Background

Obito was born as a member of the legendary Uchiha clan of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Obito lived with his grandmother in his early years but other than that, information regarding his parents and immediate family are still shrouded in mystery.

He never had the privilege to know his parents and only had his grandmother, who was his only family. Obito’s childhood was a lot like Naruto Uzumaki, the protagonist of the series. He liked Rin Nohara who in turn liked Kakashi Hatake, which caused the rivalry between Obito and Kakashi. From a very young age, Obito dreamed of becoming strong enough to be acknowledged by the village and one day become the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf.

Obito had a rough start in his journey to be the strongest shinobi. He managed to graduate from the Hidden Leaf Ninja Academy and became a member of a genin squad. This genin squad consisted of Obito, Kakashi, and Rin, captained by Minato Namikaze.

In the anime, the newly formed genin squad had to go through the bell test. Obito was unable to acquire the bell on his own but later succeed in retrieving one by joining forces with Rin and Kakashi and learning the importance of teamwork. As time passed by, he went on numerous missions with the squad but always found himself outclassed compared to Kakashi.

At some point, Team Minato participated in the Chunin Exams where Obito was defeated by Might Guy in the third round. Later, Kakashi defeated Might Guy and was promoted to chunin and received Rin’s admiration. To gain Rin’s praise and attention, Obito trained rigorously and eventually got promoted to chunin himself, but his excitement soon ended when Kakashi got promoted to jonin.

Following Kakashi’s promotion, Team Minato set out on a mission to destroy the Kanabi Bridge. This would in turn hinder the Hidden Stone Village from using Hidden Grass Village as a relief point and their base during the Third Great Ninja War.

Minato and Rin brought gifts for Kakashi to congratulate him on his promotion but Obito claimed that he had forgotten to bring him a gift. As Kakashi was a jonin now, Minato placed him in charge of the team for this mission.

Later, Minato took his leave and left the squad under Kakashi’s leadership as he was called to the front lines. Sometime after Minato’s departure, the squad was confronted by Hidden Stone shinobi who captured Rin and fled.

Kakashi instructed Obito to leave Rin behind as completing the mission was more important than concerning themselves with Rin’s well-being. Obito was furious at the thought of abandoning Rin and insisted they concentrate on her rescue. Obito walked out by himself after Kakashi refused, stating that a shinobi who abandons his comrades is worse than scum.

Obito managed to locate the Hidden Stone shinobi’s hideout but was caught off guard by an enemy, Taiseki, who had camouflaged himself. To his surprise, he was saved by Kakashi who was moved by his words and changed his mind. Unfortunately. Kakashi lost his left eye trying to defend Obito.

Obito was desperate to help Kakashi and awakened his Sharingan and killed Taiseki with his newly acquired visual prowess. They managed to free Rin from her restraints but now had to get out of the collapsing cave caused by the enemy.

Kakashi was hit in his blind spot and was about to get crushed by a boulder when Obito pushed him out of the way and sacrificed himself. The right side of Obito’s body was crushed and he accepted his fate. He gave his left Sharingan to Kakashi as a gift for his promotion so that he could protect Rin in his absence.

Obito supposedly died in this incident for the outer world but was saved by Madara Uchiha. Madara implanted his body with White Zetsu matter and Hashirama’s cells as he nursed him back to health. Madara then tried to recruit Obito but he refused and stated that he needs to get back to the village and fight alongside his squad.

Later, White Zetsu informed him that Kakashi and Rin were in danger as they were getting chased by Hidden Mist’s Anbu unit after Kakashi rescued Rin from their grasp. Obito set out to save his friends but was too late. He arrived at the battlefield at the sight of Rin stabbed through her chest with Kakashi’s Chidori.

This caused great trauma to the young shinobi and he awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan in the process and eliminated every last Hidden Mist shinobi. However, he left Kakashi alive as he knew Rin sacrificed her life by jumping in the way of Kakashi’s Chidori.

Obito had now lost faith in the cruel world they lived in, where a pure soul like Rin had to die at the hands of her friend. He aligned himself with Madara and dedicated his life to executing the Eye of the Moon plan, the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and creating a dream world where no one has to go through what he and his comrades did at such a tender age.

He trained under Madara for the following months and assumed Madara’s identity following Madara’s demise. At some point, Obito infiltrated the Hidden Leaf Village and extracted the Nine-Tailed Fox from Kushina Uzumaki, following the birth of Naruto. He took Kurama under his control and unleashed him on the Hidden Leaf.

