking a bell will not provoke them as well even if they are admiring it as gold.

Attacking

An adult piglin will start attacking a hoglin randomly but not on sight. The target by one piglin other piglins in the area will join in as well and hunt the targeted hoglin. If the piglins are outnumbered by the hoglins they will flee and make a “retreat” while doing so.

After they defeat a hoglin, they have a 10% chance of doing a “victory dance” in which they will bob their heads while sticking their hands out like a T-pose.

Bartering

When a gold ingot is dropped near a piglin they will pick it up and start bartering for it, after some time they will drop a random item from a predetermined list of items. Be careful of baby piglins as they will just run away with the gold instead of dropping an item in exchange.

Zombification

When brought to the End or the Overworld Piglins transform into zombified piglins, they retain their armor, weapons, and their name. After they complete their transformation they will drop all the items in their inventory except for the armor and equipped weapons.

Conclusion

Piglins can be useful mobs for bartering, they will not interfere with your adventures in the nether as long as you keep your distance. If you come across a bastion it is definitely worth checking it out as it's loaded with gold blocks and chests but be cautious while looting them.
