Sharpness is by far the most versatile combat enchantment in Minecraft. You literally cannot find a single enemy in Minecraft that will not take extra damage from this enchantment. While every enchantment is worth having around, this is a strong contender for your main sword enchantment.
Since you can only choose one sword enchantment, players will have to pick between Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods. However, players can still combine this with other relevant enchantments like Knockback, Mending, Sweeping Edge, and Unbreaking.
Sharpness V at its max level increases the damages of your Sword or Axe against all enemies in Minecraft. This means you can approach any enemy and rest assured that only a few strikes will slay your foe. In particular, Sharpness V adds 1.25 extra damage on top of your Material bonuses like Diamond and Netherite.
This enchantment can only be activated on a Sword or Axe. A Sword with Sharpness V is a solid contender as your secondary weapon because it can slay almost any enemy in only a few short strikes.

Smite is one of the three main damage enchantments for Swords and Axes. This means you can only use one of these three per Sword or Axe. If you attempt to combine these enchantments, you will find yourself unable to do so. However, this means that this is a great first enchantment. If you enchant your weapon with this first, there is no chance that you will accidentally switch to a different enchantment like Sharpness or Bane of Arthropods.

Both of these enchantments serve their own purpose. Smite is by far the stronger of the two, dealing twice as much bonus damage. Alternatively, Sharpness is more consistently damaging as it enhances damage against all enemies in Minecraft.