Minato, the Fourth Hokage, defeated Obito and saved the village. Minato then sealed half of Kurama’s chakra in Naruto and half in himself. Minato and Kushina died as a consequence of this incident. After a few years, Obito joined forces with Itachi Uchiha and massacred the Uchiha clan along with him, which became known as the Uchiha Clan Massacre, or the Downfall of Uchiha. Following this, he recruited Itachi as a new member of the infamous Akatsuki.

As Madara, Obito manipulated the Mizukage to do his bidding. He even approached NagatoUzumaki, to use his RInnegan for his plan. When Yahiko denied his offer to join forces, he pulled the strings from the sidelines, which eventually led to the unfortunate demise of Yahiko.

Following Yahiko’s demise, Nagato and Konan joined forces with Obito which led to the formation of the new Akatsuki, consisting of S-ranking rouge shinobi from different lands. Obito then assumed the identity of Tobi, an eccentric and loud mouth rookie to hide his true identity.

At the Five Kage Summit, Obito declared war on the world, the Fourth Great Ninja War, after the Five Kage declined to peacefully hand over Naruto Uzumaki and Killer B, the jinchuriki of the Nine-Tailed and Eight-Tailed Beast respectively. In the war, Obito revived the Ten-Tails and eventually became its Jinchuriki.

As he became the jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, Obito gained an Otsutsuki-like appearance and prowess so great that they were comparable to Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. With his newfound prowess, Obito battled against the Allied Shinobi Forces. Although he was all-powerful, he was defeated by Naruto Uzumaki when he extracted the Tailed-Beasts sealed within Obito.

Obito was defeated mentally as well as physically. He reverted back to his former sane self after Naruto shared his perspective and dream with him and tried to revive all the shinobi who had died in the war with the Rinne-Rebirth Jutsu. Noble his intentions may be, he was interrupted by Madara. Madara used Black Zetsu to seize control of Obito’s body and forced him to fully revive Madara with the forbidden jutsu.

Obito somehow overpowered Black Zetsu’s will and retrieved some of the Eight-Tails’s chakra, and gave it to Naruto, who was on the verge of death. After Black Zetsu betrayed Madara and revived Kaguya Otsutsuki, the Mother of All Chakra, Obito fought Kaguya alongside Team 7.

In Kaguya’s dimension, Obito saved Kakashi’s life by using Kamui to teleport Kaguya’s All-Killing Ash Bones and sacrificed his life to save Kakashi, Naruto, and Sasuke Uchiha. After his death, he departed and gave his chakra plus his visual prowess to Kakashi for a short while.

This gave Kakashi enough strength and power to protect his students and the shinobi world. After everything was over, Obito was finally able to rest in peace and was reunited with the love of his life, Rin, in the afterworld.

Obito was cheerful and filled with dreams but turned sadistic after he faced the hardships thrown in his direction by the cruel world they lived in. He might have used a ruthless approach, but in his mind, he did whatever he did to build a bright future for others. It may not seem like it but he sacrificed his dreams, and himself for a better future for others. He was introduced in the series as an antagonist but in the end, he died the death befitting of a hero and saved the shinobi world.

Personality

Although Obito is a beloved character and admired by many, he is a very controversial character. He played the role of an antagonist in the series but as it turned out for most of the antagonists in Naruto, he too did what he did for the greater good. Since he was a kid, Obito had a kind heart and always wished for others. In the anime, he was often late mostly because he would stop to help any elderly he came across.

He was always attracted to Rin and considered Kakashi as his rival. He aspired to the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf eventually to create a peaceful world for everyone he cherished and loved. He was also a little clumsy and wanted to become strong and be recognized by others, the second reason why he wanted to become the Hokage.

Obito admired Sakumo Hatake and considered him a hero. He gave the ideal that was eventually passed on to Naruto Uzumaki, the protagonist of the series. He stated that the shinobi who break a rule are scum but one who abandons their friends is worse than scum, something Kakashi resonated with and taught his students.

After Rin’s unfortunate demise, Obito’s ideals changed and his perspective of the world changed. He abandoned all things that tied him to the cruel world he lived in. He fell victim to the Curse of the Uchiha and lost all sense of self. He became calm, focused, and ruthless. He abandoned all emotional attachments be it to the Hidden Leaf, his clan, or his friends.

