Creation and History of Baryon Mode

Baryon Mode is deadly ninjutsu used by Naruto Uzumaki in his final battle against Isshiki Otsutsuki in the Boruto series. Naruto and Kurama used this terrifying ability in episode 216 titled Sacrifice, in the Boruto: Naruto Next Generation anime. According to the information available, this was the first instance Baryon Mode was ever mentioned or used in the series.

This is a unique technique that Kurama can use with its Jinchuriki. To activate this form, Kurama used Naruto’s and his own chakra as raw materials to form a new and powerful chakra. This is similar to the process of nuclear fusion. This fusion creates a new form of chakra and tremendous energy along with it.

Baryon Mode increases its user’s strength, reflexes, and speed tremendously, so much that it took Isshiki Otsutsuki, who was capable of overpowering Naruto and Sasuke Uchiha with ease, by surprise. Once Naruto activated this mode, he easily overpowered Isshiki in a fight.

However, all the boosts that Baryon Mode offers its user are not its specialty. As long as Baryon Mode is activated, it shaves off its user’s lifespan as well as anyone its user is in contact with. This means that even if the opponent punched or attacked Naruto and connected with him physically, his/her lifespan would be shaved off. In the case of a standard shinobi, a mere touch would mean death.

Baryon mode is indeed an overpowered ability, but it comes with its drawbacks. The deadliest drawback of Baryon Mode is that its use results in the unavoidable demise of Kurama. Although Kurama, a tailed chakra beast, is immortal in the sense that he is capable of reincarnation, he most definitely died as a drawback of this ninjutsu. Tailed chakra beasts are essentially just huge concentrations of chakra and as long as their chakra is there, they can reincarnate. Baryon Mode consumed all of Kurama’s chakra which means he cannot reappear. Fortunately, as Kurama was not extracted but all of his chakra was consumed, Naruto was able to escape death against his wishes.

The second major drawback of Baryon Mode is its time limit. Although it provides a tremendous boost in stats, it also consumes a huge amount of chakra for the slightest movement. If the user is not careful, all of his chakra would be consumed and the mode would wear off without being able to utilize it. Due to the high risk, the user must avoid making any pointless motions or acting on irrational impulses, concentrating solely on the most calculated actions to maintain Baryon Mode. Even though this technique is extremely powerful, Kurama suggested using it as a last resort even while considering all the drawbacks it comes along with.
