How to Make a Beehive in Minecraft

In Minecraft, there are so many different types of animals. Some animals are easy to find like cows and pigs, and they’re even easier to breed. One requires wheat and the other requires carrots. They’re even easier to keep at your base. All you need to do is fence them off, but what if the animal can fly over the fence? Bees were added Minecraft in the 1.15 update and with that, the game came with a way to breed them, but what about housing them?

Bees naturally spawn in bee nests, but when you break a bee nest you don’t get the nest back. To house bees, you need to craft a beehive. In this guide, you will learn how to make a beehive and the safest way to craft it.

How to Make a Beehive in Minecraft?

In a Nutshell:

To make Beehive, open the crafting area made up of the 3x3 grid. Fill the entirety of the 1st and 3rd rows with wooden planks of your choice. Then place three honeycombs obtained from bee nests in the middle row. Your beehive has been made, now simply click it and drag it into your inventory.

Step-by-Step Guide(with Pictures):

Here is the step-by-step pictorial guide you need to follow to Make a Beehive in Minecraft:

Step 1: Gather Wood

The first thing that you want to do when making a beehive is to gather some wood. You don’t need that much. All you need is two blocks of wood. To get wood, all you need to do is punch a tree. You can then turn one piece of oak wood into four wooden planks in your crafting table.

Step 2: Obtain Honeycomb

Now that you have enough wooden planks for your beehive, you actually need honeycombs. Honeycombs are very easy to get. All you need to do is break a bee nest with sheers. Bee nests naturally spawn anywhere throughout your world and sheers are really easy to get. To obtain sheers, all you need to do is get two iron ingots. To do this, you first need to get an stone pickaxe, you first need to craft a wooden pickaxe. To do this, you need three wooden planks and two sticks. Once you have obtained those materials, you can put them in your crafting table with the following pattern.

Crafting a wooden pickaxe

Now that you have created your wooden pickaxe, you need to upgrade it to stone. To do this, you need three pieces of cobblestone and to get that, you have to mine three pieces of stone in a cave. Caves are lined with stone so it shouldn’t be difficult at all to get stone. The stone in a cave will be any of the gray blocks that you see below.

Now that you have your stone pickaxe, you just need to go mining. Find two blocks of iron ore and mine them. After mining them, you have to go to your furnace and smelt them down. Two blocks of iron ore will smelt into two iron ingots. Then, go to your crafting table with the iron ingots and follow the recipe below.

Step 3: Safely Collect a Bee Nest

Once you have sheers, you can go and mine a bee nest. This will drop three honeycombs, but remember that if you mine a bee nest, the bees will become hostile. There are two ways to prevent this. The first is to put a campfire, or simply light a fire with a flint and steel, underneath the bee nest. This will cause the bees to become docile when you mine the bee nest. The other way is to use a dispenser with sheers inside of it. This will cause the honeycombs to pop out as a dropped item, but it will not anger the bees.

Now that you have your three honeycombs and your six wooden planks, all you need to do is go to your crafting table. Beehives have an easy crafting recipe. In the crafting grid, the top and bottom row should be filled with wooden planks. The middle row is where the three honeycombs will go. This will turn those items into beehives.

How to Break Beehives

While you are exploring throughout your world, you may encounter naturally occurring beehives. It can be an easy way to get your honey farm started quickly. To obtain these beehives, you will need to use a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment. While beehives break quickly with the use of axes or hands, you will not obtain the beehive unless a tool with Silk Touch is used.

You also need Silk Touch to ensure you do not anger the bees inside the hive. If you attempt to break a beehive with a tool that is not enchanted with Silk Touch, any bees inside will immediately aggro to the player.

How to Farm Beehives

While beehives will appear naturally during world generation, you can also force bees to spawn by growing trees. Any oak or birch sapling, when grown within two blocks of a flower, will have a 5% chance to spawn with a beehive. Any type of flower can be used, but you will need to ensure it is within the same Y axis.

Beehive Advancements

There are two advancements to obtain through beehives in Minecraft. You can obtain the “Bee Our Guest” advancement by using a campfire to collect honey from a Beehive. Please note that you will need to do so without aggravating the bees in order to obtain the advancement.

You can also obtain the “Total Beelocation” advancement by successfully mining a beehive with three bees inside. In order to obtain this advancement, the tool you mine the beehive with will require the Silk Touch enchantment.
