Chōza was partnered with Shikaku Nara and Inoichi Yamanaka when he became a genin. During the Third Shinobi World War, he was responsible for his own genin team consisting of Ebisu, Genma Shiranui and Might Guy. As the conflict drew to a close, his crew was tasked with delivering a request for a peace treaty between Konoha and Iwagakure. Anticipating that the Iwa shinobi might turn hostile, the gathering was strategically held near the Land of Wind’s border, knowing that the Fourth Kazekage would monitor the meeting if a war broke out near Suna territory.
A few years later, Chōza discovered that Chōji was being treated as an outcast because of his weight and that other youngsters were saying that the Akimichi were useless ninja. He promised Chōji that one day he would have loyal friends who would see the real Chōji.
Chōza was the chief of the Akimichi clan and a member of the “Ino-Shika-Chō” trio with Shikaku Nara and Inoichi Yamanaka, and his name was the Chō part of the group name. Before Chōji became a genin, he led him to the Yamanaka, Nara and Akimichi Clan Memorial, where he told him about the three clans’ special relationship and his future as the Akimichi’s next head.
Chōza’s first appearance was during the Chūnin Exam Festival, sitting alongside his former teammates who were discussing the fact that Inoichi had a daughter and how troublesome that was, according to Shikaku, while Chōza was only looking at the menu to order everything on the page. Chōza offered Shikamaru to join them for dinner when the latter arrived to pick up his father.
He is seen during the conclusion of the Konoha Crush, where he trampled some Otogakure shinobi and later met up with Inoichi and Shikaku to reunite the Ino-Shika-Chō Trio.
Chōza visits the hospital after Chōji consumes the Three Coloured Pills. Despite the fact that he is unable to see Chōji because he is healing, he expresses relief that Tsunade returned to the hamlet and thereby saved his son’s life.
When Pain’s Assault on Konoha begins, Chōza creates a team with Chōji to scout the village in search of enemies. They are pulled to the location of Kakashi’s fight with Pain. When Chōza and Chōji arrive, they demolish the Asura Path before moving on to the Deva Path. The Deva Path’s Shinra Tensei defeats much of the team, but its brief appearance allows Chōza, Chōji and Kakashi to figure out how its abilities function and devise an offensive strategy. Kakashi buries a chain underground while Chōza and Chōji attack it with the Double Bullet Tank, grabbing the chain as they are thrown back to immobilize the Deva Path while Kakashi attacks. The still-active Asura Path deflects his strike, giving the Deva Path enough time to respond.
Chōza is apparently slain in the aftermath. A mini-Katsuyu quickly clings onto him, which allows Tsunade to remotely monitor him and verify that he is still alive. She informs Chōji of this and advises him to transport Chōza to the hospital. Chōji remains with Chōza for the duration of the assault.
When the Fourth Shinobi World War broke out, Chōza was assigned to the First Division, which was sent to the Land of Lightning’s border to defend against an incoming Akatsuki alliance. After employing the Multi-Size Technique, he engaged a reincarnated Asuma Sarutobi and Dan Katō, the latter of whom observes that Chōza has grown since the last time they saw each other. During the combat, Chōza distracted Dan as other Division members prepared to trap him in the Four Violet Flames Formation.
Soon, Chōza got lured into other conflicts taking place on the battlefield while fighting Dan. He blocked a strike from Kinkaku’s extended tail after he transformed. Chōza leaped in front of Asuma’s Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning to defend them later when Chōji was having problems fighting Asuma. He reminded Chōji of his responsibilities as the next Akimichi head, giving his son the courage he needed to confront his teacher. Chōza then watched with pride as Chōji defeated Asuma using the clan’s calorie control technique as well as the Butterfly Bullet Bombing Technique.
By the end of the night, Dan had been defeated, and Chōji defeated the other reincarnated ninja remaining in the play. Tobi soon emerged on the battlefield and summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, thus the apparent victory was short-lived. Chōza uses the Super Multi-Size Technique to assault the statue alongside Chōji, but it eventually beats them both and he later takes cover while the statue rampages over the battlefield.
Tobi and the other shinobi there stood in circles when Tobi retreated, as Shikamaru had instructed. This was done until Naruto arrived and distinguished between the actual shinobi and the White Zetsu Army imposters. When Naruto’s shadow clone arrived, he thanked him and informed him that HQ has already told them everything.
