Tailed Beasts are powerful creatures that are the embodiment of Chakra. As it is dangerous to let them wander around, they are sealed inside people called the Jinchuriki. Naruto Uzumaki, the protagonist of the show, is the Jinchuriki of the Nine Tails.
Disclaimer: Before you go through this page, please remember that it will contain spoilers for Naruto and Naruto Shippuden.
In the beginning, there was a Divine Tree which was planted by Kaguya Otsutsuki, an alien who had come to harvest the Chakra Fruit, which granted the people who consumed it Chakra. However, the downside of this was that it required human sacrifices.
Kaguya fell in love with a human and had twins with them, Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki. They realised their mother’s evil ways and confronted her. She had planned to kill them as well to obtain their chakra anyway, so she fused with the Divine Tree to obtain the power of the Ten Tails.
She was defeated by both of them and seales inside a giant body which would become the moon. However, the Ten Tails that remained was split into 9 different beings by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. These 9 beasts are the different tailed beasts, namely Shukaku, Matatabi, Isobu, Son Goku, Kokuo, Saiken, Chomei, Gyuki and Kurama.
After splitting the 10 tails into 9 different entities, the Sage of Six Paths gave them each a name. They were allowed to roam free and were to help humanity out. Each of them had a varied power level with strongest being the Nine-Tails. Here is the list of tailed beasts in ascending order in terms of their tails:
The one tailed beast. Shukaku was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. However, it was captured and used as a tool in war, and had a total of 3 Jinchuriki with the last one being the Kazekage Gaara.
The two tailed beast. Matatabi was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. However, it was captured and used as a tool in war, being sealed inside Yugito Nii, a shinobi from the land of thunder.
The three tailed beast. Isobu was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. However, it was captured and used as a tool in war, sealed inside Rin Nohara as a plan to attack the Leaf Village. However, Rin foils this plan by committing suicide and saves the Hidden Leaf. The beast was then revived and sealed inside the Mizukage, who would gain full control over it.
The four tailed beast. Son Goku was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. However, it left the temple after a while and lived with a few monkeys. After a while, Hashirama Senju captured Son Goku and sold it to Iwagakure at the Five Kage Summit in order to ensure peace between villages.
The five tailed beast. Kokuo was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. After a while, Hashirama Senju captured Kokuo and sold it to Iwagakure at the Five Kage Summit in order to ensure peace between villages.
The six tailed beast. Saiken was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. After a while, Hashirama Senju captured Saiken and sold it to Kirigakure at the Five Kage Summit in order to ensure peace between villages
The seven tailed beast. Chomei was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Out of the nine tailed beasts, Chomei was the only one who did not belong to the Five Great Shinobi Countries, as it was affiliated with Takigakure.
The eight tailed beast. Gyuki was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. However, it was captured and used as a tool in war, sold to the Kumogakure at the Five Kage Summit by Hashirama Senju. Its last Jinchuriki was Killer B, who had perfect control over it.
The nine tailed beast. Kurama was assigned to guard a temple by Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Over time, it was known as one of the most fearsome creatures who brought about only destruction. Madara Uchiha controlled Kurama in order to attack the leaf. However, Hashirama Senju put a stop to this and sealed Kurama inside an Uzumaki clan member, as they had large Chakra reserves. This tradition continued for years.
A. All tailed beasts are incredibly strong and are the manifestation of Chakra itself. While each of them is stronger than the average person, among them, the Nine Tails is the strongest and the one tail is the weakest.
A. No. After Shukaku was extracted from him, Gaara does not get Shukaku back. The sand manipulation ability that he had was actually a Kekkei Genkai that he inherited from his parents.
A. Matatabi, the two tailed beast is based on a Wild Cat. It is blue in colour and resembles a cat made out of Chakra.
