Darui in Naruto

Not much of Darui’s background is known except that he was a student of the Third Raikage and the right-hand man of the Fourth Raikage alongside C. He was present when the Fourth Raikage was enraged after Konohagakure and Sunagakure invited other villages to an unplanned combined Chūnin Exams, mistaking it for an underhanded plot to attack Kumogakure. While A ordered his troops categorically to reject Tsunade’s offer, Darui informed A that he had already notified Killer B of this. A instantly told Darui and C to keep B from attending the examinations but he was already on his way.

Five Kage Summit

Darui and C were chosen to accompany the Fourth Raikage to the Land of Iron’s Kage Summit. He and C had to rush to the Raikage’s defense shortly after they arrived and the meeting began, following the Raikage’s outburst and subsequent destruction of the table he was seated at, standing between the Raikage and the other Kage’s bodyguards, who had interpreted this as an aggressive action towards their respective leaders.

When they were told to stand down, the two men returned to their stations and things calmed down, only to return to the Raikage’s side when White Zetsu appeared later in the meeting. Darui and C accompanied the Raikage to search for Sasuke Uchiha, when White Zetsu disclosed his location. He apologized strongly for both the wall and the table when the Raikage broke it down to leave.

When they found Sasuke and his crew, Suigetsu charged towards C as soon as the battle began. Darui, on the other hand, deflected his strike and the two warriors exchanged blows with their swords. He eventually triumphed, imbuing his sword with lightning-natured chakra and pinned Suigetsu against a wall. He then attended to C, who had been knocked out by Sasuke’s genjutsu, and they both watched the Raikage as he became increasingly agitated and reckless throughout his struggle with Sasuke.

When the Sunagakure delegation arrived to help, Darui joined forces with them as C healed the Raikage and bombarded Sasuke with a deadly attack. After Sasuke escaped their onslaught and the pillars collapsed; the Fifth Kazekage’s sand shielded Darui from the falling rubble. Darui and C returned to the Summit Hall after Sasuke’s escape, where Tobi explained his Eye of the Moon Plan to them.

As part of his explanation, he revealed that B just pretended to be captured, prompting Darui to declare that this discovery came as no surprise to him. Darui then accompanied the Raikage in his pursuit for B after the formation of the Allied Shinobi Forces. They were pulled to the location of his struggle with Kisame Hoshigaki. The team arrived just in time for Darui to break the Supervibrato Lightning Release Swords with a lightning-infused shuriken, preventing Kisame from cutting off B’s legs.

They all returned to Kumogakure once the so-called “Kisame'' was eliminated. Despite Darui’s wish to rest, Mabui demanded a thorough explanation of what had occurred since they had gone. Darui later attended the war council meeting convened by the Raikage.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Darui was placed in charge of the First Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces during the Fourth Shinobi World War. He and his troop joined the rest in mobilizing, but soon separated and headed for the shore of the Land of Lightning to protect against an approaching portion of the Akatsuki forces.

Darui unleashed the first attack before the opposing army made landfall, electrocuting scores of White Zetsu Army clones as they marched through the sea towards land using his Lightning Release: Black Panther skill. He confronted the revived Gold and Silver Brothers, apologizing for having to beat them and further damage their reputations.

As the conflict progressed, he was joined by Samui and Atsui, who revealed their preferred weapons: the Treasured Tools of the Sage of the Six Paths. Several White Zetsu clones tried to ambush them throughout the battle, but they were quickly dispatched by Atsui’s strike. Darui attempted to stop Atsui before rushing out to confront Kinkaku and Ginkaku, and watched as both Atsui and Samui were hit with the Kōkinjō and had their “word souls” cut, only to be horrified as Atsui was pulled into the Benihisago and Samui was taken captive.

Darui cut Kinkaku’s arm and used his Storm Release: Laser Circus attack, hitting both Kinkaku and Ginkaku, who were surprised to discover that the missiles from the attack were guided. This assault ended with Samui being absorbed into the Benihisago and Darui being hit with Kōkinjō and having his word soul severed with the Shichiseiken.

