Kareem Abdul Jabbar: A Brief Biography

Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a retired American professional basketball player who used to play as a center for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. Often recognized as one of the greatest players of all time. He was selected by the Bucks with the first overall choice in the 1969 NBA Draft and played 20 seasons of which 6 seasons for the Bucks where he led the Bucks to their first NBA championship At the age of 24 in 1971, and rest 14 seasons of his career for the Los Angeles Lakers, during which time they captured five more NBA titles. Early


Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. was born in Harlem, New York. He grew up in Manhattan in New York City. Since his childhood, he was very tall and Slam dunks became a piece of cake to him. In High school, he joined the Power Memorial Academy led by Jack Donohue and won three straight New York City Catholic championships plus, set a 79-2 record. Thus, earned the nickname "The Tower of Power".

During his college career Alcindor played for three NCAA basketball champion teams for three consecutive years (1967, 1968, and 1969), was named the MVP in the NCAA Tournament three times, and was the first-ever Naismith College Player of the Year in 1969. He was also named a three-time unanimous first-team All-American.

The Milwaukee Bucks selected Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the first overall choice in the NBA Draft. Kareem was named NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 28.8 points per game and 14.5 rebounds per game in his debut campaign. In 1971, the Bucks won their one and only NBA Championship, and Kareem received MVP awards for the regular season, the NBA Finals, and his first scoring championship.


Abdul-Jabbar joined the Lakers in 1975 and found immediate success there.
