Shima’s Background

Shima is a toad of Mount Myōboku, she and her spouse Fukasaku are one of the strongest toads and are together known as the “Two Great Sage Toads”.

Battle against Pain

During his battle with Pain, Jiraya summoned Shima and Fukasaku to assist him in entering Sage Mode. They gave him guidance and battled Pain when needed, in addition to sitting on his shoulders to provide him with Nature Energy.

Their efforts were sufficient to combat three of Pain’s bodies. Shima and Fukasaku then used genjutsu to destroy the three bodies but they were quickly overpowered by the appearance of three more. Jiraya ordered Shima to return the Animal Path he had captured to Konoha while he and Fukasaku conducted one final investigation.

Pain’s Assault in Konoha

Shima happily supplies Naruto with meals while he learns senjutsu from Fukasaku (unaware that her choice of food makes him sick). Shima felt something was wrong in the village when refilling her supplies near Konoha. After Pain demolished the village, she summoned Naruto, Fukasaku, Gamaken, Gamabunta, Gamakichi and Gamahiro to Konoha’s centre.

Shima and Fukasaku then assisted Naruto in dealing with the summons of the Animal Path as he faced Pain. They were astounded by his perfect Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, which he had not demonstrated during his training but were once again forced to contend with the Animal Path.

Shima covered the area in a dust cloud as Fukasaku threw Gamabunta at the path, allowing Naruto the opportunity to finish it off. Pain was soon reduced to having only one body, and Shima and Fukasaku attempted to defeat it once again with a genjutsu. Fukasaku was killed by Pain and Shima was knocked out before they had a chance.

Their remains were later discovered and Shima, who had been healed, wept for Fukasaku. When Pain was beaten, he decided to resurrect everyone he had slain, which brought Fukasaku back to life, much to Shima’s surprise. They were later seen together standing on Gamakichi’s head and watched from afar as Konoha welcomed Naruto.

Shima was later seen when Naruto was summoned back to Mount Myōboku ahead of the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Shima’s Personality

Shima is an open-hearted and wise old toad whose visions are clear. She is adored by the toads as the “Mother of the Toad Way” and is greatly respected. She frequently bickers with her husband over little things like missing dinner but loves him deeply and calls him “Pa”. Watching her husband die at the hands of Pain, she was devastated. Shima, like her husband refers to the Great Toad Sage “senile” due to his forgetfulness.

She was very fond of Jiraiya and welcoming to his disciple Naruto. During Naruto’s battle against Pain, Shima called out to Naruto to not give up since both Jiraya and Fukasaku laid down their lives because of their belief in him, and that she wouldn’t forgive him if he gave up.

Shima’s Appearance

Shima has green skin with purple markings around her mouth and the back of her body. The top of her head seems as if she is wearing a hair net with hair-rollers underneath, giving her an “old woman” look. She has been seen wearing two different types of capes, one with a high collar and other a simple one.

Shima’s Abilities

Shima is well known for her thorough analysis of the settings and circumstances of the conflicts she takes part in. She can rapidly determine the optimal plan and will transform into the control centre that will ensure the plan is executed.

She also possesses remarkable sensory abilities, owing to her tongue, which allow her to easily identify and capture her enemy. Her tongue warts can also secrete a highly corrosive mucus.

She has been shown to have a large amount of chakra, as indicated by her ability to enter Sage Mode. Not only that, with a single summoning technique, she was able to call Gamabunta, Gamahiro, Gamaken, Fukasaku, Gamakichi and Naruto Uzumaki.

Nature Transformation

Shima can use Fire and Wind Release but her most significant role with her Fire Release was in a strong collaborative assault with Fukasaku and Jiraiya. Her ninjutsu talents are so great that she even blends her wind-based chakra with senjutsu chakra for more lethal attacks.

Genjutsu

She and her husband can perform the Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chat, a feat made possible only by the husband and wife’s harmony formed through decades of marriage.

Senjutsu

Her most powerful weapon is her skill in senjutsu. She uses this to boost the force and range of her assaults as well as to push her body to its limits, such as expanding her tongue to more than ten metres in length.