Darui understood he could escape being caught in the Benihisago by not saying his most-said word: “dull”, after gaining a clear understanding of how the tools operate by observing what happened to Atsui and Samui. He mistakenly said the phrase, though, when he scolded the brothers and stated, “I’m the Boss’ right arm, I am not imitation!”

As he was being sucked in, he began apologizing to everyone, saying “sorry” three times, becoming his most-said word and thus stopping the suction. He launched a quick attack with his sword after his escape which knocked Ginkaku into the Kōkinjō and seizing both the Shichiseiken and the Benihisago. After considering his changed most-said word, he realized that he was naturally apologetic and declared that he would accept that.

He then launched a new strategy, distracting Kinkaku by flinging his sword at him, followed by his Laser Circus technique which buffeted Kinkaku, and allowed him to sever Ginkaku’s word soul with the Shichiseiken.

Ginkaku then pleaded with his brother to help him by saying his favorite word, “Kinkaku” and was locked inside the Benihisago. Darui observed Kinkaku transform into his six-tailed, Version 2 form and rage on the battlefield as he began to suffer from the Treasured Tools’ huge chakra drain. To stop Kinkaku, headquarters dispatched Darui the Kohaku no jōhei and Team 10 to assist him. Ino used her Mind Body Switch Technique to take control of Kinkaku’s body while Shikamaru and Chōji distracted him.

Darui then summoned Kinkaku, and Ino coerced him into responding, triggering the Kohaku no Jōhei and sucking Kinkaku in. As Kinkaku was sealed, he asked how he and his sibling could have been vanquished by “copper” pieces, to which Darui replied that a group of copper coins can be worth as much as a gold coin. He had no means to use the Benihisago when the Kōkinjō and Kinkaku were sealed, but he clung to it in the hope of finding a method to release Samui and Atsui.

Meanwhile, he assisted in the capture of the resurrected Kakuzu, and by nightfall, Kakuzu and the rest of Akatsuki’s men had been defeated. Tobi, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, emerged on the battlefield before they could declare victory. Tobi confronted Darui and attempted to steal the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei while the statue was wrecking devastation. He and Shikamaru attempted to stop Tobi’s plans, only to be attacked by the statue. They are saved by Chōji and Kitsuchi, respectively, but Tobi escaped with the tools. As night began to fall, they began to retreat.

Darui and the other shinobi were ordered to stand apart in circles until Naruto arrived on the battlefield and weeded out the imposter shinobi who had assumed the guise of their colleagues throughout the night and were inflicting havoc and confusion on the allied shinobi. He subsequently expressed his surprise that the Raikage had decided to allow the jinchūriki out of prison after hearing Naruto was on his way to the battlefield.

Later, Darui announced the arrival of his division on the jinchūriki battlefield. With this, he and the other members of the Allied Shinobi Forces took their place in front of their foes. He and C, along with many other Kumo-nin, launch an assault based on Shikaku’s tactics.

Darui and many other Storm Release users employed the Storm Release: Laser Circus technique to aim for the beast’s eye while C and others blinded the opponent with the Lightning Release : Lightning Illusion Flash of Lightning Pillar technique. Darui, aided by Sakura, attempted to use a Storm Release assault on Obito Uchiha, but was promptly rebuffed by the now fully-matured Ten-Tails, who had fled the hole in which it appeared to be held.

He, later on, warned the other shinobi who wanted to fight alongside the Hokage not to act hastily. He was backed up by Hashirama Senju, who warned them not to be careless. Darui would later come to the aid of the other shinobi fighting Tobi. When tremors were felt around the battlefield, he warned everyone to brace for the meteorite’s impact.

He and the rest later fell victim to the Infinite Tsukuyomi, only to be later freed after Naruto and Sasuke released the genjutsu. Later, after the war ended, Tenten presented the Treasured Tool Benihisago to Darui after releasing a captured Atsui and Samui from the scroll she sealed it in.

