Obito Uchiha awakened the Sharingan after he desired to protect Kakashi Hatake, his teammate from an enemy ambush. The enemies were invisible and the Sharingan helped him see through it. However, shortly after unlocking the Sharingan, Obito would get crushed by rocks and would be helplessly left there. As a final request, he asked Kakashi to take one of his eyes and use it as his own.

Although he was presumed dead, he was saved by Madara Uchiha and using the Hashirama cells, he would save the life of the young Uchiha. Obito stays there and recovers. One night, under the instruction of White Zetsu, Obito goes to check in on his friends who were on the battlefield and would witness his friend, Rin Nohara being killed. This would cause him to unlock the Kamui and Kakashi also unlocks this ability at the same time.

Obito then takes the guise of Madara Uchiha and does a lot of atrocities with his Kamui, including causing the death of his own teacher, Minato Namikaze. Kakashi Hatake, on the other hand, would serve the Hidden Leaf for many years. He uses his Kamui during the Pain assault to save many lives and unlike Obito, Kakashi could not use the Kamui as frequently due to his limited Chakra.

Kamui is then used by Madara Uchiha and Black Zetsu in the Fourth Great War. Madara uses the Kamui after stealing it right out of Kakashi, leaving him half blinded for a while. Black Zetsu uses it after taking control of Obito Uchiha’s body.

Kamui is a Mangekyou Sharingan. Apart from the Rinne-sharingan, the Mangekyou Sharingan is considered the epitome of the Sharingan. It usually requires the sacrifice of a loved one to be activated. Here are some of the other Mangekyou Sharingan:

1. Itachi Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan

Itachi Uchiha had a Mangekyou Sharingan which possessed two abilities – one with the ability to create Black Flames called the Amaterasu and the other which can cast a powerful Genjutsu called Tsukuyomi. He also had access to Susanoo. However, the use of this Mangekyou would eventually leave him blind.

2. Sasuke Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan

After killing Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha gets his own Mangekyou Sharingan. Like his brother, he also possessed the power to use and manipulate Black Flames. He then transplants Itachi Uchiha’s eyes and obtains the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, which would prevent him from getting blindness.

3. Madara Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan.

Madara Uchiha was the first Uchiha to obtain a Mangekyou Sharingan. He unlocked this during the war between Uchiha and Senju, and he would use Susanoo in battle. Due to overuse, he would eventually go blind but his brother, Izuna Uchiha who had also awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan would give him his eyes on his deathbed. This would grant Madara the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan.

4. Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan

Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyou Sharingan was the ultimate Genjutsu. It allowed him to cast a Genjutsu so perfect that it was impossible for the target to determine whether what they were seeing were real or just an illusion.

5. Indra Otsutsuki’s Rinnegan

Not much is known about the powers of this Rinnegan, but Indra Otsutsuki was the first user of the Mangekyou Sharingan.

1. Minato vs Tobi

One of the best stand-offs in the entire series. Minato does not know who the mysterious masked man before him is, but he knows he needs to protect the village at all costs.

2. Kakashi uses Susanoo vs Kaguya

Kakashi finally obtains mastery over the Kamui which he had been blessed with from his best friend. He uses it against Kaguya, protecting the entire Team 7.

3. Kakashi vs Pain

Kakashi fights Pain and gathers as much data as possible. With his Mangekyou Sharingan, he makes sure everyone is safe and uses it to save Choji’s life. This would be one of the main factors of Naruto winning the battle.

Q. What does the Kamui do?

A. The Kamui lets Obito transfer objects, including parts of his body, into another dimension. While the transferred object is in the other dimension, anything that makes contact with the object will pass through it.

Q. Why doesn’t Obito go blind after using Kamui?

A. Obito doesn’t have the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, yet doesn’t go blind after using the Kamui. While there is no official explanation for this, it is assumed that the Hashirama cells in Obito’s body prevent vision loss.

Q. Is Kamui instant?

A. No. Kamui is not instant. However, the speed of teleportation can be increased using both of the eyes simultaneously.