He didn’t even care about his name as he stated he is no one on multiple occasions. He dedicated his life to activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi and creating a dream world where no one ever had to go through the pain they had to go through. He killed countless and committed unfathomable crimes to make his dream a reality.

Many fans of the series believe that Obito became evil and killed countless just because Rin died but nothing can be farther from the truth. According to popular belief, he wanted to create a dream world because he was tired of the cruel world they lived in. He wanted to put an end to the cruel and miserable cycle of life which forced Rin, someone who was pure by heart, to sacrifice herself and die at the hands of Kakashi, someone she loved.

Obito never abandoned his dreams completely as he still considered himself to be like a Hokage. The Hokage does whatever is best for the village, whereas Obito was doing whatever was in the best interest of the world. He was sacrificing himself to create a better world for others, in his own twisted way.

Obito saw his young self in Naruto and tried to break his beliefs by demonstrating how naive they were. But no matter what he did, he was unable to overpower Naruto’s will and he eventually gave in and understood the flaws in his approach to creating a better world. In the end, he joined forces with him and fought against Kaguya Otsutsuki.

He eventually sacrificed his life and died in order to save his comrade, Kakashi from certain death. Although it is arguable, Obito always had the best interest of others at heart and dedicated his life to creating a better world for them. Obito fits the perfect description for the quote “ You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Nonetheless, how he lived his life, it is certain that he died the death of a hero.

Appearance

Throughout the course of the series, Obito dressed in various outfits and went by various identities. He was born with short, spiky black hair and black eyes. He was dressed in a blue outfit with long sleeves and a blue jacket with orange trimmings. The Uchiha clan crest could be seen on the back of the jacket, which featured two buttons on the neck to secure it to the rest of the ensemble.

He additionally had a white belt, shinobi sandals, the common dark blue forehead protection from Hidden Leaf, and a set of orange-lens goggles attached to ear protectors. After the events at the Hidden Grass Village, the right side of his face was severely damaged, almost like wrinkles. His right arm and shattered right half of his torso have been replaced with White Zetsu matter, which is significantly paler in color than his body. During his recuperation, his hair extended; over the years, he would frequently grow it out and cut it.

Over the years, Obito wore a variety of masks to conceal his identity when he interacted with others. He wore a mask with a black flame during the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack on the Hidden Leaf Village and for several years after. By the time Naruto Shippuden begins, he sports an orange mask with a Tobi-like spiral pattern concentrated around his right eye.

He begins wearing a white mask with a purple tint that covers the entire top half of his head when Konan destroys this mask. The shape of the mask is a cross between the Sharingan and the Rinnegan, with three tomoe arranged in a circle in its center, two of which serve as eyeholes. He asserts that this new mask was made to be extremely robust because it was made with combat in mind but was destroyed by Naruto in the war, revealing his true identity.

He had on a straightforward purple-lined kimono, bandages all over his body, and plain sandals while pretending to be the Fourth Mizukage. He wore a black cloak with a purple lining, which he used to invade the Hidden Leaf with the Nine-Tailed Fox. He grew out his hair to resemble Madara's during the Uchiha Massacre and wore customary blue Uchiha robes.

Obito makes his debut as Tobi is dressed in a black long-sleeved shirt that covered his neck and chin, a pair of black gloves, some dark-colored slacks, a long green scarf, regular sandals, and white straps. He has identical metal plates on his upper arms and a thick black belt around his waist that resembles armor. On his fingers and toes, Obito wore blue nail paint.

He temporarily wore an Akatsuki cloak with a hood after Deidara tragically died. He changes into a pair of black pants, gloves, and a tight-fitting white shirt during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Over this, he dons a purple, high-collared, long-sleeved mantle with the Uchiha crest on the back that divides along the lower part.

He wears a belt and a straightforward, light-purple obi around his waist. Madara's gunbai, which is now purple with black trimmings and a black tomoe and is fastened to his back by a black chain that runs up his right sleeve.

Obito's hair turns completely white once he is transformed into the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki and gained an Otsutsuki-like appearance. His skin turns white, ten protrusions—five near his shoulders, five near his hips—appear from his back, and ten magatama markings—one huge one with a black Rinnegan-like pattern within it, and nine smaller ones grouped in rows of three below it—appear on his back in a black array.

