Denver Broncos head coach rumors: Sean Payton asking for Bill Belichick money

Welcome to the Sean Payton sweepstakes; it's that time of the season when half the league's teams are searching for the legendary coach's signature, and we hear some unbelievable tales.

Today's agenda will look at rumors that are making the rounds. The latest one witnesses Sean Payton asking for Bill Belichick's money if he is to come back and coach in the NFL.

It has been speculated that Sean Payton has told the Denver Broncos what they need to do to secure his signature, and needless to say, it's costly. The Advocate's Jeff Duncan reports that Sean Payton is seeking $20-$25 million per season in contract negotiations.

That figure is in the pay range of the most successful coach in NFL history, Bill Belichick. Belichick has acted as both the head coach and general manager of the New England Patriots. That is also true even though Peyton has five fewer Super Bowl rings than Belichick.

However, if Payton can take the Denver Broncos' job and turn their fortunes around, he would be a good value for money. The Broncos are currently the league's laughing stock, as they endured a disappointing season and don't even have a high draft pick to salvage.

That's because Broncos traded a king's ransom for Russell Wilson, which didn't go as expected. Payton would face the challenge of restoring Wilson's confidence, improving the offense, and reducing the dysfunction in the organization.

How much did Sean Payton earn with the Saints?

In 2016 Sean Payton signed a five-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints. That contract saw the Super Bowl-winning head coach increase his salary to a staggering $9 million per year, which amounted to just over $45 million.

The contract was one of the highest in the league at that time, and it was only proper that the Saints tied their legendary head coach to a befitting contract.

How did the Denver Broncos perform this season?

The Denver Broncos had a horrible 2022 regular season, with the side receiving all sorts of flack for the duration of the season. The Broncos closed out the season with a hard-to-decipher 5-12 record. That is despite them coming into this season as one of the favorites to make a Super Bowl run.

It only seemed right, as this was a side that many thought was just one piece away from contention. The piece? That piece was meant to be Russell Wilson, a potential first-ballot NFL Hall of Famer and general league good guy.

However, the reverse was the case, with Russell Wilson doing nothing but cooking losses for the Broncos. Bad form, injuries, and mutiny all season have plagued the team. Their pathetic performances ended up costing Nathaniel Hackett his job, which is why they are chasing Sean Payton.

Payton has quite the job on his hands if he chooses to accept their contract offer. It would be a tricky deal to pull off, as the Broncos don't have a first-round draft pick to make a trade with the Saints for Payton's services.
