After being cut on February 5th by the Oakland Raiders, cornerback David Amerson has signed a 1-year, $6 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Amerson was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 2013, where he spent only two seasons before being waived after being on the teams' roster for two games in 2015. He was claimed by the Raiders where he spent three seasons. After having a great performance in 2015, he signed a 4-year, $35 million deal. But his journey was cut short in 2017, as he started (and played) only six games before suffering a foot injury which sidelined him for the rest of the season.
The Chiefs continue to bolster their secondary after trading quarterback Alex Smith and a 3rd round pick for Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller. In his 2nd season, he was graded at 90.0 by Pro Football Focus and was a solid player in the slot for Washington. Secondary has been an issue for the Chiefs and for cornerback Marcus Peters, who has played alongside multiple cornerbacks who have performed poorly. It's likely that Amerson fills the spot for cornerback Darelle Revis, who played only six games for the team. While Amerson is 26-year-old, Revis was 32 and he was clearly showing signs of slowing down during his second stint with the New York Jets. If Amerson performs well in the offseason, the Chiefs could possibly have a great secondary (as long as the players stay healthy). The addition of Amerson helps strengthen the secondary, but the Chiefs should continue to pursue the cornerback (and possibly safety) position by drafting or signing. The 2018 off-season will have a good group of free-agent cornerbacks.
