History of Gomu Gomu no Mi

The World Government had been trying for over 800 years to try and get the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika but they were never successful. According to the Five Elders, this was because the Will of the fruit doesn't let it be captured. At one point, the Government changed the name of the fruit to Gomu Gomu no Mi and changed it to a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit so that its true nature stays hidden.

It is said that the Government once got its hands on the fruit. It was then put on a Government ship of a CP9 member known as Who-Who but it was then stolen by Lucky Roux of the Red Hair Pirates. Who-Who's failure to protect the fruit led to his dismissal from CP 9 and he was later imprisoned.

The Red Hair Pirates kept the devil fruit in a small chest which Roux carried around with him. When the Red Hair Pirates were stationed at the Foosha Village, Luffy found the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit and ate it, not knowing that it was a devil fruit. Luffy then gained the powers of the Gomu Gomu no Mi and lost his ability to swim.

Shanks and his crew were shocked when Luffy ate the fruit and it is unclear if Shanks and his crew were aware of the true nature of the fruit.

We see the fruit's awakening during Luffy's fight with Kaido. This was the first time the fruit had awakened in years.

Appearance of Gomu Gomu no Mi

The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a violet, spherical-shaped fruit with a stem on top. It has S-type swirls all over it.

Strengths and weaknesses

After eating this fruit, the user has the properties of rubber and they can stretch, bend, bounce and twist in any way they want. The fruit's power is always active and the body is permanently rubbery. The user is immune to blunt damage or even other severe damages as the attacks just bounce off their skin. They also have enhanced flexibility.

This fruit also makes the user faster and gives them a lot of power. The user is also immune to electricity and they also have resistance to underwater pressure so that they can fight while being in a deep underwater environment. As they can stretch and twist like rubber to extreme ends, they're also immune to injuries. For fighting purposes, the stretching allows the user to increase their fighting range. They can also inhale great amounts of air and exhale it like a huge gust of wind.

Once the fruit is awakened to its Mythical Zoan form, this devil fruit gives the user the properties of rubber in combat and it's up to the user’s imagination to use it. In reality, it is said that it helps strengthen their rubbery body exponentially and grants them more freedom to a God-like level, which makes this devil fruit the most powerful one out there. They undergo a transformation where their hair resembles flames, their eyebrows are spirals and they have ringed pupils with steam wrapped around them.

One major weakness in this devil fruit is that once the limbs are stretched they take time to retract back and this leaves the user vulnerable to attacks. The user is also susceptible to attacks from sharp objects like blades which could critically damage them. The user is also weak against Busoshoku Haki. However, the use of haki only nullifies the user’s ability to absorb blunt attacks, but it doesn't turn the user's body into normal flesh.

Usage

When Luffy was just a child, he had trouble controlling his power as he had trouble aiming and timing his attacks properly. He eventually started to get a hang of his powers by training continuously in the jungle. Luffy uses his devil fruit powers in different ways, like moving from one place to another, attacking the enemy with a lot of punches, etc. He also developed other methods known as gears to level up his technique arsenal. He also uses his rubber abilities for joyful and humorous things like entertaining people.

Techniques

Luffy has a lot of techniques up his sleeve like -

Gomu Gomu no Pistol

This is Luffy's signature attack. In this technique, Luffy stretches his arm back and then throws it ahead, causing a devastating punch. He uses it for both short and long range attacks.

Gomu Gomu no Rocket

In this technique, Luffy stretches out both his arms and grabs an object and then retracts from them causing a projectile motion. With this, he projects himself high up in the air at high speeds and over great distances.

Gomu Gomu no Bazooka

In this technique, Luffy stretches both his arms far back and then throws them ahead, hitting his enemy instantly with a double strike with both hands.

Gomu Gomu no Gatling

In this technique, Luffy uses his stretching ability to bring his fists forward repeatedly in a blurry, rapid barrage of strong punches that creates the illusion of him having multiple arms.

Buso Koka: Gomu Gomu no Gatling

In this technique, Luffy uses his Busoshoku Haki to harden his fists to increase the strength of his attack.

Buso Koka: Gomu Gomu no Bullet

In this technique, Luffy stretches one of his arms behind and coats them with Busoshoku Haki to harden the fist of the stretched hand, and then hits his enemies with a powerful short distance attack.

Over the course of years, Luffy has been able to train and develop his skills which have allowed him to create Gears, which are basically special techniques that are related to his devil fruit. These Gears have become stronger over time and give Luffy vast power.

Gear 2

Luffy pumps blood throughout his legs to activate the mode throughout his body. Later on, he is able to activate Gear 2 on a selected body part. By combining his haki and Gear 2, he is able to punch his opponents with speed and force and this makes his fist turn into flames, which Luffy named Red Hawk. Later on in the series, his Red Hawk became so strong that he could injure even Kaido during their battle in Onigashima.

Gear 3

This mode is activated when Luffy blows massive amounts of air into his thumb and can inflate the bones of a particular body part and make it huge. These body parts are capable of causing damage on a huge scale and can even destroy buildings. His power increases when he combines it with Busoshoku Haki and later on he even combines it with Haoshoku Haki. At first, Luffy used to turn into a child and his fighting abilities were limited temporarily after he used this mode. However, after the time-skip, when he spent two years training, Luffy managed to negate this side effect.

Gear 4

Luffy learned Gear 4 during his 2 year training period and was seen using it during the Dressrosa Arc. Luffy activates this mode by blowing into his arm and inflating his muscles and then coating it with Busoshoku Haki. Gear 4 has three subforms-

Boundman

This form makes his skin composition like that of a rubber ball which causes him to bounce all the time. Luffy is able to retract his hands and legs which helps him unleash devastating attacks and even change the direction of his attacks. His defense also increases and the majority of the attacks bounce off him.

Tankman

This form makes Luffy become much bigger and increases his defense abilities. This also allows him to use his body as a weapon and recoil from his enemies' attacks and blast them away.

Snakeman

This is the last subform of Gear 4 where Luffy turns a bit slimmer and focuses more on the offense. This form doesn't have defense abilities like the previous two forms. Despite that, he has a huge increase in attack speed and can change the direction of his attacks so that he can hurt his enemies from all directions.

However, as strong as Luffy's Gear 4 is, he is usually not able to use haki for ten minutes after this mode, and using it a lot of times can take a huge toll on his body.

Gear 5

Gear 5 is the most recent mode that Luffy activated but this has only occurred in the manga and is yet to be animated. This mode was a result of Luffy awakening his Devil Fruit for the first time since the Blank Era.

In this mode, Luffy has many new abilities like being able to manipulate the shape and size of his body instead of focusing more on hardening his body with Busoshoku Haki. He looks more cartoon-like while fighting. He is able to give his surroundings rubber-like properties, which helped him deflect Kaido's Bolo Breath. He is also able to stretch any object he touches. His power has the characteristics of both Paramecia and Zoan type Devil Fruit.
