In the entire Naruto universe, one could argue there may not be an individual who impacted the course of history more than Madara Uchiha. Despite living decades before the main storyline of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden takes place, he still manages to have considerable presence within the narrative. That is whether it was indirectly, through others, or through himself personally due to the use of forbidden techniques that granted him life. Please note that this piece will contain a lot of spoilers for the Naruto series as a whole.
Madara Uchiha, a legendary leader of the Uchiha clan and one of the original founders of the Hidden Leaf Village alongside his dear friend, and the eventually the first Hokage, Hashirama Senju, he fought to bring an end to the chaotic Warring States period that plagued the shinobi world. However, his idea of peace was one of control of subjugation and that clashed with Hashirama’s ideas. But after a climactic final battle that was so destructive it created what is now known as the Valley of the End, he was promptly vanquished.
This would be far from the end of his involvement in the events of the world however, as thanks to the use of forbidden techniques, he manages to undo his own death. This allowed him to slip into the shadows and lay the groundwork for his final gambit for eternal peace, the “Eye of the Moon” plan.
Knowing that his time in the mortal world grows short due to his old age, he rescues the seemingly doomed Obito Uchiha from his awful fate and manipulates him to put his master plan into action, even convincing him to take his name upon his death. However, not even natural death could stop Madara in his tracks as he sowed the seeds for his eventual resurrection once again…

Born as the oldest of five children during the chaotic Warring States period, that predates the formation of the villages, where fighting was constant and relentless, Madara Uchiha was an incredibly gifted and skilled warrior. A natural consequence of the era he grew up in, as even children were to be used as soldiers on the battlefield in the constant clash of clans vying for territory, The two greatest clans were widely considered to be the Uchiha and the Senju, which would lead to a vicious blood feud between the two due to their constant encounters on the battlefield and the never ending cycle of revenge.
On his rare moments of time off, Madara would encounter a young boy around his own age whose name was Hashirama. The two would become both friends and rivals, constantly seeking to one up each other in everything. While they agreed not to divulge their family names, they both eventually came to the realisation they were from rival clans. Forced between his budding friendship and duty to his clan, Madara breaks off cordial contact with Hashirama so he has no qualms of potentially meeting and killing him on the battlefield. This resolve is what initially triggers the release of his Sharingan.
Yet even with his newfound powers, Madara could never manage to best Hashirama on the field of battle. Similarly, Hashirama could not bring himself to end the life of who he considered to be his dear friend. After years of clashes, both of them found themselves as the heads of their respective clans, which Hashirama tried to use as leverage for peace. Madara refused, due to his grief and desire for revenge for the death of the last of his living brothers Izuna.
Upon taking his fallen brothers eyes and unlocking the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara once again wages war against the Senju, only to be defeated once again. After Hashirama offers to kill himself if it would mean the end of fighting, Madara relents and agrees to a peace treaty.
In cooperation with the Senju and other nearby affiliated clans, the Hidden Leaf village was founded. An era where constant strife and death did not have to be the norm seemed to be at hand. However, it didn’t take long for things to fall apart.as Hashirama and Madara had irreconcilable differences in terms of their ideas of peace.
Hashirama believed in cooperation with their neightbors, while Madara believed in control and subjugation to maintain order. Jealousy also flared when Hashirama was named the first Hokage. It was only a matter of time before Madara decided that the Hidden Leaf was a doomed experiment, and would abandon the village, returning with the Nine Tails under his control in order to challenge Hashirama once again.
After a climactic final battle that tears the land asunder, Hashirama finally slays Madara in order to protect the Hidden Leaf. Unknown to him however, Madara had set in place a contingency, sacrificing one of his own eyes to perform the forbidden jutsu Izanagi, which rewrites causality and undoes his own death.
After taking a chunk of Hashirama’s flesh during his final duel, the mixture of Senju and Uchiha DNA awakens Madara to the Rinnegan. In hiding, Madara can advance his plans for peace in secret. He knows his time left in the world is limited, so he both implants his newly gained Rinnegan into a young child named Nagato, without his knowing, and manipulatives events to convince a formerly near death Obito Uchiha to take up the cause in his name.
Not only that, he also guides the ignorant Nagato towards his destiny. Much, much later in the series, when the Edo Tensei is enacted, Madara returns to the realm of the living once again, now personally able to realize the endgame of the “Eye of the Moon” plan….
Madara possesses an absolutely ridiculous arsenal of abilities between his innate natural talent, the ability of the Sharingan to copy any non-Kekkei Genkai jutsu, Rinnegan and ability to enter Sage Mode and use Senjutsu despite zero prior training, This doesn’t even begin to get into his physical abilities, as he is quite possibly the single most skilled Taijutsu specialist to ever live and also has an incredible level of mastery of all major forms of weaponry.
Of course, this is with the caveat that in his original life, he never quite had all of these abilities and traits all at once. It was only made possible by the countless experimentation by Kabuto Yakushi in order to engineer a body “Beyond Madara’s physical peak” as well as include Hashirama Senju’s cells. Madara was already a virtually perfect shinobi, paired with Kabuto engineering combinating all of his peak traits into a single body made him into the superpower he became.
Madara was capable of single-handedly fighting off almost the entirety of the shinobi world’s forces at once. Even the five Kages fighting simultaneously were completely overwhelmed by the might of his perfectly engineered body. But even this wasn’t the very peak of his power, as he would soon become the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, becoming functionally immortal, and capable of using the mystic Truth Seeking Balls. That was capable of nullifying all chakra it comes into contact with and is able to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi that is the cornerstone of his “Eye of the Moon” plan.
Madara Uchiha has an outrageous amount of abilities. By nature of being an Uchiha alone and being a Sharingan user is only the tip of the iceberg. The modifications granted by Kabuto as well as having become capable of using the Rinnegan, as well as becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki granted him seemingly infinite power. Without the interference of Zetsu, he may very well have been victorious….
As one of the most legendary Shinobi to ever exist, Madara Uchiha's confrontations where at a epic scale. From fighting the entire Shinobi Alliance during the Fourth Shinobi World War to fighting the First Hokage Hashirama Senju. Here are some of his most iconic fights:

A. Madara prolonged his life by siphoning chakra from the Gedo Statue. Madara survived his final encounter against Hashirama by using the Forbidden Jutsu, Izanagi, and rewriting reality itself. In his battle against Hashirama, Madara acquired some of his flesh and implanted it in his body, which caused the awakening of his Rinnegan. Madara used his newly acquired Dojutsu to summon Gedo Statue which helped him prolong his life.

A. Madara Uchiha, also known as the Ghost of the Uchiha, was the second individual in the shinobi history to awaken Rinnegan. He gave his Rinnegan to Nagato Uzumaki as a child to be used in the future to bring him back using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu. When Madara is fully revived, he then acquired his Rinnegan from Black Zetsu and Obito Uchiha, who were in the possession of each eye at that moment.
