Sean O'Malley recently revealed an important aspect of his preparation for both training and fights. According to 'Sugar', he likes to arrive at the gym early to stretch and basically idle around for 30 minutes before the actual warm-up starts.

O'Malley also claims that with longer warm-ups, he has gotten better at preventing himself from getting injured. The UFC bantamweight reiterated the well-known fact that warming up can help prevent injuries in all kinds of sports. The 27-year-old recently told Joe Rogan on The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast:

"I go to the gym early, kind of just stretch, warm up, pop some headphones on. Leading up to the fight, I'm very very calm... Untill it's time to, 'Okay, let's start warming up for real. We got thirty minutes to fight'... But I've gotten a lot better as warming up. It just helps so much with preventing injuries, for everything. Going to the sparring, going to the competition training or wrestling or whatever it is. But just getting to the gym 30 minutes before the class starts, before the warm-up."

Joe Rogan talks about Sean O'Malley's controversial UFC 280 decision win over Petr Yan

It was a big step up in competition for Sean O'Malley when he faced Petr Yan at UFC 280. 'Sugar' went toe-to-toe against the former champion for three rounds, edging out a closely contested split decision.

While large sections of the MMA community deemed the decision controversial, O'Malley had certainly established himself as an elite bantamweight contender. During O'Malley's recent appearance on the JRE podcast, Joe Rogan weighed in on his UFC 280 victory over 'No Mercy'.

The UFC color commentator noted that O'Malley had outnumbered 'No Mercy' in terms of significant strikes landed, as per UFC stats. Rogan also believes that Yan not being able to do much with his takedowns, titled the scorecards towards 'Sugar'. The 55-year-old said:

"I was like, 'No, that's not a bad decision.' There was one round to you in the beginning, second round to Yan, third round to you. If you look at damage done, you look at overall strikes and impact, you landed more. He definitely took you down. But how much was done with that? That's the thing. It's like, what does that count for?"
