Andrea Iannone: I'm In the form of my life

Iannone on the podium at the MotoGP of Italy. He finished the race in second

Ducati rider Andrea Iannone, fresh off a stellar Italian Grand Prix, has said he is eagerly looking forward to the Catalan Grand Prix. Describing himself as being “in the form of my life”, the 25-year-old is in excellent nick.

Iannone won his career-first pole position in Mugello at the Italian Grand Prix, finishing that race in second behind Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo of Movistar Yamaha GP, who scored his third victory in a row, following wins at the Spanish MotoGP in Jerez, and at Le Mans.

The Italian has had victories at the track before, albeit in the 125cc and Moto2 categories. He drove a stellar race at Mugello despite a niggling injury which he says gives him ‘constant pain.’ Iannone suffered a crash while testing at the track prior the Italian Grand Prix, and medical examination later found a fracture to Iannone’s humerus or funny bone in his shoulder.

At the time, Iannone had said he “did not want to disappoint the fans” or his team, Ducati – and he did not even come close, as he raced through the pain to finish the race just behind Lorenzo.

He is fond of the circuit at Catalunya, calling it a “great track”, and although by his own admission, he is not at 100% fitness, he has said he finds a definite improvement in his training, and his shoulder was “a bit better” than before. Referring to his run at Mugello, he described that racing weekend as “fantastic despite my physical difficulties.” Iannone is currently 4th in the drivers’ standings with 81 points, behind Valentino Rossi of Movistar Yamaha MotoGP at 118, Rossi’s teammate Jorge Lorenzo at 112, and Iannone’s own teammate Andrea Dovizioso, who is at 83 points.

Double World Champion Marc Marquez is currently 5th in the drivers’ standings behind Iannone.

The first practice session for the Catalan MotoGP commences tomorrow, Friday the 12th of June at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmelo, Barcelona.
