NFL fans call for Bill Belichick’s head after announcing he will be returning again in 2023

Bill Belichick missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons after losing in Week 18. The head coach was on the radar of some fans as a name who could be stepping away from the game permanently. Instead, the coach announced that he expects to return next season.

In response, fans groaned and balked at the announcement on social media. Here's what was said:

Patriots HC and GM Bill Belichick stumbles in post-Brady era

Tom Brady has been gone from New England for three full regular seasons. In that time, he's made the playoffs every year and won a Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick has coached the team to shaky results. In 2020, the team went 7-9 and missed the playoffs with Cam Newton at quarterback.

In 2021, the head coach drafted rookie Mac Jones and kept Newton around. Many expected Newton to play at least some of the 2021 season to allow the rookie quarterback to settle in. Instead, the quarterback didn't survive the preseason as the team decided to throw Jones into the fire from Week 1.

Jones started slowly in his first month, going 1-3. However, just when most had written off the season as a typical lost rookie season, the team hit a new gear. They rocketed to the top of the AFC, obtaining the number one seed for a short moment. They then slipped into a wild card spot. In the team's first playoff game, they were blown out by the division rival Buffalo Bills.

In 2022, some were cautiously optimistic about the quarterback entering his second season. Instead, the team started 1-3 again. Like in 2021, they had a great run midway through the season, hitting 6-4 in Week 11. However, like the previous year, they stumbled down the stretch, going 1-3 in their final games of the year and ending with an 8-9 record.

Looking ahead, many wonder what is next for the team. Will they take another swing at quarterback? Will they find a new offensive coordinator? As it stands, the team is stuck in the middle, lacking top picks but also lacking breakout success. Either way, Belichick has the next several months to put together a new and improved roster.
