On Friday, New York Jets wide receiver coach Miles Austin was suspended by the NFL for violating the league's personnel gambling policy. Per ESPN, the league had been investigating Austin for quite some time and was tracking his online gambling activity. Austin allegedly placed bets from the team's facility.
The Jets' wide receivers coach wasn't present on the sidelines during the team's 19-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football. At the time, neither the team nor the league offered an explanation for his absence; however, his suspension on Friday clarified why he was absent.
Did Miles Austin play in the NFL?
The Dallas Cowboys signed Miles Austin as an undrafted free agent in the 2006 offseason. He featured mainly as a kick returner and had a breakout game against the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs. The highlight of his performance was a 93-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Austin had a breakout season in 2009. He hauled 81 passes for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns, both career-highs. The wide receiver had another 1000-yard season the following year, his second and final in the NFL. He spent three more seasons with the team and was released after a disappointing 2013 season, where he managed only 244 receiving yards. He then spent a season with the Cleveland Browns and another with the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring.
Miles Austin's coaching career
In 2017, Austin was hired by the Cowboys as a scout. He was interviewed for the team's wide receivers coach role in 2018 but did not land the job. He joined the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive quality control coach, and in his only season with the team, they reached the Super Bowl, where they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Austin spent a year on Monmouth's Board of Trustees at his alma mater, Monmouth University, before returning to the NFL as the Jets' wide receivers coach in 2021 as part of former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh's coaching staff.
