Javon Hargrave 49ers contract: How much will ex Philly DT earn at San Francisco?

Super Bowl LVII - Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles
Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.

During the NFC Championship game, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave made his presence known against the San Francisco 49ers.

In that game, he had five tackles along with one tackle for loss as quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson never stood a chance. Apparently the 49ers were impressed with what they saw from Hargarve as they signed him to a four-year deal on Monday.

ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the defensive tackle signed a four-year deal worth $84 million, with $40 million of that contract guaranteed.

Javon Hargrave will now join a 49ers defense that is considered one of the best in the National Football League. He finished the 2022 season with 60 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 11 sacks along with two fumble recoveries.

The San Francisco 49ers apparently feel that the defensive tackle is the missing piece to their battle-tested defense. His ability to get past the center and make quarterbacks uncomfortable is what the San Francisco 49ers are looking for to take their play to the next level.

Adding a former NFC foe, who they have seen do just that, is clearly the first step in making their way to push for another title game appearance as well as keeping their spot on top of the NFC West.

How long did DT Javon Hargrave play with the Eagles?

Javon Hargrave was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft after playing his collegiate career with the South Carolina Gamecocks. He played four seasons with the Steelers before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2020. At the time, he signed a three-year deal worth $90 million.

He then played three years with the Philadelphia Eagles, which included a run to the Super Bowl this past season. Throughout his seven seasons in the National Football League, Javon Hargrave has played in 111 regular season games, starting 96 of those.

He has 361 combined tackles, 197 solo tackles, 40.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries during his tenure.

His departure from the Philadelphia Eagles will now leave a gaping hole in the pass rushing abilities on defense.

Veteran Fletcher Cox is also a free agent and Ndamukong Suh, who also signed mid-season with the Eagles, may look to the NFL Draft to fill the void that those three big-time players have left in their defense.