In addition, the scars are replaced by a scale-like pattern that covers the entire right half of his body. Obito underwent another change after he was able to control the Ten-Tails. The scale aspect of his body became less noticeable, and the 10 protrusions on his back grew to create a haori's collar and coattails. In addition, six magatama insignia appeared over his chest, and two horns—the left being smaller than the right—grew from his forehead.

After the Ten-Tails is extracted from his body, he returns to his former look, though his hair remains to be white.

Obito Uchiha’s Abilities

Obito may have started as a bit of a class clown but he grew up to be a formidable shinobi in history of the series and a force to be reckoned with. Being an Uchiha, he always possessed an affinity for fire release. In his prime, he was able to manipulate various chakra releases which are listed below:

  1. Fire Release
  2. Wind Release
  3. Lightning Release
  4. Earth Release
  5. Water Release
  6. Wood Release
  7. Yin Release
  8. Yang Release
  9. Yin–Yang Release

Obito was a member of the legendary Uchiha Clan and possessed great physical prowess and a strong chakra. After he trained under Madara’s tutelage, his physical prowess and battle tactics exponentially increased and he became one of the strongest shinobi alive.

His body was modified and implanted with Hashirama’s cells which boosted his chakra reserves and now gained regeneration abilities. He was capable of healing wounds without weaving any hand signs. Under Madara’s care, Obito mastered various jutsus, varying from destructive ninjutsu to powerful barrier ninjutsu to immobilize enemies.

Obito also possessed two of the Three Great Dojutsu, the Sharingan and the Rinnegan. As a member of the Uchiha clan, Obito was able to awaken his Sharingan which gave him great visual prowess. After he witnessed the demise of Rin, he awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan. His Mangekyo Sharingan possessed a unique ability, known as Kamui.

Obito adopts Kamui as his go-to combat method to the point where he rarely uses more conventional ninjutsu techniques. In battle, he exploits his intangibility both defensively and offensively, allowing enemies to strike him without harm while teleporting them to his dimension while they are dazed and confused so that they can no longer threaten him.

It is impossible to detect the chakra fingerprints of individuals he sends to the Kamui realm from outside it. After Nagato passed away, Obito retrieved the Rinnegan and inserted it in his left eye socket. He only utilized one eye, which took a toll on his body.

Nevertheless, he was capable of performing all Six Paths Techniques with the Rinnegan, despite the fact that he was having a hard time controlling the visual prowess of a single Rinnegan. He could summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, use chakra chains to restrain targets, and use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to bring the dead back to life in exchange for his life.

He also came up with his own variation on the Six Paths of Pain, which consisted of the six jinchuriki who had been reincarnated and had had their respective tail beasts sealed back inside of them.

After Obito became the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, he gained immense prowess in addition to an Otsutsuki-like appearance, similar to the Sage of the Six Paths. With his newfound prowess, he was able to perform any jutsu without weaving any hand signs. He created the Ten-Tails God Tree and was also capable of activating the Infinite Tsukuyomi but was stopped before he could do so. He also gained ten black orbs, known as Truth-Seeking Balls.

These Truth-Seeking Balls consisted of the five elemental chakra natures along with Yin-Yang Release. These orbs could be used for both, offense and defense. Obito is the only character who can pass the orbs through the holes in his hands to enlarge the size of his Truth-Seeking Ball. Obito was able to produce a single Truth-Seeking Ball after absorbing some of Madara's prowess after the Ten-Tails Beast was extracted from his body.

Obito Uchiha’s Quotes

  1. To Kakashi "Those who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash, either way, I'd rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!"
  2. To Kakashi "I'm about to… die… but I'll become your eye… and see the future with you."
  3. "The moment people come to know love, they run the risk of carrying hate."
  4. To Naruto and Killer B " I'm no one… I don't want to be anyone. All I care about is completing the Eye of the Moon Plan. This world is completely worthless… there is nothing left in it but misery."
  5. To Kakashi "Look! There is nothing in my heart! I don't even feel the pain!! You don't have to feel guilty, Kakashi. This wind hole was opened by this hell of a world."
  6. To Madara "Now I finally realized that faking one's name and letting others do everything for you is different than entrusting something to one's comrades. I'm not you. The current me is the one who wanted to become Hokage: Obito Uchiha!"
  7. Last words, to Naruto "You'll probably have to suffer again from now on… but don't change, keep going your way. You told me that you never change your words… that's your ninja way. Right? Naruto, become Hokage… at all costs.
