Yamaha YZR-M1 was specifically designed by the Yamaha to race in the MotoGP World championships. It is designed with a 1000cc engine and replaced the 500cc engine in 2002. The bike has gone through several iterations through the 990cc,800cc, and 1000cc eras of MotoGP racing.

Yamaha designed this bike because it felt that it would be perfect to have a mutual balance with the frame. The M1 was test driven by notable racers such as Max Biaggi, John Kocinski, Norihiko Fujiwara, and Kyoji Namba. It was in 2004 that Valentino Rossi signed a two-year contract with Yamaha which was worth the US $6 million per season. It was widely felt by Rossi's critics that he would not be able to perform well on this bike but he proved them to be wrong as he went on to win the championships in 2004.

The partnership between the bike and Rossi continued to flourish in 2005 as he won the championship again by a margin of 147 points. The bike is hailed as one of the best bikes that Rossi has used in his career. He admitted in 2005 that this bike was one of the best bikes he has ever used. It was thought that this bike will go on to propel Rossi to the top of the table in 2015 but was unable to do so as Rossi finished five points behind Jorge Lorenzo.
