At the age of 85, former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Dick Haley passed away. After a long battle with dementia and Parkinson's disease, his son, the former head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Todd Haley, announced his father's passing on Friday. Haley participated in six NFL seasons, four of which he spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1961 to 1964.

In 1971, he was hired as the Steelers' director of player personnel. Haley stayed on in the role until 1990. He played a pivotal role in selecting players who helped the franchise win four Super Bowls in the 1970s.

In a statement, current Steelers president Art Rooney II commented on Haley's passing and his role in helping the franchise dominate the 1970s in the NFL.

The statement said:

“We lost an amazing football mind and a better man with the passing of Dick Haley. He was a valuable part of this franchise for 23 years, the first 4 of those as a player and the final 19 as a member of the Player Personnel Department."
“Dick played an instrumental role in our unprecedented success in the 1970s during the second part of his career. He developed a unique eye for talent, and he ultimately helped identify and draft many of the players that allowed us to win four Super Bowls during that decade.”

Dick Haley was a star running back at the University of Pittsburgh for three seasons (1956-1958). However, Haley played on the defensive side in his six seasons in the NFL. With the Steelers, Haley had 13 interceptions and a fumble recovery in 49 games with the franchise.

After leaving the Steelers' front office, Haley joined the New York Jets as their director of player personnel in 1991. He later became the Jets' general manager ahead of the 2001 season. Haley left the franchise after the conclusion of the 2002 season, spending 12 seasons with the team.
