Hiruzen Sarutobi was born into the Sarutobi clan and joined the Hidden Leaf during its formation. His father, Sasuke Sarutobi was a well known ninja as well and after moving to the village, Hiruzen became friends with Danzo.

Hiruzen was a very gifted prodigy as he showed excellence in Ninjutsu at such a young age and was trained by both Hashirama and Tobirama Senju. However, his incredible growth caused Danzo to be jealous of Hiruzen which set off a one-sided rivalry based on jealousy.

A while later, right before the Second Hokage’s final battle, he appointed Hiruzen as the Third Hokage. This caused Danzo’s jealousy to burn even fiercer and when he became Hokage, he was afraid that an empathetic rule would cause shortcomings. Because of this, he let Danzo create Root, an organisation which was cruel to say the least. It conducted many atrocities in the name of protecting Konoha and Hiruzen turned a blind eye to it for the most part.

Hiruzen married Biwako Sarutobi, a medical ninja and had a child, Asuma Sarutobi. He also had a team that consisted of Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru. He taught them many Jutsu and trained them to be shinobi in the best way possible. They were so strong that they were known throughout the nations as the three legendary Sannin. Jiraiya also received training from Fukasaku, a toad who taught Jiraiya how to use Senjutsu.

Hiruzen had thought of Orochimaru as his successor, but he failed to capture the Will of Fire. He could not put the village before himself, which resulted in him asking Jiraiya to take the position. He said that he was not nearly responsible enough to take on the role and thus because of this, the role was given to Minato Namikaze, Jiraiya’s student.

The Hiruzen that was shown in the anime was very fragile and weak. However, during his prime, Hiruzen was known as the God of Shinobi. His prodigal skills were to such an extent that he surpassed the second Hokage, a Senju, at a very young age. Hiruzen was also known as ‘The Professor’ due to him mastering such a large variety of skills. Due to this, he is assumed to have at least a thousand abilities.

In the anime, Hiruzen was said to have an immense Chakra reserve which he lost during his old age. However, due to his incredible chakra control, he required much less chakra than usual to cast his ninjutsu.

Although Hiruzen’s physical prowess was not the best during his old age, he was still able to fend off the first two Hokage along with Orochimaru all by himself. Although his speed and strength had been greatly reduced, his reflexes and reaction time had not deteriorated at all.

Hiruzen, being known as both the God of Shinobi and The Professor, has a lot of special abilities that he can use. However, due to him not getting much screen time, there is not much display of all these skills. Here are some of the notable ones:

1. Nature Transformation: Hiruzen can use all types of nature transformation at will. He not only learnt them, but also got equally good at all of them by mastering all of them. He was one of the few people who could do this.
2. Sealing Jutsu: Hiruzen knew every single sealing Jutsu that was available in Konoha. He is seen using the sealing Jutsu which was a specialty of the Uzumaki clan, which was outside Konoha and isn’t even known by Naruto Uzumaki.
3. Weapon Techniques: Hiruzen is very proficient in weapon usage. He is seen using Shurikens a lot. One of his signature moves that he provided to his students is the Shadow Shuriken Jutsu, which multiplied the Shuriken thrown. Even his Summon, the Monkey King, turns into a weapon which he uses.

One of the few times that we see Hiruzen fighting. Although he is extremely old, he is still seen holding off on his own against the three of them and manages to extract Orochimaru’s arms.

Although it doesn’t have much screen time, it is one of the greatest accomplishments a shinobi can have. To have mastered all five to such an extent is nothing short of incredible.

Although it seemed like Naruto got caught up in the tree, Hiruzen comes to the rescue and saves Naruto.

A. Although Hiruzen seemed to be one of the weakest Hokage in the series, that is only because the viewers saw him at his weakest point. Hiruzen is supposed to have surpassed both the first and second Hokage at a young age.

A. Although he has mastery over all five elements, he can not combine them. Wood style is created by combining Earth with Water. To do this, you need Kekkei Genkai, which can only be inherited. Hiruzen does not have this, so he can not use Wood Style.
