The weigh-ins have been a part of UFC events for a long, long time and most of the time, they pass without incident.

However, on occasion, they can produce wild brawls, gentle mocking, full-blown incidents and other moments of mirth.

They are a press affair and a last-ditch opportunity for the company to promote their events. They are also an occasion where an event can be ruined by a fighter missing weight. The list of title fights that have been cancelled or switched to non-title fights is long. Yoel Romero missing weight prior to his Middleweight title bout with Robert Whittaker at UFC 225 is a memorable example of this.

Even more memorably, they can see opposing fighters look to gain a psychological edge as they use kicks, punches and utilise any method they can to gain an edge before their major fights.

UFC 229 showed this off in stereo. The weigh-ins had passed without incident until Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov emerged. Lewis knocked off the Russian's hat sparking a brawl where Volkov managed to land a blow on Lewis.

Subsequently, show headliner Conor McGregor talked a massive amount of trash to his opponent in the UFC 229 main event, Khabib Nurmagomedov and even aimed a kick at his foe. On this occasion, it didn't land, and the icy calm, Khabib retained his composure when he declared he would defeat McGregor. Beat him he did and his cool, calm demeanor finally deserted him in the post-fight when he sparked the now infamous arena-wide brawl.

Hilarity can ensue, such as when Roy Nelson turned up to a weigh-in, wearing a feminine hair clip through his ragged mane of hair. There have been plenty of other amusing moments that have taken place at the weigh-ins. Whether these help sell the events or not, it is impossible to say but what it does do, is bring a smile to the faces of interested observers.

This slideshow casts an eye over five funny weigh-in moments in UFC history.

#4 Big Country loses weight then wears a fat suit (UFC 137)

Roy Nelson is renowned as a fighter who carries excess weight but prior to UFC 137 the Heavyweight had considerably slimmed down prior to his bout with Croatian, Mirko Cro Cop.

Curious then, that Nelson showed up to the weigh-ins wearing a ludicrous fat suit that made him appear larger than ever.

Nelson stated that his fat suit was designed to mask his true weight, presumably not wanting fans or Cro Cop to see his physique prior to entering the Octagon.

It was a very surreal situation and one that the notoriously serious, no-nonsense Cro Cop did not appear to be amused by.

It was a different story for onlookers though who could not help be amused by Nelson's bizarre antics.

The last laugh also belonged to Nelson as he upset Cro Cop to win their UFC 137 encounter via TKO.

#3 Leonard Garcia dresses up as a Zombie (UFC Fight Night 24, March 26, 2011)

Leonard Garcia amused onlookers at the Fight Night 24 weigh-ins when he lightly mocked his opponent, Chan Sung Jung's nickname, the Korean Zombie by turning up wearing a ridiculously oversized Zombie-esque mask.

Garcia raised laughs from onlookers but not his Fight Night opponent, Jung.

The pair had met before in WEC and Jung was intent on avenging his earlier defeat in that encounter, this time within the confines of the Octagon.

Garcia's mocking only added fuel to the fire for the Korean Zombie to gain a measure of revenge. He ultimately did, as a dominating performance saw him submit Garcia at Fight Night 24.

It was the Korean Zombie who had the last laugh, not the mocking version on display at the weigh-ins.

#2 Johny Hendricks has his excuses ready for missing weight... oh wait! (UFC 217, November 4, 2017)

Johny Hendricks has always been good for a laugh.

The jovial entertainer ensured that onlookers were left laughing at him, rather than with him during the weigh-ins prior to UFC 217.

Scheduled to compete against Paolo Costa in a Middleweight encounter, Hendricks who had a history of missing weight seemingly believed he had failed to make weight yet again.

Jumping the gun, Hendricks had his excuses planned prior to stepping on the scales. He told the onlooking media all the reasons why he was set to miss weight, including a curious excuse regarding his choice of underwear. He asked the journalists present not to write anything negative about his failure to make the 186 Ibs weight limit.

Then Hendricks stepped on the scales and made weight by 0.2Ibs. Oh dear! He was left embarrassed by his pre-weigh in speech and ensured he gave the media something else to write about!

#1 Ronda Rousey hits herself in the face (UFC 193, November 14, 2015)

Ronda Rousey: Came off worse at the weigh-in and her UFC 193 title fight

At the UFC 193 weigh in, Ronda Rousey was embarrassed. The then-Bantamweight Champion cut a surly mood throughout, but that was set to worsen considerably.

During the customary staredown, she aimed her fist towards her challenger, Holly Holm's face. Holm responded by going inside Rousey's arm. Rousey used an overhook to try to wrest free, but only succeeded in using Holm's fist to effectively punch herself in the face. Oops!

Unfortunately for Rousey, the accident proved to be an unwelcome omen of what lay ahead.

Rousey's 12 fight unbeaten streak was unceremoniously snapped by the aggressive Holm, who battered Rousey with leg kicks and punches, to end her Bantamweight title reign in the UFC 193 headliner to become the new champion.

Rousey would fight once more (in another losing effort to Amanda Nunes) before calling it a career.
