Village in Minecraft

Villages are a cluster of random natural structures that are generated in the Overworld and you will find Villagers, Cats, and Iron Golems that spawn here. Wandering traders can also spawn in villages. Sometimes you will also find passive livestock mobs and zombie villagers. For players villages are a good source of items that can be obtained from chests or through trading with villagers.

How does a Village get generated?

Villages will generally get generated in plains, savanna, taiga, meadows, and desert biomes. The biome in which the village spawn dictates the styling of the structures that get generated. The number of villagers that will get spawned depends on the number of beds in the houses of the village.

A villager will spawn only in houses with beds, job site buildings will always generate even if there are no villagers. If any sort of structure related to the village is generated over open-air, circular, or square of grass or sad generates below the structure which can cause oddities in the generation, the platforms will not generate. Village buildings can also be found on windswept hills while the other building will be at the bottom of the hill.

Upon generation of a village the following mobs can spawn:

  1. Iron Golem
  2. Villager
  3. Horse
  4. Pig
  5. Cow
  6. Sheep
  7. Zombie Villager (only in abandoned villages)
  8. Cat (one cat will spawn for every 4 beds)
  9. Wander Trader (will spawn periodically)
  10. Trader Llama (will spawn with a wandering trader)
  11. Pillager (only during raids)
  12. Vindicator (only during raids)
  13. Evoker (only during raids)

Structure of villages

The total number of structures that a village varies and not all different types of structures will get generated at once. Villages have a meeting point, which is unique and systematic, the number of buildings of each type is randomly generated.

The number of decorative structures such as torches, hay bales, pumpkin patches, etc. have no restrictions and will spawn where no buildings have been generated. The styling of the village greatly depends on the village type and the biome.

Pathing

Villages have generated paths that can be seen running between the buildings and will sometimes extend outside the village itself. These paths can even go up steep hills or down ravines without any regard for any entities that can traverse the path. In plains, savanna, taiga, and snowy villages the paths are comprised of dirt and grass blocks. Whereas for desert villages the paths are generated with smooth sandstone blocks.

Abandoned Village

Villages have a 2% chance of generating as abandoned villages. In an abandoned village you will find mostly zombie villagers, and the building might appear damaged and have some missing blocks. The zombie villagers that spawn are resistant to sunlight and will not despawn naturally. Stray cats and livestock might still spawn in abandoned villages but Iron golems won't. There can be more buildings in an abandoned village when compared to a normal village.

Raid

After killing an illager captain the player will receive the Bad Omen effect for 100 minutes, while this status effect is active entering a village will trigger a raid. During a raid groups of illagers will be spawned and proceed to attack the village. Killing multiple illager captains will impose a higher degree of Bad Omen, the higher the degree the better equipped the raiders will be.

Zombie Sieges

Zombie sieges much like raids are an event where zombies may spawn in a village regardless of how well lit or walled off the village is. They have a 10% chance of taking place at midnight or even during thunderstorms. The village must have at least 20 beds, the only indication that a zombie siege is taking place would be an increased number of zombies.

Bedrock Edition

Villages in Bedrock Edition have some differences from Java Edition. For a Village to be generated a villager has to link with a bed, after which the village will start to generate and exist as long as a single villager that is linked to a bed is left. If all the beds are destroyed, then the village will cease to exist.

For the generation of the village, an area of 65x25x65 block is reserved which is centered on the bed linked with the first villager. The boundaries and the center of the village may change over time as more villagers start to link with beds. In a naturally generated village, you can usually find a bell at its center.

Conclusion

Villages are a great place to trade, loot, and acquire some livestock for yourself. You can even get a cat as they spawn in villages. Lots of villagers have jobs that give them unique trades which can be quite handy as they will sometimes have some rare items which cannot be found easily.