New Era

Years after the conclusion of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Darui succeeded the Fourth Raikage to become the Fifth.

Darui is an easygoing and mellow individual, as evidenced by his response to the Fourth Raikage’s extravagant exit through a window, telling C that he will merely use the door as normal people do. His personality is also visible in his lethargic and languid way of speaking, frequently referring to objects or situations as “dull” — a pun on his name.

Despite his laid-back demeanor, he isn’t lazy which is shown by his quick reactions when he came to the Raikage’s defense after the other Kage’s bodyguards reacted to the Raikage smashing the desk he was sitting at.

Darui is an extremely apologetic person who will even apologize for other people’s actions — a trait he admitted he hasn’t noticed in himself; this trait causes him to say “sorry” as much as the word “dull”. He is also devoted to the Fourth Raikage, whom he refers to as “boss”. He also considers himself as the Fourth’s “second right hand”, and as a result, he will back the Fourth vocally as well as physically. Darui was also given command of the First Division as a result of the Fourth’s trust. He is also very understanding.

Darui is a tall, dark-skinned man with a somewhat bulbous nose, black eyes that look bored most of the time, and shaggy, white hair that covers his left eye. He’s dressed in a high-collared, sleeveless uniform with loose fitting slacks, wrist bandages and a Kumogakure shinobi’s one-strap-over-one-shoulder flak jacket.

He additionally had stylised water and lightning characters tattooed on his right and left shoulders, representing his chakra’s nature affinities, Water Release and Lightning Release, as well as the fact that he has a Kekkei Genkai, the Storm Release. His left arm tattoo also indicated that he inherited the Third Raikage’s black lightning. When he is out of the village, he wears a broad, folding, cleaver-like blade strapped to his back.

Darui grew substantially taller and stronger following the Fourth Shinobi World war and after becoming the Raikage. He also developed a little mustache and creases at the corners of his mouth, similar to his predecessor. While his clothing remained basically unchanged, he began wearing a hood instead of the high-collar he had previously worn.

Darui is a highly skilled and capable shinobi, having been picked as one of the Fourth Raikage’s bodyguards and right-hand man, as well as being appointed as the leader of the Allied Shinobi Forces’ First Division during the Fourth Shinobi World War. He single handed vanquished the Gold and Silver Brothers, who possessed the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths. His skill level rose dramatically throughout the years.

Chakra and Physical Prowess

Darui has demonstrated incredible speed, coordinating a joint assault on Taka alongside the lightning-enhanced Fourth Raikage while also protecting C from a sneak attack by Suigetsu. By the time he became Raikage, Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki compared his taijutsu skills to those of Naruto and Sasuke.

He also has significant chakra reserves and stamina, as he did not pass out from exhaustion after using Three of the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths and still had enough chakra to battle efficiently.

Ninjutsu

Darui is proficient in wind, water and lightning transformations. He can catch an opponent in a water wall and channel lightning through it to electrocute them. He may also use Lightning Release to boost the power of his weapons, allowing them to pierce through a metal blade. He can use Storm Release by combining his water and lightning natures which allows him to discharge beams of light that he may freely guide like missiles.

Darui can wield black lightning, a specific type of lightning passed down solely to him by his teacher, the Third Raikage, which enhanced the power of his lightning skills. He can use black lightning to immobilize or kill several enemies using techniques such as the Lightning Release: Black Panther. He can even boost the technique’s potency and efficacy by developing a shadow clone.

Darui often holds a broad and somewhat long blade that, unlike other swords, folds in two to be stowed and unfolds while in use. He possesses extraordinary kenjutsu abilities, having clashed with Suigetsu’s Kubikiribōchō and defeated him by pinning him to a wall with his lightning-imbued blade. He could also literally disarm Ginkaku and Kinkaku during their battle, knocking Ginkaku into Kinkaku’s Kōkinjō while snatching the Shichiseiken and Benihisago.