While protecting the barrier, Chōza continued his talk with Dan, informing him that Madara Uchiha has also been reincarnated and that Tsunade, in the capacity of the Hokage, and the other Kage were facing him on the battlefield, which shocked Dan. Although Chōza praised Tsunade as a Hokage, Dan told Chōza that only Hashirama could ever defeat Madara and implored him to go out and find the caster of the Impure World Reincarnation technique and stop them instead of guarding the barrier — seeing this as the only way to stop Madara, leaving Chōza to wonder if Madara was truly invincible.
Later, Chōza looked in disbelief as Dan was surrounded in a type of light before beginning to deconstruct when the Impure World Reincarnation was released. As Dan regained control of his motions, he requested to remove the barrier to which Chōza consented. When Dan used the Spirit Transformation Technique to seize control of his ascending spirit, Chōza realized his intentions and implored him to hurry and visit Tsunade as his time was running out. He joyfully revealed the mechanisms underlying Dan’s technique to an amazed Konoha-nin after Dan left.
Chōza was later seen attending the funeral post the aftermath of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Chōza was a part of the crowd of people who gathered outside the Seventh Hokage’s office a day after Konoha's Parent and Child Day. Since he was unable to see his granddaughter, Chōchō, during the holiday, he requested a “Grandparent and Grandchild Day” so that he can spend time with her. He was joined by Hiashi Hyūga, who also wanted to spend time with his own grandchildren. Later, the Hokage ultimately approved their request.
Chōza is a polite and caring man who appears to have great wisdom and awareness of the world, and he deeply loves his son, Chōji. He is not beyond reprimanding his son for his conduct, especially when they endanger others. This was evident during the Fourth Shinobi World War, when he told Chōji that he should take what was going on around him seriously, and that as the future head of the Akimichi, he should not behave so cowardly. Like the rest of his clan, he has a large appetite and is prone to eating everything on any menu’s page.
Chōza is a tall, plump man with brown hair who appears to be wearing a long, spiky red hair-piece. He has purple markings on his cheeks, which is a frequent feature among the Akimichi clan. He dresses in a samurai-style attire consisting of a black coat with armor bearing the character meaning “meal”. He also has a rope belt, hand guards, and a hachimaki strapped around his head instead of a forehead protector. He also wore a set of silver hooped earrings at some point before passing them down to his kid. He has not been seen wearing them since they were returned to him when Chōji became a chūnin and swore his pledge.
At any time Chōza employs the Multi-Size Technique, two markings appear under his eyes; these markings disappear when he reverts to his normal size.
Chōza, like his son and the rest of his clan, employs a unique technique that allows him to convert calories into chakra. As the clan’s head, it stands to reason that he is well-versed in all of his clan’s hidden procedures. He was able to help Kakashi Hatake defeat the Deva Path, as well as knock out the Asura Path with a single hit after it had been paralyzed by Kakashi’s Lightning Release: Shadow Clone Technique.
He wields a bō in battle with remarkable proficiency, like other members of his clan, with the ability to lengthen it in proportion to him as he increases in stature. He could use the hammer to generate a giant whirlwind powerful enough to send hundreds of enemies flying, as well as Chōza himself, when using his Multi-Size Technique. While floating, his shadow covers practically the whole battlefield, supporting Shikaku Nara’s skills.
Chōza possesses incredible physical strength, as evidenced by his ability to stop Kinkaku’s massive tail, as well as stop the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path with his bō. Chōza is also very durable and resistant to pain, shielding his comrades from Asuma’s explosive attacks.
As the leader of his clan, he is likely to be well-versed in most, if not all, of his clan’s skills. He has demonstrated competence with the Multi-Size Technique, being able to stay in this shape for a considerable period of time without any obvious strain on him or his chakra supplies, as well as the Human Bullet Tank, which he used alongside his son during their battle with Pain. All of this revolves around the clan’s unique capacity to enlarge certain body parts.

(To Chōji) “Chōji, you’ve got a kinder heart than anyone I know. There will be someone who will see that in you, and become your friend. If you meet him, treat him as your best friend, and become comrades who will trust in each other more than anything else.”
