Indra Otsutsuki, son of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, was the founder of the Uchiha Clan.
Indra Otsutsuki was the first born of the Sage of the Six Paths. Indra inherited his father’s Dojutsu (visual prowess), chakra, and mental energy, and later became the founder of the clan known as the Uchiha Clan. His younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki, inherited his father’s physical power and life force.

Indra is also known as the creator of Ninjutsu and as a protege, he was believed to be the successor of his father. However, after his younger brother, Ashura Otsutuski, was named as the successor to their father’s legacy, Indra drifted away from his family. The conflict between the two brothers eventually led to the establishment of the Senju Clan and the Uchiha Clan, two of the most powerful and fearsome clans in the series.

Indra Otsutsuki was the first born son of the Sage of Six Paths. Due to some complications during the birth of his younger brother, Ashura Otsutsuki, the brothers lost their mother. Despite the loss of his mother at a considerably young age, Indra had a very happy childhood, as he spent most of his time with his brother or reading his father’s books and journals as a part of his day-to-day activities.
He inherited Sage’s mental strength and his chakra alongside his dojutsu skills, and thus Indra would naturally excel at everything he tried. Not only that, the two brothers studied Ninshu under their father’s wing in hopes of one day becoming the successor to their father’s legacy.
As Indra kept learning under his father's tutelage, he realized that with the use of certain hand signs and use of chakra, one can alter the output and perform versatile feats according to his/her chakra nature and developed Ninjutsu. Soon after, Ninshu followers of the Sage of Six Paths began adapting Indra’s techniques and used them for their own as well as others’ benefits. Although Indra was proud of his achievement and the others’ development, he showed signs of concern as Ninshu followers were now focusing on physical growth rather than spiritual growth and connecting with others, which was the basic purpose of Ninshu.
In the anime, Indra awakened his Sharingan when he lost his pet dog who died in an attempt to protect Ashura from a wild beast attack. It was all orchestrated by Black Zetsu, who used to secretly approach Indra whenever he was alone, goading him with praises. Due to his own capabilities as well as the influence of Black Zetsu, Indra began solely focusing on his own strength and training as he started believing that one should only rely on his own strength. He worked alone, becoming cold towards his younger brother and others.
Soon the time came when Hagaromo decided to choose his successor and tasked his sons with the revival and aid of foreign land which was struggling to survive. Both were sent to a land where the residents were struggling to survive due to illness and lack of water. Indra noticed that the land in itself was fertile, but the existence of the God Tree sapling was causing their demise. Without relying on anyone else, Indra decided to use his visual prowess to influence people to destroy the sapling, and returned home. Upon his arrival, he found out that Ashura had not yet returned. Indra was not happy with his father’s decision to wait for Ashura and to make the decision after his arrival.
After a long wait, eventually, Ashura returned but he was accompanied by the people whom he was sent to help. Hagaromo chose Ashura as his successor and elaborated that Indra only focuses on power and was incapable of listening to others. As a result, the village Indra was set out to save had destroyed itself as people started fighting over water which created chaos and led to the demise of the village. Indra was enraged and filled with jealousy of his father’s decision.
Bitter with his family due to his father’s decision, Indra decided to challenge his father but realized he was not strong enough. In order to gain more power, Indra killed his two closest friends and acquired Mangekyo Sharingan. With his newfound power, Indra set out to destroy his brother who was, to Indra’s surprise, able to counter his move with the strength he inherited from his father. In order to crush his younger brother, Indra unleashed his Susano and overwhelmed Ashura. Fearing Ashura might lose, Hagoromo gathered around Ashura’s followers and asked them to share their strength with Ashura. After getting help from the followers, Ashura was able to manifest his true strength and defeated Indra with a combination of Wood Release and Six PathsSenjutsu. Facing defeat at his younger brother’s hands, Indra still refused to acknowledge him and the battle between them continued throughout their lifespan. Even after both brothers ended their natural lifespan, they reincarnated throughout history and fought each other.
Indra inherited a great proportion of his father’s powerful chakra, mental strength, and visual prowess. Indra was shown to be highly skilled in Taijutsu in the anime to such an extent that no other follower of Ninshu posed as a good opponent for him in the least. Indra also possessed extraordinary sensory capabilities as he was able to sense Black Zetsu, who was an expert in moving undetected, on multiple occasions.
Indra showcased great potential in Ninshu. He discovered that with right chakra manipulation, chakra can be used to release different chakra nature and could be used advantageously. Being unable to exert his chakra like his father, Indra invented hand signs to manipulate chakra efficiently. In the manga, Indra is capable of performing Yin Release. In the anime, Indra can be seen using Fire and Lightning Release. Indra is also shown to have expertise in ShurikenJutsu and Kenjutsu.
Indra inherited Sharingan from his father, which he awakened after saving his brother from a wild beast while losing his dog in the process. Sharingan allowed him to predict his opponent’s movements by observing the flow of the chakra.
After killing two of his followers who were also believed to be his friends, Indra had awoken his Mangekyo Sharingan and now was capable of using Susano.
After awakening his Mangekyo Sharingan, Indra now possessed the power of Susano. Indra also gained an ability in his left eye, later known as Hinokagutsuchi, which is unique to him. It enables Indra to produce and control an ever-burning black flame at the focal point of his left eye. This technique resembles Amaterasu.
