Tsurugi in Naruto

Very little is known about his childhood and the information regarding Tsurugi’s past and his heritage is still shrouded in mystery. Other than the fact that he was the head of Hidde Mist’s hunter ninja unit, not much is known about his past.

In the Six-Tails Unleashed Arc, Tsurugi along with his unit tracked Utakata down who was accompanied by Hotaru at the moment. He was hunting Utakata down to assassinate him as a punishment for killing his master, Harusame, and fleeing the Hidden Mist Village.

Fortunately, they were saved by Team 7 and with this new development, Tsurugi negotiated with Yamato, captain of Team 7, and Utakata. He agreed that he will free Hotaru and leave them alone until Team 7 is finished with their mission.

After that, he had a private conversation with Utakata and urged him to go back to the village. Utakata refuses to accept what his previous master did to him, and Tsurugi argues that his teacher had simply attempted to release him from the Six-Tails Chakra Beast, despite Utakata's continued resistance. Tsurugi and his squad leave after their discussion and promise to observe them.

Utakata sets off to look for Tsurugi when he questions whether or not the man is telling the truth. When Tsurugi sees that Utakata is hunting for him, he tries to find him, but he and his unit are slain when they came in contact with the Giant Multi-Headed Dog of the Animal Pathof Pain.

After the ninja bandits are defeated, Utakata sets out to find Tsurugi again. Before Pain could approach him, he came upon Tsurugi's blood-stained mask and realized what had happened to him.

Because of his lack of appearances in the series and related information, almost nothing is known about Tsurugi’s personality. Based on the little information that is present, it can be deduced that he was cool and collected, as seen by the quick decision he made to meet with Utakata and Yamato in private. He even made an effort—albeit ineffectively—to persuade Utakata to go back to Hidden Mist Village.

He had a scar above his left eye and long, black hair, and a beard. He was a hunter ninja, thus he wore the typical Hidden Mist Village ninja attire, which featured a dark blue flak jacket, the traditional black shinobi sandals, a Hidden Mist Headband, and a mask to conceal his identity.

Despite being a highly skilled shinobi, very little is known about the skills and powers that Tsurugi possessed. He only had a few appearances throughout the series, therefore he never displayed any of his skills or tactics.

Despite this, Tsurugi was probably one of Hidden Mist's greatest shinobi as he was the leader of the hunter-ninja. He was seen using the WaterRelease technique and the Hiding in Rain Technique, which he used to create rain around himself, although his full potential was not revealed.

Tsurugi was a competent spy who, in keeping with his Anbu position, was capable of startling even a knowledgeable member of Hidden Leaf's Anbu with his sudden presence. Tsurugi, like the other members of his group, has a tanto on his back, a sign that he practices the sword art known as Kenjutsu. All this indicates that he was a true master of his craft.
