Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield responded to the controversy that ensued after Monday's NFL game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Mayfield and the Browns suffered a 31-3 loss to the high-flying 49ers in San Francisco, where the Cleveland QB was front and centre.

There was handshake drama after 49ers cornerback claimed Mayfield snubbed him prior to the clash – video later showed that the latter did shake Sherman's hand before the coin toss.

Sherman apologised via the "The Pat McAfee Show" on Wednesday, saying, "It's definitely my bad".

He explained that he "took it as disrespect because the way he was standing back" when the captains came together to shake hands, but said he will reach out to him to apologise.

Mayfield responded to Sherman's apology as he said: "It's nice of him."

He added that he was happy video evidence came out because "that's the one time the camera, and something recording me, has gone in my favour."

"I respect him, who he is as a player," Mayfield added. "He's a great player, has been for awhile."

Another piece of controversy that came out of Monday's game was with San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa, who mocked Mayfield with a flag planting celebration.

Bosa, who played for Ohio State in college, said after the game that his antics were in reference to when Mayfield was the quarterback for the Sooners and planted a flag at midfield in a game against the Buckeyes.

"I don't think Sherman's was a personal vendetta," Mayfield said. "He said what he said. But Bosa, good for him. He had that premeditated. He's been thinking about that obviously for two years now, so, that's a long time to be think about that loss."

Mayfield finished the game completing just eight of 22 passes for 100 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
